Attended the Haloween nights event on…

Attended the Haloween nights event on the 26th of October which was overcrowded, queues everywhere, overpriced stalls selling food and could not get anywhere near the chip shop due to a queue which trailed as far down as the canal barges. The entertainment inside the houses was really poor and nothing was offered to the children who became bored very easily. The only half decent attraction was the mines however after the front people in the group were jumped out at, it kind of ruined the effect for the other people at the back. We won't be returning.

Not as good as it used to be

Not as good as it used to be. Expensive for a family. Less informative as fewer staff about to demonstrate and explain. Long queues for the mine - why not provide timed tickets on entry?
At 2.20, we could not find anything to eat for lunch. Pub only had 2 rolls - there were 4 of us! Institute Cafe had no food left (having run out of sandwiches and jacket potatoes), cafe above pub stopped serving at 2.20. This left only fish and chips which had a very long queue. Not ideal when you have two hungry little ones! If you go, take your own food!

Overrun with school children, far too many visitors!

We’ve visited the Black Country museum before and enjoyed the visit, however we didn’t enjoy our visit today. We visited with our son and daughter-in-law, paying over £100 and it was spoilt by hundreds and hundreds of school children! Every house, every shop were full of children, the museum should definitely have a limit on numbers. Very disappointed.

The museum is lovely to look round. We went a relatively quiet day so lots of space and time to wonder around. The only spoiler was Hobbs and son fish and chips. It took an hour and half to get food!! Poor service and no proper apology and rude once we actually got food

Not the attraction it used to be

What should be and in the past has been an interesting, educational and enjoyable day out turned into a wast of money on this occasion. Overrun by dozens of schoolgroups who were given total priority by the BCLM staff leading them - pushing ahead of other paying visitors. Many shops not open & the rest full of children with more queing outside. The high street area had more than 6 groups of 20-30 children in and out of the shops all the time we were in the area. Few guides to explain the history of the few other open properties. Plus food expensive and service slow. Final insult to add to the £80 paid for 3 of us to visit was having to pay £3.50 to get our car back.

Suggest if you want to visit, and it could be a very worthwhile visit, then check and make sure there are no school parties visiting that day as they are clearly given prioirty. Not the place it used to be.

Absolutely shocking value for money

Absolutely shocking value for money. Also misleading advertising with NO mine opening on evening and hiding behind “H&S” rubbish when it solely comes down to cost !
We will NOT be attending again.
Back in the day this was a fantastic Xmas evening event which was always sold out before November ! Being able to get tickets still available on the Night of visit ( Fri 22nd Dec 2023 ) speaks volumes. The Fish & Chips was always a good experience, however charging £3.75 for just a cone size of chips now is just “thieving”…

Deserves to be closed down and the way it’s going that’s what will happen and it will serve them right for robbing the General public !

What a lost opportunity - very disappointing

What a lost opportunity! On the day of our visit (3rd November 2023) most of the buildings were unoccupied (nail making, rolling etc) and with no staff or signage - we learnt nothing!
We did see one piece of 'hot metal' when a demonstration was given of making a chain link by a totally disinterested young man! The demo was signed to start at 3.30pm and by 3.35 it was all over! No explanation of how many links a man would make in a day, earnings etc etc.
That was the only hot forge working available to see.
We had a good tour of the 'mine' by Mick (thank you Mick!) who made it very interesting and we could ask him questions after. Clearly an enthusiastic guide.
But generally a few staff dressed in period costume but in the wrong period 'zones' . They didn't engage with visitors and generally looked disinterested.
The senior management of this venture need to get a grip! Get signs (numbered to relate the the hand out map) made with an explanation of each building, what it was used for etc even if they can't afford or get all the staff the place clearly needs. That would cost just a few thousand pounds.
The entrance building must have cost millions of pounds but the rest of the museum is very poor indeed. We liked the ash footpaths etc - creating a true feeling of the age - but what a huge lost opportunity. We were very disappointed indeed.

We enjoyed exploring the shops and houses and riding on the red bus. I appreciated the living history staff and volunteers, in particular their clothing. They were all really kind and and helpful.
We would have liked a cup of tea and a healthy vegan snack. A free bowl of gruel, vegetable soup or a hunk of bread would have been so wonderful!
However we were in the grounds for 4.5 hours and tried 2 different and very slow moving queues. We gave up and just had the water and biscuits we had brought with us. The previous time we had not expected the food prices to be so high so went hungry. How very in keeping with the1930s! Apart from that we loved the domestic details everywhere. A wonderful 5th visit all in all.

Amazing Staff, amazing memories

The people who work at the museum from the moment my friend and I entered through the gates was absolutely amazing...their knowledge was fantastic...from the ladies in the house's and the chemist, the sweet shop, the record shop to Richard who was in charge of the hardware shop, he was not only funny but very knowledgeable.. memories came flooding back ..
The 1950s/60s street was brilliant, standing in the phone booth and hearing the time was fab and as I said lots of memories came back..we were told off by the school master being in the Elephant and Castle and not in class ..epic 😅 😅 the food in the working institute was fab...everything about the day was just absolutely brilliant...the return visit will be absolutely wonderful too .

Great day out at a reasonable price

Great day out at a reasonable price. I love the BCLM, you get an unlimited yearly pass when you buy a day ticket which is around £23. I love seeing all the old buildings, businesses and vehicles. You can have fish and Chips, a few dinks in the old pubs or I take my own pack lunch. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly. There is even some old buses that you can hop on and off if you don’t want to walk. Personally I think it’s great value for money.

We went today 14/08/23 on our 47th wedding anniversary, last time I went was pre covid. We had a gentle walk around. It was good to see that more streets are being added and will open in 2024. However it would be good to spend some monies on the building that are open. The upstairs windows need new curtains/nets. People were poor but were very house proud. The gardens also looked very unkempt. Saying this we enjoyed the day and staff were very friendly and helpful. If we lived nearer I would enjoy volunteering there.

Disappointed

Car parking: signs and information isn't clear on where you can park/whether you're in fact parked in the Zoo carpark or the museum's, if you're uncertain then this is an issue when purchasing a token to exit the carpark. We weren't the only ones having to walk back to the gift shop to exchange our token for the correct one to be able to leave!
Queues! Everywhere! Despite purchasing tickets online we had to wait in line to enter. It was a really hot day, so not nice to have to wait 20 minutes to buy just a bottle of water. (On a couple of occasions). I feel that it was too crowded, almost every property we visited we had to wait or squeeze past others, just too crowded!
Some staff in shops appeared bored & uninterested but the young guy in the gentleman's outfitters was brilliant! Very friendly, informative & entertaining!
I had fond memories of a previous visit a number of years ago but sadly not so fond after today's.
