We picked the car up at Edinburgh airport. No issues. We upgraded to a Volvo XC60. So glad we did. The smartest car I have ever driven. The blindside monitor was wonderful as we were Americans and driving on left side of the road. Car handled beautifully and diesel gas mileage was amazing. We drive around the Highlands for 4 days and only filled up to return the car.
When I arrived at the airport to pick up my car, I discovered that the amount I had paid to AutoEurope on-line was not the full amount required and that there were additional charges. Having chose the cheapest option on-line, I was disappointed to hear that there were additional charges. This is perhaps a sneaky way for AutoEurope to get more business - to appear as if it's the cheapest but then to levy extra charges afterwards.
I had friends visiting from America a needed a few extra seats to get out to the gorgeous Welsh beaches. Rented a Fiat 500l. It was super cute and fun to drive. I was able to return it on Monday at no extra cost which was very convenient.
basically, the quote was $129. the amount I paid was $129 + EUR78 (=$109). Total = $238. In other words the quote was at 50% of the actual price. If I had the full picture, when I booked via kayak, AutoEurope would not have been to cheapest and I would not have gone for them. And that is deceitful.
The response from AutoEurope will be: check our ts and cs. And I did beforehand. I saw the 20% surcharge, tax, or whatever it was. I did not see the minimum EUR50. That required some digging into the document. I can understand that quote is not always what you pay. however, where I draw the line is when the quote is half of what I will pay. Or, the actual amount is double what you quoted me. that is not acceptable. your systems should have rules in place when the quote is that far off and serve up a proper quote.
Hence AutoEurope has deceitful business practices!
Reserved and prepaid a car for 3 days in Bamberg, Germany. Wasn't able to pick it up the first day, and the phone number on the e-receipt was answered by a hair salon. Arrived first thing on day 2, expected the car to be available. It had been rented to another and nothing was available. The customer service rep offered no solution. There was no attempt to call or email us to inquire whether we still wanted the car, even though we had prepaid for the car. This was a very frustrating experience. We rented through AutoEurope because of its affiliation with Avis, but will not patronize this company again.
I used Auto Europe for 5 rentals in Australia and New Zealand. I was very pleased with the personal contact with reps by phone. They were helpful and well informed. I felt that had my best interests at heart, and I think the rates I got were quite competitive. The only downside was an extreme error re: drop off charges when I rented a car one way from Cairns to Brisbane, Australia. I was advised the drop off charges would be approximately $75 when in fact the charges were more than $280. I am in contact with Auto Europe currently and am hopeful of a favorable resolution to this unfortunate situation.
Booking was easy, getting the car was easy and there were no hassles. I was a little surprised that they charged my credit card when I made the reservation, instead of at the time I picked up the car, but that wasn't really a problem.
Good experience all around and would be happy to rent from Auto Europe again!
The rental process with AutoEurope was smooth. Their website was very intuitive and user-friendly. The purchasing process, along with instructions on how to access the vehicle left little room for questions. Overall, it was a good experience. The pricing for the car was the lowest available - and who doesn't enjoy finding a great deal!
The rental was pretty much standard without any outstanding pluses or minuses other than the following: The person who inspected the car before we drove it off the lot noticed damage to the car that was not on the initial form. Had he not noticed this before we drove out, we would likely have been charged for this damage which we clearly did not do. On the minus side, there were several hidden charges that added up to a significant additional amount of money to be paid at the end of the rental. An airport convenience charge of 55 Euros (about $75.00) was added to our bill just because we picked the car up at the airport. In addition, taxes which were not included in our original bill were also added to the charges, coming to a total of about $100.00 extra dollars. I will dispute these charges with the credit card company, but since I have already paid them, I'm not optimistic I'll ever see that money again.
Auto Europe appear cheaper than other rental companies because their quotes don't include full insurance, unlike a lot of other rental companies. They give the impression insurance is included when you are shopping for quotes, the reality is that the insurance they mention is effectively pointless, as it isn't deemed sufficient coverage by the rental companies who supply the cars at the airport. After booking, I got a confusingly worded email from them that talked about insurance, however I concluded their included insurance would be sufficient - it wasn't! You MUST get full rental car insurance, as the car will not be released to you if you don't have it. I ended up having to pay for insurance when I picked the car up, which doubled the cost of the rental.
Good price from Autoeurope, then you get to the airport and they charge additional fees (which aren't too bad), but then you are told that to reduce the excess (no matter who's fault) down from $4,000 you have to pay each day what you paid for the car in the first place! So final price is actually double the rate you pay when you pay through the site.
Service was fast, courteous, at pick up and return. Car had less than 3,000 miles and was clean and quiet. However, was told (Europcar/National) that what I had paid included basically negligible insurance. The extra insurance ($332) cost over twice as much as the car rental fee ($142). I was not happy.
I travel monthly, and I nearly always use Auto Europe for my car rentals. My reservation is always easy, my car is always waiting, and the employees are always polite and professional. I would recommend Auto Europe to anyone.
