Jiu jitsu for me is not just a test in physicality and technique but also a mental endurance test, it has helped in more ways than one.

I joined Gracie Tameside in September 2018 aged 51. I’ve always had an interest in self defence and fitness but had never trained any martial art before, in actual fact I knew almost nothing about martial arts or Jiu-Jitsu.

I came across Gracie Tameside on Facebook and looking at their website they seemed to offer what I was interested in. I decided to pluck up the courage and attend a class. Considering my age and having no previous experience I was a little hesitant at first but what immediately hit me when I arrived at the centre was how friendly and welcoming everyone was.

Classes are taught at a steady pace where techniques are broken down and demonstrated by the instructors. You are then given the opportunity to practice and troubleshoot each step with a partner.

The Gracie program is very structured and is very much self defence focussed. This is not the case in all Jiujitsu academies, many of which focus on sports Jiujitsu. As a member you also get access to online content where you can watch every technique/class demonstrated by the Gracie brothers. The combination of the classes and watching the online content helps you learn techniques in the most efficient way.

I’ve now been a member of the Tameside certified training centre for for more than a year and have successfully progressed to the advanced class. Jiu-Jitsu is challenging but with a combination of the Gracie system, qualified instructors and personal effort you will succeed. You’ll also meet a lot of great people in a friendly environment.

Been training at Gracie Tameside for over a year. Good quality training facility, the instructors are friendly and teach in a really user friendly way that is easy to understand and focus on technique and style with structured training program and opportunity to drill moves and spar.
I feel like I have made serious progress since joining and achieved my Gracie combatatives belt in 12months aswell as meeting a good set of people to train with.
The membership includes access to the Gracie University site where u can watch training videos and ask questions.

My family have been attending Gracie Jiu Jitsu Tameside for many years now. I have watched my husband & three children gaining invaluable self defence techniques under the excellent guidance of Head Instructor Alex, to the extent that my eldest son is now an instructor himself! Classes are fun & safe, they build confidence and have an emphasis on respect for others. I myself have recently started my Jiu Jitsu journey, to build confidence & for health & fitness! All our family are looking forward to continuing our Jiu Jitsu journey for many years to come.

Started here in December 2019 and I loved how friendly all the members were. I also found the instructors very good at teaching BJJ that I got my brother to join the gym too.

Excellent coaching, clear curriculum with access to high quality online lesson content, and a welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommended!

Alex and James are extremely friendly and knowledgeable.

Don’t be afraid in anyway as it’s not ‘fighting’ it’s fitness and confidence building.

Its very structured and tiered such that beginners are nicely integrated.

Nearly 12 months ago, I made a phone call to Gracie Jiu Jitsu in tameside. I haven't regretted it one bit. You are welcomed with a smile and a happy 'hello' everyday. Age colour gender religion does not matter, it feels like a 2nd family and we all have the same focus. Instructions are clear and well demonstrated, help is never more than an arms length away.

For anyone thinking of joining, it will be one of the best decisions you can make.

My life is much better, my physical and mental health have improved. I'll be taking my daughter to the kids classes when she gets older too. I cant thank Alex and James enough for the time they've shared and the knowledge passed on.

I've been with Gracie Tameside just over a month now and found the trainers excellent, the people friendly and the techniques taught would really help me in an altercation out on the street. Although I have only just started my journey with Gracie Tameside I hope to learn more from Alex and the Gracie BJJ system.

Having never learned a martial art before, I found Gracie Tameside to be a great and friendly place to start. Everyone is really friendly and helpful. The trainers Alex and James are before excellent teachers - both really patient, friendly and approachable.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the kind of martial art we all dreamed of learning as kids - where the weak nerdy kid beats the bully. Simple and clear lessons, broken down in to easy to understand ‘slices’. If I can follow it anyone can.

Amazing instruction and overall program in place at this academy.
You'll be made to feel welcome from day one and have confidence in your ability in a short time, with regular attendance.
Progression is clear and easily tracked through the superb structure in place.
Ego less, friendly training and overall fitness improvement should be expected when attending this academy.
Any questions, simply approach an instructor- they'll always be happy to answer your questions and to provide demonstrations of any technical details or techniques.

I have been training here for about 6 months and love it, really friendly and motivated people and Alex and James are great instructors. If you want to learn real self defense skills to protect yourself and loved ones then this is a great place to do it.

I’ve been training at GJJT for just under a year and before that trained at a number of other martial arts gyms. I can genuinely say that this is the best place I’ve trained at, Alex and James are great teachers, the classes are well structured and it’s a mint environment to train and learn!
