Arrived on schedule from Barcelona before midnight to the desk in Pisa, Italy. Guy at counter says afterhour fee coming on top. I ask how much - 60 euro extra. I have to accept.

After preparing all papers - he says 2,600 euro deposit will be made from my credit-card. I try four credit-cards of mine, but as end of the month - none having this limit available.

Other option he gives is to go lower and only they take deposit 500 euro but this will cost me 49 euro extra.

Kids sleeping and have to accept - in total 109 euro extra on top of the 450 euro for the car.

We did now not have the planned start and vacation at all and it took me a few days to get rid of the bad feeling.

When giving the car back - I was very alert and this guy was kind and signed on my paper that they accepted tank was full and no new damages.

Will now check my credit-card accounts soon and hope no further surprises. Until now they charged med 129 euro instead of 109 euro.....Hope nothing more coming.

Never again Firefly - better you/we all pay a little extra for more well-known company.

Never use Firefly or Hertz again - cars are dangerous and Hertz customer service is the worst ever - don't ever use them!

This just about explains my frustration with Hertz, A copy of a part of my email to them.

"Dear Hertz, Expedia & Firefly,

On the 22nd of June we arrived at Verona Airport ready to pick up our hire car as detailed below. When we booking there was NO mention of a deposit to be taken on arrival, once paid for there is a mention of a credit card required however no mention why or for what purpose, nor for what value.

When we got to the Hertz desk we were told they wanted a massive £1,500 deposit for the car. There are a few major issues here.

NOWHERE does it say you will require a £1,500 deposit
We have already paid for insurance with yourselves
We do not use credit cards and you took payment on a visa debit card
The only mastercard we use (for security purposes) is a pre-paid one which definitely does not have a standing balance of £1,500
Most people renting a car will NOT have a available spare balance of £1,500 on their card.
By my investigation I can therefore conclude that you are 1) miss-marketing 2) providing incorrect information regarding fees 3) causing distress on what should be a simple transaction.

What we ended up doing was renting a car from another company (Autovia) that cost 3 times the price, took half of our spending money and did not require a card.

Because of you poor descriptions and failure to mention £1,500 deposit required we were unable to take part in the excursions we planed on doing, therefore due to your mis-marketing we did not have the holiday we planned.

I therefore want the following from you before I forward this on to trading standards."

Wir hatten über die Fluggesellschaft in Deutschland gemietet und bezahlt. Am Flughafen suchten wir ewig , bis sich ein Konkurrent erbarmte und uns erzählte, dass der Anbieter kilometerweit entfernt sitzt. Da wir einen Termin mit dem Vermieter unserer Ferienwohnung hatten, konnten wir nicht auf den „Shuttle-Bus“ warten , und nahmen ein Taxi!
Bei der Ankunft erwartete uns eine längere Schlange und unfreundliches Personal. Nachdem zuerst die Zuständigkeit bestritten wurde, fand man auf unser Drängen heraus, dass Auto Europe (o. ä. ) identisch ist mit Firefly .Dann wollte man uns eine Zusatzversicherung aufschwatzen, wir wussten aber, dass unsere vorhandene – belächelte - Versicherung besser ist. Es fand sich auch niemand, der mit uns den Wagen angeschaut hättte, um Macken zu protokollieren etc. ,außerdem wurden die – Gott sei Dank – mitgebrachten PC-Ausdrucke des Vertrags angezweifelt und obwohl 2 Fahrer eingetragen waren hätten wir noch mal einige hundert Euro zahlen müssen, wenn wir darauf bestanden hätten. Entnervt rollten wir vom Hof , das Auto war allerdings OK. Wunderbarer weise hatten wir auch keinen Unfall, obwohl der Verkehr in Catania und Taormina eher an exotischere Länder erinnert.
