Poor experience with Garage Tec in Austin
Wanted to share my honest experience of attempting to work with this company when I asked them to come out to service an automatic gate that was failing at my home. I hope no one else has this experience, and encourage everyone to do their research. Please note that do not normally give negative reviews (this is my first) and I aim to support small businesses, but I was very disappointed with this company.
1. In calling them to attempt to fix my gate, they said they charged an $80 service fee. Turns out that is just for someone to come to the house and not actually touch the machine. To diagnose the machine, that costs $300.
2. I regrettably chose to move forward with Garage Tec doing the diagnosis - with the technician onsite, I didn't have time to research whether $300 was reasonable or not (it's not, I've received quotes from 3 other companies who either diagnosed for free or had diagnosis fees that were less than 50% of that cost). Not to mention, turns out the diagnosis that my automatic gate had a bad board was incorrect, as I discovered from ultimately working with a more reputable company.
3. The quote to fix the board was over 3X the cost of other companies to do the same repair ($2k from GT, vs. $600 from another provider). We also needed a few links added to the chain to get it working and they were going to charge $350 for that, which other providers would not charge at all. Clearly they were attempting to upcharge every chance they could get.
4. They also quoted the cost for a new machine at $5k vs. ~$4k from other providers (though admittedly one of the 4 companies I reached out to did quote higher at $5.25k).
What's been particularly frustrating has been the lack of professionalism from the Garage Tec team during and after having them at my home and when I voiced my concerns about my experience. Please do your research on costs and be aware of some of their deceptive (disguising diagnosis fees) and unethical business practices (overcharging customers).
