Failing reference checks due to rejecting employers email address
Myself and my partner have been going through our reference checks for nearly four weeks now. Whilst mine were accepted quickly, my partner is being constantly rejected simply because the email address he is providing for his employer is not a corporate domain as he is a Sole Trader of a small business. Bear in mind it has taken Homeppl two weeks to tell him the exact reason as to why he keeps being rejected after constant back and forth with the same information, just going round in circles - which is they cannot accept “personal domains” when it is not a personal email address.
He has worked for his employer for over a decade and used these exact details for reference checks several times during this period and never has he failed a reference check before. What’s worse is he has not been given an alternative option. So it’s a corporate email address or you fail the reference check? Despite them having access to our bank accounts where they can see his income being paid in each week, his employer has also provided formal documentation with his employment details and can provide payslips but that’s still not good enough.
Because of how long this has taken we are now at risk of losing the property we were hoping to rent. We need to be out of our current property ASAP, are at the risk of being made homeless with two small children which has caused us nothing but unnecessary concern and stress.

I had to go through Homeppl’s verification process because I agreed to act as a guarantor for a family member. I was surprised by how much personal data they requested.
Instead of simply providing payslips or bank statements, they asked to connect directly to my bank account through Open Banking for up to 90 days and link to systems verifying my employment and income. This felt excessive.
I’m also concerned about transparency around how this data is used, stored, and protected, particularly as their terms mention data retention for several years.
While I understand the need for identity and financial checks, the level of access requested felt intrusive and there was not enough clear information about how sensitive personal data is safeguarded.

I needed to chat to someone and was directed to a real person via a chat app. The communication was instant and excellent. Given previous issues (even today) with this type of help service, I was pleasantly surprised.
Incompetent and time wasting
I get a sense of incompetence as I keep on going in circles with Homepp. And they are meant to decide if I can rent, alternative of which is dire.

Completely Incompetent Referencing Process
Our experience with Homeppl has been extremely disappointing and unprofessional.
My husband is self-employed. This was clearly explained from the outset, and all requested documentation was submitted in line with Homeppl’s requirements. Despite this, we were later informed that his business bank account could not be accepted — a point that should have been clarified at the start of the process.
To resolve this, his accountant provided the alternative proof of income explicitly requested by Homeppl. However, this documentation was still rejected without a clear or reasonable explanation.
Rather than working constructively to complete the reference, Homeppl proceeded to cancel the application entirely, forcing us to restart the referencing process from the beginning. When the letting agent attempted to escalate the matter and requested that the case be reopened, Homeppl refused.
As a direct result of these actions, we are now at risk of losing the property we were in the process of renting.
Based on our experience, I would strongly advise landlords and estate agents to carefully reconsider using Homeppl. The service demonstrates a lack of consistency, poor communication, and limited understanding of self-employed applicants.
Terrible service
Terrible service. The staff have virtually no knowledge of real estate. Because of this company, my move-in process did not go smoothly at all, which was extremely disappointing. If a real estate agency uses this company, I strongly recommend not signing a contract with that agency.

Caitlin was so lovely and friendly - I found some of the online sections frustrating to fill as my circumstances are slightly complicated and so I left it for a few weeks. I decided to come back to it but to contact the live support to see if they could help, and Caitlin helped me with everything in such a swift, easy to explain and friendly manner. Great streamlined service for referencing, although portal doesn't leave much room for error.
Made an error with my application and reached out to support. Caitlin was very responsive and helped me fix my error submit my application accurately, all in 15 minutes.
