We couldn't be happier with Dewey…

We couldn't be happier with Dewey Smart! Helping our daughter navigate the NYU application process for the Class of 2030 felt overwhelming given their low acceptance rate, but Dewey Smart was a game-changer. They helped her develop a unique 'theme' that connected her extracurriculars to her major at CAS, which really made her application stand out. Dasha, her essay coach, was top-notch. She helped our daughter find her voice without over-editing. Our daughter was accepted Early Decision, and we truly believe Dewey Smart made the difference. Highly recommend for any parent aiming for a top-tier school!

Great experience!

Great experience! Katelyn was very helpful and attentive to my needs. She has kept me up to date and on time with all of my application due dates. I started the college application process feeling very overwhelmed, but with help from someone knowledgeable and responsible I was able to successfully submit my applications.

I paid more than $3K and had 2 sessions…

I paid more than $3K and had 2 sessions with them. Why would someone waste $3K on 2 sessions. It was bad enough to not waste time.
First they showed a perfect mentor and switched her because she had too many students to help. Then they put another one who was equally swamped. We couldn't get a college list recommendation from the advisor or either of the mentors when they had gone towards similar career path.
Basically one has to do one's own research and just bounce stuff off them. Can I get a template for a research report. Sorry, cant share even a template. But then the advisor would want to sell a whole research stream service on the side.
We were offered to get advisory on applying for aid/ FAFSA and each of them is a separate fee.

Save your money. Go with one on one services. These guys are slave master with 8+ candidates per advisor student alongside a full time post grad workload.

Hello Yash,

Thank you for the feedback, and I’m sorry your experience fell short—especially given you paid upfront and expected consistent, actionable support.

A bit of context: we work with “near-peer” mentors (current and graduated students from top universities). When a mentor’s availability changes, we sometimes re-match to protect continuity and ensure you can actually get time on the calendar. That said, the handoff should feel seamless, and you should never feel like you’re bouncing between overloaded people or not getting the core deliverables you came for (like a college list and clear next steps). We missed the mark here.

On FAFSA/aid: that work is handled by a specialized advisor we bring in separately, because it’s a different skill set than general admissions mentoring. We should have communicated the scope and pricing more clearly upfront.

If you’re open to it, I’d like to make this right. Please email support@deweysmart.com (or call (877) 749-6539) with the email on the account and your timeline, and I’ll personally review what happened, confirm your remaining hours, and ensure you’re matched with someone who has the capacity to support you reliably.

Big Promises, Zero Delivery! Stay Away from Dewey Smart

Dewey Smart was a huge disappointment. All the counselors were college students with no real experience. My child is a senior, and the ones assigned to us were completely unprofessional. Their calendars were booked weeks into admission season, and even then, they kept canceling at the last minute.
We ended up using barely 2 hours of actual service in three months because no one was available or responsive. The so-called “guaranteed internships” are a total scam — they just send a list of random links, half of which don’t even work. No one actually helps or guides you through anything.
Their website is slow, buggy, and badly managed. The only good thing is they refunded the money, but by then we had already lost valuable time we should have spent working on essays early.
If you care about your child’s college applications, avoid Dewey Smart. They waste time and give you nothing useful in return.

Tanvi — I’m sorry for the experience you described. For a senior in admissions season, booked-out calendars, last-minute cancellations, and slow responsiveness are unacceptable, and I understand the opportunity cost of lost time on essays.

A couple clarifications for future families:
• “Guaranteed internships.” In the past we offered a separate program that included a refund guarantee tied to internship outcomes. We have since discontinued that program and do not market internship outcomes as “guaranteed” today. If anything you received felt like a generic link list (or had broken links), that’s not the standard we want and we’ve updated how we handle opportunities and guidance.
• Website / platform performance. We’ve rebuilt our public website and also replaced our internal operating system with Gigpie, which is faster and more reliable. We continue shipping improvements to scheduling, communication, and accountability to prevent exactly the coordination issues you ran into.

I’m glad you received a refund, but I recognize that doesn’t restore the time you lost. If you’re open to it, please email support@deweysmart.com with the name/email on the account and “Tanvi Roy review” in the subject so I can personally review what happened (availability, cancellations, responsiveness) and ensure we learn from it.

To all parents looking for counseling…

To all parents looking for counseling and essay help for your kids. Please don’t hire Dewey smart. They are nothing but catfish.
I paid in full for a 10 hr class for college Counseling and 5 hr for SAT prep based on their info on the website and initial conversation. It looked promising. The counselors they picked for me were mere college students with no counseling experience and none from those listed on their fake website. The portal assigned to us for scheduling never worked. IT IS A FAKE COLLEGE PROGRAM WHOSE ONLY GOAL IS TO LOOT THE MONEY OF FAMILIES. Their portal doesn’t work, their entire brand is a fraud, and even worse all their counselors are uneducated college students who don’t have any strong heart for their students and who don’t want to help their students at all. They don’t refund their clients, even further showing that they only care about the money. Please avoid this at all costs and I would even recommend my neighbor as a college counselor than them because of how awful they are. Seriously, anyone who even is contemplating about even trying this service needs to seriously rethink their standards. Because of this, we are 5,000 dollars short of what we had before. This is one of the worst decisions I have ever made in my entire life. SCAM SCAM SCAM. Save your money folks. Let’s put a demise to this fake college business.

Thank you for sharing this. I’m sorry your family had an experience that led you to feel this strongly — issues like an unusable scheduling portal, mismatched support, and difficulty resolving refunds are serious.

For context to anyone reading: the situation described here occurred before I acquired Dewey Smart and before the current operating team and systems were in place. That said, I take this review seriously because it highlights failures that should not happen in any education service.

Since the acquisition, we have:
• replaced the scheduling/support portal and improved reliability and responsiveness
• tightened matching and oversight so families know who they’re working with and what deliverables to expect
• clarified packaging and refund/escalation processes so concerns don’t get stuck

If you are willing, I’d like to look up your account and understand what happened (including the package purchased, hours used, and the refund status). Please email support@deweysmart.com with the name and email used on the account and the approximate purchase date, and I will personally review it and ensure you receive a clear resolution.

Unqualified Counselors, Poor Service – Avoid Dewey Smart

We signed up for Dewey Smart’s 40-hour counseling program expecting expert guidance, but were very disappointed. We eventually had to leave their services after a few months—it was more of a time waste, and we made better progress working on our own. The counselors assigned were college students who lacked the experience to guide us beyond generic responses. Despite sharing detailed feedback multiple times, our concerns were ignored and our card was charged without notice, we were never even provided with the receipt of our payment and the signed agreement. Communication was poor, and leadership was unresponsive. This service may be useful for essay editing and applications where students do have personal experience, but not for comprehensive college counseling. Would not recommend for families seeking serious, personalized guidance.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY —but if you truly can’t find any other counseling service on earth, do yourself a favor and start with just a few hours. Believe me, you’ll save your money.

Thank you for sharing this. I’m sorry your family had an experience that felt unresponsive and not worth the investment — especially around billing transparency, receipts/agreements, and repeated feedback not being addressed.

For context to anyone reading: this experience occurred before I acquired Dewey Smart and before the current operating team and processes were in place. That said, the issues you raised are serious, particularly:
• being charged without clear notice
• not receiving a receipt and signed agreement
• concerns being ignored and leadership not responding

Since the acquisition, we’ve changed how we operate to prevent exactly this:
• automatic receipts and agreement delivery at purchase/signature, with easy re-send on request
• clear billing communication (what will be charged, when, and why)
• defined escalation path so feedback is acknowledged and resolved quickly
• more structured counseling deliverables so families receive specific, personalized guidance rather than generic responses

If you’re willing, I’d like to locate your account and confirm what happened with the charges and documentation. Please email support@deweysmart.com with the name/email on the account and the approximate purchase date, and I will personally review the record and ensure you receive a clear written explanation and any appropriate remedy.
