Polyester is not eco-friendly.

The shirts are polyester. Geeknit is a euphamism the company uses instead of saying polyester/spandex blend. Had I known that, I would not have spent 42 dollars on a shirt. Something tells me Geek Tropical knows this, as they make a point to never actually use the word polyester in their product listings. I find this practice disingenuous. I also find their claims about sustainability disingenuous, as all of the eco-friendly inks they advertise are being printed onto shirts made of plastic. Overall, I have not found their products to be worth the money, which is unfortunate considering the company seems to be run by nice people.

Hi Bjorn,

We're sorry this wasn't what you expected, and we really wish we'd gotten the chance to talk it through, because this is a topic we're passionate about.

On the material, you're right that it should be clear before you buy. Geeknit is our own polyester and spandex blend, custom developed for us rather than pulled off a shelf, which is part of what sets the feel and the print apart. It's listed on our FAQ today, and we'd have been happy to clarify the fabric if you'd reached out. Please send us your order number and we'll make this right. We have some fabric updates in the works, so we're refreshing the material details across our listings as part of that rollout to keep everything accurate.

We are firm believers that what we are doing right now is the eco-friendliest considering all of our options. Dye-sublimation is the most common process for vivid, permanent all-over prints and the only made-to-order option. We will skip over the technical details but the important fact is that this process does not work with natural materials alone. Even a natural shirt has to be coated in a plastic polymer to hold an all-over print, so you are still using plastic. And that coating breaks down and fades, so it never holds the print the way the synthetic fiber does. There are alternatives to sublimation, such as reactive printing where the ink does form a chemical bond with cotton fibers, but this is not available for made-to-order because the process takes significant amounts of water, energy, and specific chemical processes. Every material has tradeoffs, even polyester. Made-to-order greatly minimizes waste as we are only producing what is needed at each time and allows us to support as much human art as possible.

Additionally, unlike the vast majority of other made-to-order companies, we happily offer returns and exchanges, a very rare policy for made-to-order. Even rarer, we resell returns despite the time, cost, and management associated with stocking products that did not have shelf space before, all in an effort to minimize waste and our impact on the planet.

Thank you for giving us a try and mahalo for supporting a small business and the artists behind our prints.

Science Teacher Approved!

I’ve been extremely impressed with Geek Tropical. Their shirts do a fantastic job of combining science, education, and fun in a way that appeals to both teachers and students. The designs are creative, conversation-starting, and make science more visible and approachable outside the classroom. The quality of the shirts has been excellent, and it’s clear that a lot of thought goes into each design.

As a science teacher, I’d love to see Geek Tropical explore ideas inspired by the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) that many science teachers use every day. There are so many opportunities for educational button-up shirts that would be both stylish and useful in the classroom.

Some ideas include:

• Plant and animal cells with labeled organelles incorporated into the design.
• A cloud identification shirt featuring different cloud types spread across a sky-blue background, allowing students to literally point to the cloud they’re discussing.
• Volcanoes showcasing various types such as cinder cones, shield volcanoes, composite volcanoes, stratovolcanoes, and hot spot volcanoes scattered throughout the pattern.
• Constellations arranged across a night-sky design.
• The human body featuring major organ systems and anatomical structures.
• Simple machines such as levers, inclined planes, wheel-and-axle systems, pulleys, wedges, and screws incorporated into a fun repeating pattern.

I think these designs would be incredibly popular with science teachers, STEM educators, museums, and science enthusiasts. Geek Tropical has already shown they can turn educational concepts into wearable art, and NGSS-inspired shirts could open up an exciting new collection for educators everywhere.

Hi Charlie,

What a wonderful review, thank you for taking the time! Hearing that the shirts start up conversations and get science "out there" outside the classroom is everything we aim for and coming from a science teacher is even more validating.

The ideas you have are wonderful and all great ideas for new shirt designs. We're keeping them and sharing them with a few artists that we believe would be a good fit in creating them.

We would genuinely love to hear more in the future or anything that particularly resonated with your students. You and educators like you are who we are excited to design for. Mahalo for your support and everything you do.

Legit company, runs small

Placed order on the 10th, order arrived on the 22nd. They are sent out to be custom printed when you order unless you’ve chosen a ready-to-ship item. The print on the fabric is very sharp, looks exactly as advertised. The fitted women’s shirts are flattering, but run small. There is no way I’ll ever be able to button them across my chest- order at least one size up. The fabric is thin, polyester, and has a plastic, costume, feel to it. I’m not exchanging them for a larger size- I’ll just wear them open over a t-shirt and know better next time.

We appreciate your honest feedback and are glad to hear your order arrived on time and that you found the print quality sharp and true to the images.

Regarding the fabric — we completely understand how it might feel different from what you expected. Our shirts are made using a high-quality synthetic blend specifically designed for sublimation printing. This process is the only way to achieve the kind of full-coverage, high-definition artwork you see in our designs. No other printing method can reproduce these colors or all-over effects on a wearable garment.

Because sublimation ink chemically bonds to synthetic fibers, heavy cotton or thicker natural fabrics simply cannot be printed this way — the ink won’t absorb or stay vibrant. We’ve worked hard to find the ideal balance between comfort, color depth, and structure. Any thicker material would cause cracking, fading, or visible white stretch lines in the artwork — results that most customers find far less desirable.

We truly appreciate you recognizing that the design looks as advertised, and we hope that understanding the technical side of sublimation helps put the material choice into perspective. We’re proud to be one of the only made-to-order brand with these types of products offering a clear return and exchange policy, and we’ll always stand behind the quality of what we create.

Mahalo for supporting a small business and the artists behind our prints.

Sizes vary wildly, good customer service

I go between a men's L and XL, so I ordered four shirts in an XL to be safe. When they arrived, they were so small I couldn't button them around my waist, even though they were marked XL. They did give me replacements in a 2X once I'd returned the originals, and were super polite and helpful. But the shirts that arrived are enormous, like mumus on me. I don't know if there was an error the first time, but it seems like their sizing is totally random.

The material isn't great, but it does look good and the colors are strong.

We appreciate your feedback and are glad to hear our team was able to assist you promptly and provide replacements.

After reviewing our records, we confirmed that the original shirts returned were checked for accuracy, as we do with every exchange, and the sizing was correct according to our published size chart. It seems likely that your measurements fall between two sizes, which can make finding the right fit more challenging—especially with fitted button-ups designed to taper through the waist.

We're always happy to help customers and we wish we’d had the chance to assist you further after you have received your replacements.

We appreciate you recognizing our service and print quality, and we’ll continue to refine our sizing guidance to make future orders even easier.

Mahalo for supporting our small business and artist community.

Saddened by the quality of fabric

I was quite surprised and disappointed at the quality of the shirts ordered - the print is crisp and clear, but the fabric is a very thin, slippery four-way-stretch polyester. It feels like the kind of fabric you might expect fancy dress costumes to be made of, and hangs on the body shapeless, flat, but somehow oddly noisy to wear. Swishes as you move.

All the photos on the website clearly try and make the shirts look crisp, structured and smart, but they are shiny and slippery, stretchy, puckering a little around the hems. Printed on the outside, white on the inside. I can't imagine why anyone would knowingly choose to wear this fabric and, were the photos on the website a bit more realistic a representation, I wouldn't have considered buying them.

The website states that you can return unworn, unwashed items for a refund on any 'ready-to-ship' items, but not their "made-to-order" items. But every item seems to be "made-to-order", so there are no refunds.

The shirts were not unreasonably expensive, and delivery was fairly fast, but the packaging has a sticker on it stating that you have to have video of the package being opened to make any 'future product claims'. Had this been stated anywhere on their website I would have avoided purchasing from them.

If you're just looking for a bit of fancy dress, or something for a theme party, or a festival, then I guess these shirts might be fine. They've got arms and collars and buttons.

We'd bought shirts for our wedding. It's very disappointing to have thrown away £70 and be back to trying to find something that I wouldn't be embarrassed to be seen wearing.

Terrible quality, no returns

Terrible quality for the price. They also put a sticker on all their packages requiring you to take a video of yourself opening the package to prove defects (massive red flag). They also don't accept returns, surprise. Buyer beware!
