It’s a script
It’s a script. Every once in a blue moon I will get a reasonable person who will allow me to talk through my problem. Otherwise, you will first spend 20 min or so telling the “counselor” whether you are a harm to yourself due to five minutes pauses between all responses.
Next, you will be asked what has helped you in the past. If you knew this you wouldn’t have to call, right? This is followed by breathing or 54321 (which everyone already knows) and possibly someone creating a safety plan, which just consists of things to do that you already mentioned and likely knew already and people to call. Totally useless. If you are lucky enough, you will be given a list of the most tripe things to do to calm yourself, like going for a walk or taking a bubble bath.
That’s it.
If they think you might be a risk, they may offer to call back in a few days. This will occur during the times you say NOT to call, and will occur daily, annoying the crap out of you and being a real nuisance.
Sometimes reading the reviews is more…
Sometimes reading the reviews is more helpful. It takes way too long and it's not really clear on what crisis means and every single time you get a different experience and some are more rigid than others. I've had people leave the chat. It doesn't help that there's no transparency. But it's free so there's that but if you are able to get someone good they just listen and you don't really get all that much help
I can't believe this is legal
I can't even say enough of how horribly this line is handled. I have screenshots of the robotic text"conversation" that has gone back and forth since a bit after midnight. The crisis wasn't for me but I was seeking help for someone else. I'm currently STILL waiting in line for a counselor and it's been over 3 hours, now moving closer to 4. No one should ever endure this while trying to seek help. I'm sitting outside my friends door and it's after 3:40am but I don't want to leave him feeling abandoned so until he can respond to me verbally, I'm camped out here. I'm hoping that things improve soon because it's cold out here and I'm physically sick. In my opinion, please do yourself a favor and DO NOT CALL/TEXT this center of you need immediate help. You'd have a better chance of talking to anyone else.
I think I'm just going to end the wait for the "counselor" and try to talk to him again. Maybe he can communicate with me now. I hope that someone of authority reads these reviews because something definitely needs to change on how this "crisis hotline" is being handled.
Ungrateful for the volunteers
I am reviewing the organization as a potential volunteer. They helped me when I needed it and I wanted to give back by volunteering. I filled out their application, forgot all about it, and two months later received the most bizarre rejection letter. They could not "offer" me training at this time, and cannot divulge the reasons. Seriously? I volunteered my time for free. I am the one who was offering. Next time try "Thank you for your generous offer to volunteer, but we are short of openings in our training program at this time." They said I could reapply in six months but why would I? It is their loss and it is not like they are going to pay me for the inconvenience.
I only bring it up because it tells me something about the culture of the organization. Not very humble considering its stated mission.
Rang in tears
Rang in tears. She asked me a bunch of stupid questions. Promised a nurse ring me back in foyr hours. No one rang.
Spent waiting 3 hours for support
Spent waiting 3 hours for support that never came. Total garbage. Dont enter if you need help, you won't get it here. Ever.
An unlicensed stranger on Discord would have been more helpful.
The few times I've tried to reach out to the crisis line over the last seven years, I have had nothing but terrible experiences. I really thought nothing would top the time a volunteer called me dramatic and left the chat when I was literally having a paranoid schizophrenic breakdown four years ago, but I really think this morning took the cake. Now I'm not an AI bro, but I'm pretty sure I was not talking to a real human. And if I was, then they're really not doing a great job in training their volunteers still. No warmth. Absolutely no personality behind the unsympathetic tone of the words I was reading. "Do you have anyone safe you can talk to about this?" "I've stated multiple times already that I do not." "That's rough. Everyone needs someone to talk to." Wow! I really didn't know that! And the whole time it was "You're taking a while to respond. If the chat times out, I wouldn't want you to feel abandoned." Only to, at the "end" of our conversation (there was no indication that it was ending soon) send me an unhelpful link for the exact therapist in my town that I told her I refuse to see for past malpractice I experienced, and mind you I SAID THE THERAPISTS NAME AND OFFICE NAME BEFORE SHE SENT THE LINK, and then unprompted send a message along the lines of "Well that all sounds rough, but don't worry tomorrow will be better!" and completely end the chat. When I tell you that sent me spiraling even worse than I was before I even sent my first message to the line this morning, that's probably an understatement. And that is exactly how I have felt every. single. time. I have had the displeasure of being forced to use the crisis line. Abhorrent. I wouldn't be surprised if more people have ended their lives after using the crisis line than not.
Horrendous, dismissive nightmare
Every call is the same.
First you will be asked what’s wrong. You will then upon being given a counselor asked the same thing back to back.
If you say you are suicidal, they won’t do a single thing about it. They will also ask you again if you are suicidal when you already said you were.
Every single conversation they will ask if you have any friends and family to call. If you did, you probably wouldn’t have called. They will then ask you what you did in the past that helps, tell you to do that, and hang up. EVERY. SINGLE. CALL.
They will occasionally send you remarkably unhelpful and even insulting links. Many involve being off topic to your call, and others are coping technique sheets that involve such ingenious activities as walking the dog, lighting a candle, and chewing gum.
I would also like to point out I was put on hold for an incredible amount of time when I made an attempt.
Your four year old nephew is more insiteful, and may even make you chuckle. I have not a clue what these buffoons think they do to help. I often end up I listened to and more suicidal.
Rang crisis line UK
Rang crisis line UK. Its just as bad as USA. Lady not interested in giving me advice. Just interested in doing you in to third parties. Has no empathy. Is mentally ill herself. As most mental health staff are. And in any case mental health is a views and othodoxy are a load of misfounded rubbish.
Don’t use this service
Don’t use this service. These are not trained professionals on the line. I had a terrible experience with them. At a time I need to talk to someone as I’m planning my suicide, the operator did not try to relate with me and just kept asking questions about things I told her I didn’t want to discuss. When I was getting upset because they wouldt let me speak with a supervisor or give me their first name, they hung up on me multiple times. They will also call the authorities if you discuss plans to take your life. Now I see why there are articles where people warn others not to use the service. NPR has an article about the many negative experiences people have shared online.
I called the crisis line to help calm…
I called the crisis line to help calm me down from an unhinged panic attack . They called the police and I was wrongfully arrested . My kid was so scared he was hiding under my bed as two Hispanic police officers attacked me and pinned me against the wall for all my neighbors to see . My kid was taken away and given to a DCFS agent. I was jailed for five days without a bond for resisting arrest…. I lost both my cars to tow lot fees, had to reopen an abusive relationship with my family bc I’d rather give my son to my abusers than to the city of LA. I endured a heart attack in jail with zero medical concern from staff . Had an officer clock out after telling her I couldn’t breathe. Was handcuffed to a chair in a holding cell screaming for medical attention while every officer walked by my cell and laughed as I cried and pleaded for my son and to see a doctor. The toilet in my cell was connected to the sink . I wore the same clothes for 5 days . The officers left my pet without food and water , she was extremely skinny when I got back home. They locked my keys in my apartment , so a kind neighbor had to climb through the window to help me back in once I was released into the street in the middle of the night with a dead phone and no wallet. I never saw a judge , charges were dropped and the situation has been swept under the rug . I will never ever consider calling this hotline again and will yell from the rooftops of every city building to anyone who will listen NEVER CALL THIS HOTLINE ! After spending all this time in jail , I developed heart issues. I failed my anatomy course because I couldn’t get my grades up. I fell into a deep depression and couldn’t even get up to wash my ass or eat for several days . I relied a lot on marijuana to regulate after the phone call . I am going to sue LAPD and the officers involved. And I’m also holding the crisis hotline accountable for sending untrained people who cosplay as cops to “help” me.
Robotic, but their heart's in the right place?
It felt like I was talking to Chat GPT more than a real human, but that's probably due to their script? It felt more like false warmth than genuine care.
Bloody useless after waiting for 45…
Bloody useless after waiting for 45 mins she kept apologizing about the wait and then said go watch a movie and call us back when the movie ends like no I'm not calling you back to wait another 45 mins and have a 5 min Convo about how I'm being difficult, after I told her I'm not suicidal. They only care if your suicidal and if you are they tell you to go to ED.
They sound like bots
Called said suicidal depressed abused self harm, they asked my plans for the evening I said get smashed they said good idea(!) and gave a good evening. !
ChatGPT LITERALLY would do a better…
ChatGPT LITERALLY would do a better job. I had Theresa or whatever? I don’t even remember her name I deleted the conversation because I felt so frustrated. There’s no way in hell that she refused to literally affirm or sympathize with the gravity of the situation I was goin through after telling her I was suicidal and nearly self harming myself? She refused to literally just empathize that the situation I was going through was sh/tty and just kept saying I could only offer you resources to go forward. It’s like someone talking to you about what causes their depression and then you telling them that I can’t tell you that that sucks but here’s a list of sh/t you could do to feel better! You’re supposed to hear the person out! If I wanted to f/cking only get resources but NO EMPATHETIC LISTENING then I would have looked up “how to not feel suicidal” on Google. Get out of her with this generic ass information that you think you’re “helping” someone with. Nothing will help if you don’t console a clearly upset person first.. this line is a f/cking joke.
It was horrible.
It was horrible. When I talked to them during a crisis, they didn't even help me with my issues. They threw it off as if it was just a small issue. I do not recommend.
Don't get a reply back unless saying…
Don't get a reply back unless saying busy. And that was after messaging help messages, that workers needed to be found.
48 hour limit???
I’m in a crisis, but I can’t talk with them for another 48 hours??? I could have a knife to my wrist. What sort of nonsense is this??? I’m told it’s to “respect their boundaries”??? How about you do your jobs??? Wish I could send a screenshot.
I do not even know if I was texting a real human
The responses I got were so bland and generic, that I seriously think I might have been chatting with a bot. When messaging, I suddenly just stopped being replied to without any warning. I actually feel better now because this hotline was so bad it made me laugh for the first time in months.
If ChatGPT made a crisis line
I feel like a better name for this company would be "Minor Inconvenience Text Line", because their services are going to do more harm than good if you're experiencing any more than that. The messages I received were robotic (to the point where I was genuinely considering the possibility that I was messaging a chat bot), superficial, and felt as though they were pulled from a script. For those who feel unheard, these cookie-cutter responses are more than likely going to make their feelings worse. Additionally, the conversation was pushed along in record time. Being rushed is the last feeling that you want to give someone that's in crisis. I brought up multiple issues, but only one or two were even acknowledged, nevermind any resources being given. Of the issues that were addressed, they were the ones with the most obvious answers; much to my dismay, as I only disclosed those issues for additional context for the more significant issues that I actually needed help addressing (ie issues that can't be addressed with a google search). As a final nail in the coffin, the counselor that I was connected with disconnected before ensuring that I was no longer in crisis, or before checking in with my reception to the session at all. I would not recommend the use of this text line to anyone, nevermind this as someone's last resort. It's extremely concerning to me that an organization with such a lack of quality control and blatant effort to get their "number of people helped" statistics up is the first result when searching for a text line when in crisis. It would not be surprising to me if this organization has caused people to stop seeking help after reaching out to them; not because their issues have been addressed, but because they feel even more helpless.
