So frustrating to deal with

The online order itself went fine. But when I contacted them on chat to ask if they could merge two orders, they said I had to provide EORI/VAT number or else I would bear the financial risk of sending the product (even with shipping insurance). Those numbers are only available for companies, so I could not get them. I tried to explain them this, even sent proof from my country’s Customs service. They used the same manuscript every day. In the end I asked them to cancel the order, and after 3 frustrating weeks with procrastination they finally refunded the money (earning interests I am sure).

The issue here is that they don’t know my country’s import regulations and obviously mix countries (they asked for a Swiss ID number, and I live in Norway). Still they insist that they are right and I am wrong.

It has been frustrating and you should be very careful if buying from them, as this is my worst ever experience with customer service. Alternatively hope that your product has no flaws and you don’t need to contact them. If you live in Norway or Switzerland you have to provide your full ID number to get the product, and I would not recommend sending that to China.

Absolutely TERRIBLE customer service

Absolutely TERRIBLE customer service. I have been working on a return for almost a month. They have stated I do not have pictures attached we d to my email in which I do and they are refusing to cancel an order that has not yet shipped and I am going to be stuck with that too!

FRAUD! - I'm stuck with a defective device!

FRAUD! I wanted to return my Chessnut Move because it was causing problems. I first contacted them via the service hotline. But when it came to the actual return, I didn't get a response! I then tried using a new sender email address, but the same thing happened: I got a response at first, but when it came to the actual return, I didn't get a response! Now I'm stuck with a defective device!

Chessnut sets are revolution in digital chess boards

I bought both Chessnut Move (delivery to the UK) and Chessnut Pro, the former for studies, the latter for playing blitz / rapid.

The former has revolutionised the way I study chess and serves as a bridge from solving puzzles to real games.

The latter is an amazing tool to play any time control with friends who aren't too eager to record their moves with pen and paper

Arrived in good order

I was concerned about reviews about postage to the UK. So I contacted Chessnut to verify all would be okay. I got a good reply. My order did take a while to be delivered, because it was coming from China. It did arrive in good order and there were no extra charges. So I am pleased with the service.

Unprofessional conduct, hidden charges and 10 days with my money held hostage

I placed an order from Chessnut Tech on October 13. Three days later I received an unexpected email from a non-official address demanding an extra USD 170 for shipping — a fee that was never disclosed at checkout and directly contradicts their own Terms & Conditions.

From October 13 to October 23, my money was essentially held hostage. I repeatedly contacted Chessnut, and every 1–2 days I received the same automated, copied message. No real support, no explanation, no attempt to resolve anything — just a bot repeating the same template response over and over.

When I refused to pay undisclosed, last-minute charges, they simply cancelled the order without my consent. They silently issued a refund on October 23 without notifying me in any way. Had I not checked everything manually, I wouldn’t have known the refund even happened.

The issue is not the refund itself — it’s the attitude.
Chessnut openly violates its own rules, provides zero real communication, and makes every problem the customer’s problem. If anything goes wrong, you are completely on your own. No support, no responsibility, no accountability.

After this experience, I strongly advise avoiding this company. The product may be good, but the customer service is among the worst I’ve encountered.from Chessnut Tech on October 13. Placed two orders on the same day

Placed two orders on the same day. Paid the standard $39.99 delivery charge on both orders. A day later I received an email telling me they had found out it would cost more to deliver and I needed to pay a further $144 delivery charge to have my order delivered. I live in a major UK city and not a remote part of the country. Their own website states $39.99 delivery charge and no mention of further delivery charges. I’ve emailed them back and contacted them on chat this morning but not had a response yet. Very disappointing as I wanted this as a present for my son for Christmas so was already worried it may not get here in time, now it is further delayed and I may well be cancelling if they insist on this extra charge as they think it’s okay to add further charges on after taking my money and my order, changing our contract, and have no transparency. Very disappointing experience after spending a substantial sum with them.

5/5. Bought chessnut move.

Thought it would be a long wait. However they sent from an EU hub. Got it 4 days after ordered. That was unexpectedly fast. No hidden costs, no VAT, no anything. Perfect.

The board itself works almost perfectly (it made a couple of little mistakes few times - but mostly because I was doing something wrong). Very impressive.
