Great shop with a huge selection of tasty foods from Eastern Europe, highly recommended.
On 20 November 2025 I entered Beryozka / Eastern European Foods (89-93 High Street, Glasgow) to make a simple purchase. I am a registered disabled person with severe anxiety and mental health conditions. The item was already in my hand.
As soon as staff recognised me, one employee immediately phoned a woman shown on the caller ID as “Maria”. Maria then used the loudspeaker and shouted directly at me that they would “physically throw me out”, that “we don’t care about UK laws” and, when I informed them I was having a panic attack triggered by their aggression, they laughed and repeatedly said “we don’t care about your disability”.
Maria falsely and repeatedly claimed to be the owner of the shop (the real owners are Mr Boyd and Tatyana — Maria is just an ordinary employee with no authority whatsoever to refuse service or threaten customers).
Their aggressive behaviour and open mockery of my visible disability caused an immediate severe mental health crisis. I had to leave the shop and seek emergency psychological support at the nearby Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH) office the same day.
This appears to be retaliation for my earlier legitimate complaint: two months ago I bought sealed dried fish here that contained live maggots and worms (photos + receipt attached). I reported it — they ignored me completely and tried to remove my honest Google review instead of fixing the hygiene issue.
This is blatant disability discrimination, failure to make reasonable adjustments, discrimination arising from disability, and victimisation under the Equality Act 2010 — plus threats of violence and possible illegal use of my personal data (they knew my full name without permission).
I have reported the incident to Police Scotland (hate crime / disability aggravation), Glasgow City Council Environmental Health, Equality and Human Rights Commission, EASS, and ICO.
No person with a disability should ever be treated this way. Staff who mock mental health crises and believe they are above the law have no place serving the public in Glasgow.
