Hankø hotel & spa =The entire hotel screams

The entire hotel screams, "We haven't renovated in decades." The interior feels as though it has been put together with furniture bought from flea markets. Garden furniture has been placed in the main lounge alongside worn-out Chesterfield sofas that should have been retired years ago. Nothing about the hotel creates the feeling of a spa or resort—only the impression of a business that stopped investing in its property long ago while continuing to charge premium prices.
Hankø Spa & Resort sells a dream through its marketing. The reality is something entirely different. The photographs on the website and the pricing create expectations of quality, but what we found was a hotel that felt tired, neglected, and vastly overpriced. We left feeling misled, and breakfast would have had to break every world record to rescue even half a point of our rating. That is exactly why I am writing this review.
The hotel gives the impression of a business in serious decline. On a Saturday during peak season, there appeared to be only around 20–30 guests in a hotel with the capacity to accommodate several hundred. In my opinion, the problem does not seem to be a lack of potential customers, but rather a lack of investment and maintenance.
I genuinely felt sorry for the reception staff, who are left trying to defend what years of neglect have turned into a shadow of the luxury spa hotel that is being advertised. They deserve far better than having to represent a product that falls so far short of the expectations created by the hotel's marketing.
I hold formal qualifications in hospitality and tourism with an international specialisation, and I have both worked in and stayed at hotels and resorts across the world in every price category. Unfortunately, I cannot give Hankø Spa & Resort more than half a point, and that is solely because I feel sorry for the staff.
I would genuinely like to see the owners publicly answer the following questions:
A hot tub at just 26°C?
A so-called heated swimming pool at only 20°C?
Promised transportation that never materialised, combined with virtually non-existent customer service?
Having to drag luggage almost one kilometre over gravel, or pay extra for the possibility of being picked up?
Dirty carpets throughout much of the hotel?
What I consider to be misleading marketing?
Garden furniture in the main lounge?
Four staff members expected to operate an entire hotel on a Saturday during peak season?
Premium pricing for a product that delivers so little in return?
The fact that almost everything costs extra once you arrive?
Beds that, in our experience, smelled of urine and appeared to be from the 1980s?
A mattress topper barely one centimetre thick?
Water damage in the bathroom ceiling?
The smell of cigarette smoke lingering throughout large parts of the hotel?
A spa that is largely unmanned and in obvious need of renovation?
A hotel that gives the term "basic standard" an entirely new meaning?
In my opinion, this property has been neglected to such an extent that it is difficult to understand how it can still be marketed as a spa and resort. As a business owner, you have a responsibility to deliver what you charge people for. Here, it feels as though that line was crossed many years ago.
I encourage anyone working in the hospitality industry—anyone with business sense, pride in their work, and respect for customers' money—to take a close look at this place. With relatively modest investment, genuine passion, and, above all, the one thing the current management appears to lack—class—this property could become something truly remarkable.
I would not be surprised if this hotel is put up for sale in the near future. The surroundings are absolutely breathtaking, and the potential is enormous. Transforming this property from what I experienced into a genuine five-star destination would be remarkably straightforward because the location already attracts visitors. What is missing, in my opinion, is competent leadership and investment.
This experience has been genuinely astonishing and has left me with a disturbing impression of just how far a hotel can deteriorate while still being marketed as an exclusive spa and resort. It is difficult to understand how this level of neglect can continue to be sold as a premium hospitality experience.
