Do not buy from this company

Do not buy from this company! Just bought a pair of "Claire 1940s Oxfords" and after wearing just twice the bottom of the sole started to flake off and peal away (see pics). When I first received them I noticed that the soles were very thin which gave them a cheap Made in China look but hoped this wouldn't be an issue in terms of comfort and durability-- boy was I wrong!
So I notified customer service and asked for a refund but was told in a lengthy email that the soles were leather and the orange layer pealing off was sealant and recommended I just sand the rest of it off and they should be ok??? So why provide a sealant at all if its meant to peal off right away? Furthermore, the apparent rough leather soles underneath dont look like a finished product and cant imagine them lasting much longer in any weather condition.
$210 for crap shoes with no possibility of refund. Next step-- Consumer Affairs and Better Business Bureau!

Cheap Chinese Products & Poor Customer Service

Dear Prospective Customers, I am writing to share a profoundly disappointing experience I've had with America Duchess, an experience that has left me compelled to caution potential buyers who value quality and responsive customer service. My journey with America Duchess began with a sense of hopeful anticipation. Influenced by the enthusiastic endorsements of historical fashion figures like Bernadette Banner, andthe brand's unique proposition of period-accurate footwear... However, certain initial observations gave me pause. The absence of a brick and mortar store and the lack of a readily available customer service contact number on the website is problematic. Nevertheless, my desire for authentically styled footwear prompted me to proceed. Having a professional background that includes experience with two luxury shoe brands, I am acutely aware of the complexities involved in achieving a precise fit, especially with uniquely designed footwear. To mitigate potential issues, I proactively sought sizing guidance from your team. The response I received, suggesting I simply "purchase a pair and try them on in your home," was, to put it mildly, unhelpful and indicative of a concerning lack of personalized support for what purports to be a premium product. Despite these early reservations, I placed an order for the 'Lilith' in a size 8W. Upon receiving the shoes approximately a week later, my initial disappointment quickly escalated to profound dismay. It became immediately apparent that the pair I received suffered from significant manufacturing defects, strongly suggesting a deficiency in thier quality control processes. Specifically, one heel displayed a conspicuous factory indentation, while the stitching on the ankle of the other shoe was notably mangled and uneven. Furthermore, the overall gluing exhibited a lack of precision, and a stubborn sticker affixed to the satin toe left behind a persistent, unsightly grey residue that required over an hour of painstaking and delicate removal to avoid further damage. Naturally, I contacted America Duchess without delay to report these issues. Given my location in the greater Manhattan area, and my strong preference to avoid the inconvenience of postal returns, I proposed a pragmatic and mutually beneficial solution: a 20% price reduction to compensate for the significant defects. Regrettably, this reasonable offer was summarily dismissed. The staff insisted on a return for either an exchange or a refund. Now having experienced with thier incompetence, prior to initiating any return, I requested detailed photographic evidence of the *replacement* pair to ensure they would be free of similar flaws. This critical request was inexplicably ignored, despite multiple follow-ups. During a period when I was on vacation, I was instead inundated with what I can only describe as irrelevant and unhelpful responses. My attempts to secure a direct conversation via phone, after considerable effort to locate a contact number, were met with outright refusal to communicate. I was informed that only a return, not an exchange, would be processed – an arbitrary decision given the circumstances. This entire interaction has left me with the distinct impression of a company unwilling to genuinely engage with customer issues or uphold even basic standards of service recovery. My intention in sharing this detailed account is not merely to express personal dissatisfaction, but to serve as a genuine warning to others considering a purchase from America Duchess. My experience paints a clear picture of a brand whose product quality falls dramatically short of its aspirational marketing, and whose customer service is characterized by unresponsiveness, inflexibility, and a seeming indifference to customer satisfaction. For those who value meticulous craftsmanship and reliable support, I strongly advise exercising extreme caution. My investment has resulted in nothing but frustration, wasted time, and the unfortunate realization that what promised to be unique luxury footwear is, in practice, a testament to significant quality control and operational shortcomings. Update In response to the dishonest reply by American Duchess -

I didn’t demand an immediate response, in fact I clearly communicated that I was on vacation, and offered a mutually beneficial solution.

You however didn’t offer multiple solutions and couldn’t be bothered to to answer the simplest question I asked.

I called exactly 1 time and your staff refused to speak to me.

I would also point out that while I did on multiple occasions point out the industrial failure, at no point did I degrade any staff.

We're absolutely at fault for mistakenly sending out a pair of shoes with a minor cosmetic defect. While we strive to check every shoe carefully, we sometimes slip up! In such cases, we're always happy to correct the error.

I understand that you're upset that when you emailed us about the defect, we immediately took responsibility for the error, apologized, offered multiple solutions, and within less than 24 hours provided you with a free pre-paid return shipping label to send the shoes back for a full refund.

I also understand that you're upset that we followed your repepeated instructions to respond immediately by answering each email you sent within mere hours of receipt.

I've reviewed the emails and calls and can only commend our staff for remaining calm, courteous, and professional in the face of a serial barrage of insults and abuse.

Of course, we will happily issue a full refund for the shoes once you've sent them back to us using the free shipping we've provided you.

I hope that wherever you shop next, you'll remember that the staff are human beings, and treat them with basic decency.

Excellent customer service and smooth returns!

I was hesitant at first to order shoes online, since I often have trouble finding the right fit, but I couldn’t resist the beautiful designs from American Duchess, so I decided to take the risk.

I didn’t get the size right the first time, but the return process was incredibly easy. They included a prepaid return label, and all I had to do was fill out a simple form and hand the package to the courier.

As soon as the return was received, I got my refund and was able to order the correct size, which arrived within 24 hours, just in time for my next event! I really appreciate how stress-free the whole experience was.

The Search for authentic historical shoes has been a tiresome search indeed, however I am not one to place the word impossible into my vocabulary. As this word is cringing to the ears when it is spoken, My Lord, My Father, My King can make all things possible!

My Experience With American Duchess

After much time I had thought finally at last I found the company who will indeed be my shoe store for years to come, however quickly I learned this was not the case after the purchase was made. The customer service as many smaller businesses now days was all but caring.

When it comes to packages that become delayed or rerouted, American Duchess expects the customer to take on the stress of figuring out what the trouble is with the delayed package. Why would a business want to cause their customer such distress and time wasted? This time that we are given on this earth by YHVH is precious, and a business should not devalue a customers time spent.

I had to request numerous times for American Duchess to take care of this package matter, and finally they made the choice to.

Unfortunately upon the delivery of the shoes one could tell that these were not going to meet the expectations of $500 spent. The box the shoes were packaged in was all but elegant. It had looked as if they were packaged as a return to the company, and little did they know that they soon would be!

Unlike many videos that I have watched on the website Youtube, this unboxing would be much different…The smell and quality of these shoes were that of Payless from that of the old Payless stores. How could people speak so highly of these costume grade shoes? Truly I believe the majority of people do not withhold knowledge of quality made items any longer.

If I were to tell you the people that American Duchess is the place to purchase high quality historical shoes I would indeed be telling a lie, and that I will not. Please, if you are wise you would continue your search as I am.

Poor Customer Service and Misleading Information

I have been a loyal customer of American Duchess for years, having purchased three pairs of shoes. Unfortunately, this latest experience will be my last.

I recently bought a pair of mules during their Last Chance Sale. Despite normally wearing a size 9, I opted for a 9.5 to ensure a proper fit, as their website claims their shoes run true to size. However, when the shoes arrived, they were so small that an inch of my heel hung off the back. I even double-checked the size on the shoe and the box to make sure there wasn’t a mistake, but both indicated 9.5.

Aware that the sale was final with no returns, I was nonetheless shocked by the incorrect sizing. I emailed their customer service, hoping to exchange the shoes for a larger size since their website showed all sizes still in stock. After several frustrating emails, I was told that the hot summer weather might have caused my feet to swell, leading to the poor fit. Their response was dismissive and inflexible, showing no regard for customer loyalty.

In a previous purchase, I bought another pair of shoes only to find out they were unwearable without an additional buckle purchase, which was not mentioned anywhere on the website. I had to take them to a cobbler to have the leather sized and punched. When I reached out for clarification, I received a rude email implying that I should have known about the need for a buckle. As someone new to historical fashions, I found this response unnecessary and condescending.

I am deeply disappointed with American Duchess's customer service and the misleading information on their website. I will be taking my business elsewhere to a company that values and respects its customers. Anyone want a brand new pair of golden mules that are not size 9.5? I am selling.

It's certainly disappointing when a shoe doesn't fit! We do our best to respond to issues and give fit adjustment advice with thoughtfulness and courtesy, so it's also really disappointing when someone lashes out at us with intentional falsehoods.

All sizes of that shoe except a size 6 were sold out when you contacted us for the first time yesterday - the website did not show "all sizes still in stock." It's a deeply discounted clearance shoe (thus the final sale/no returns) and we've been sold out of most sizes for a few weeks. There were none available for exchange, nor did you request one. 

We take care to make sure customers are fully informed, and we don't hide things in small print. Every latchet shoe that takes an 18th century buckle clearly states that buckles do not come with the shoe. Those notices have always been on each shoe's page, as are links to directions on how to install them yourself. (Of course, you can have a cobbler do it if you prefer!) 18th century shoe buckles are pricey, and many folks prefer to buy one pair and swap them between multiple shoes rather than pay extra for a duplicate they don't need each time they purchase latchet shoes.

You told us that you didn't size up as stated here, but chose your usual size, same as all previous orders. 

The majority of our shoes come with a generous and easy returns policy, and we really recommend choosing one of those if you're uncomfortable with the chance that a final sale item might not be a perfect fit. 

We've sold hundreds of pairs of this exact shoe before we put them on final sale clearance to make way for new styles, and they fit most customers true to size. Unfortunately, no ready to wear item can fit every person, all the time, and we're up front about that. Feet are complex 3D objects, and not every shoe shape will be a good match for a particular foot. Purchasers of any final sale item should take that risk into consideration before making a purchase. 

We hope today's a better day for you. Disappointments suck. Remember to be kind to yourself, and to customer service folks!

My heel cap came off during my second…

My heel cap came off during my second wear. They reached out after I left a review. They said I should always do so, despite a hostile policy with regard to shoes that had already been worn. When I pointed this out, they ceased communication and removed my review.

Edited: We worked it out. They said they had a server problem. They sent me a new set of heel caps and told me how to fix it. Sole glue. I've increased my review because of the company. I can't give a perfect score because that was a hassle and $300 shoes should not need fixing after being worn for less than 3 hours but I do appreciate them putting in effort. They replaced something else that broke (also used twice) without question. For what it's worth, the first time I wore them and everything went well I was totally in love.

I ordered the Vienna Victorian Congress…

I ordered the Vienna Victorian Congress Boots, and I am in love. I get all sorts of compliments for them. It fit like a glove, so definitely order your exact size.

I wish I remembered her name, but before I bought them a very nice woman talked to me about the shoes, and was immensely helpful in ordering. If you have any hesitations or questions, I'd recommend talking to their customer support. Immensely helpful and wonderful people!
