Be careful before parting with your money
2020 we gifted our son, daughter-in-law & two granddaughters a two-week holiday with us to New Zealand. We put aside spending money & purchased flights to Christchurch for May 2020 Shopping around for the best deal for two campervans, Britz came back with the best offer & in January 2020 we paid the full $4,040 for the hire of the vans.
Like many, our plans & granddaughters’ excitement was dashed by the closure of New Zealand due to Covid-19. We were disappointed further when Qantas and Britz refused us a refund, but were reassured our trip would be honoured when borders reopened.
In August 2022 we were able to confirm new dates in April 2023. We incurred $50 extra for Qantas to reschedule our tickets.
What horrified me was the Britz van hire trebled from $2020 to $5,963.00 each in less than 3 years!
That's right, a 300% increase.
We either forfeited what we'd already paid & our airfares, or paid up.
This took much of our spending money, significantly impacting our holiday. I understand increases, but this appears little more than price gouging considering Britz retained our full payment for 3 years, refused a refund with a commitment to honor our original booking when travel resumed. We took Britz at their word, but our good faith was not reciprocated.
