I really wanted to love the Bigscreen…
I really wanted to love the Bigscreen Beyond 2e, especially because I bought it mainly for flight simulation and expected a premium PCVR experience.
Unfortunately, my experience so far has been extremely disappointing.
My first headset had problems and eventually had to be replaced. With the replacement, I have continued to experience repeated issues getting the headset to work properly: tracking problems, displays going dark, SteamVR/USB connection problems, lag, and eye tracking that I have still never been able to get working reliably.
A big part of the frustration has also been the tracking setup. The headset never worked properly for me with Base Station V1. Because of that, I had to buy Base Station V2. Then I still faced tracking issues and suspected blind spots, so I ended up buying another V2 base station just to improve coverage.
For such an expensive headset, I did not expect to spend even more money trying to make the basic experience stable and usable.
The most frustrating part is the inconsistency. Sometimes I manage to get everything working after troubleshooting, and then on another day I have problems again. A VR headset at this price should not require this much effort every time I want to use it.
Today was a perfect example. I again had difficulty getting the Beyond 2e running properly. Eventually I gave up, picked up my Pico 4 instead, and it simply worked. Within minutes I was in VR with a smooth and trouble-free experience.
That comparison really summarizes my experience.
The Beyond 2e has some excellent qualities. When it is working correctly, the image quality, OLED displays, small size, and extremely low weight are impressive. I can understand why people love the hardware when everything works.
But for me, reliability and ease of use are just as important as image quality. I want to sit down, start my simulator, put on the headset and fly. I do not want every VR session to potentially become another troubleshooting session.
My Pico 4 currently gives me a much more reliable, smooth, and enjoyable experience simply because I know it will work when I put it on.
I hope Bigscreen continues improving the software, tracking, drivers, and overall reliability of the Beyond 2e, because the hardware has huge potential. But based on my experience so far, I cannot recommend it as a hassle-free premium VR headset.
For such an expensive product, I expected a much more polished and reliable experience.
2/5 stars — impressive hardware, but a very frustrating ownership experience so far.
