Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE
The transaction with Horsepower was relatively straightforward with an opportunity to see and test drive the car and inspect it before committing to purchase. This car was sold as a 'Part exchange to clear' vehicle leaving the obligation on a prospective purchaser to view and assess the vehicle,sold without 'any major mechanical or electrical defects'. Since purchase it has covered some 500 miles and various small cosmetic defects consequent upon age have been remedied. I hope it will serve us well. I would not recommend purchasing a vehicle in this way without some mechanical experience or independent inspection particularly as a rather racey overview of the limited service history was provided together with an MOT dated 20.06.2025 with some advisories which had not been attended to. Also Horsepower were unable to make any arrangement for delivery or offer transport from the local train station for collection. Nevertheless customer service was polite at all times.

79 Days for Repair & Unsafe Courtesy Car
I am writing this review to warn potential customers that Horsepower Motor Centre knowingly sold me a faulty car due to cost cutting by not replacing the timing chain and tensioner when they fitted a new cylinder head.
Here is the crucial fact: At the point of sale, the salesperson Jason explicitly told me the white Mini Cooper needed a replacement cylinder head, claiming the original had been "poached for another mini that was sold." I was quite happy that they were fitting a new cylinder head as the car had done 72000 miles, so having a top end engine rebuilt was attractive from a reliability prospective.
I collected the car with its new cylinder head 2 weeks later. Unfortunately and annoyingly, 1500 miles later, it suffered a catastrophic failure, failing to start one morning and was returned via my RAC account.
The car then sat at their garage for 40 days before they diagnosed what was wrong with it.
It then took over 79 days while they still failed to repair it. The experience was a nightmare: • They also changed their story when I got the finance company involved. claiming the head was "faulty from the start."
After 3 weeks while the car sat doing nothing, I asked for a courtesy car because I wanted to support them all the way rather than working against them. The courtesy car they provided was not road worthy with a non-functioning headlight and sidelight—a police officer pulled me over and told me to get it fixed urgently. I emailed them about the issue and it fell on deaf ears and I got no response. The A/C on the 2010 Honda Jazz also didn’t work, which I asked to exchange the car for another one.
The problem with the car was clearly caused by their because putting the new head on the car they cut corners by not replacing the timing chain and tensioner. 1500 miles later the chain jump a cog and sent the timing out bending two valves.
Still trying to work with them while they didn’t replace it or fix the Honda’s lights. They eventually replaced the valves on the Mini and put the head back on, only for it to start leaking water. This meant that the cylinder head needed to be removed again and be sent away to be skimmed.
I gave them a final ultimatum to give me a legal courtesy car or I would reject the vehicle which I was legally able to do.
In the end, after losing total confidence in their ability to help me, I handed the car back. They provided only a partial refund and even deducted an extortionate admin fee.
DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY WITH YOUR MONEY. I strongly advise against it

We're sorry that things ended this way, but we do want to clarify a few important points for anyone reading.
First, the car in question was sold with a brand-new cylinder head, which you were made aware of at the time and was a major preventative repair that cost us over £1,500 (on a £3,500 car).
There were no signs at the time to suggest a timing chain issue, and the vehicle covered significant mileage before your fault developed. When the car was returned to us, we diagnosed the issue and began work, including replacing valves and removing the head again for testing.
We provided you with a courtesy car during this period, entirely free of charge. Although we accept this repair took longer than ideal due to workshop volume and parts supply delays, we remained in contact and shared video updates throughout.
When you later decided to reject the vehicle, we accepted this without resistance.
The refund was processed in line with your finance company’s instructions and included a mileage deduction that was calculated by the lender, not by us.
We genuinely regret that we couldn’t reach a better outcome together, but we’ve acted throughout with transparency and in line with both the law and industry standards.

Poor workmanship left my car in an un roadworthy condition.
I had my car serviced and given an Mot at Horsepower Tonbridge. The car failed the Mot due to the two front suspension arms requiring replacement and were duly replaced by the garage. A week later whilst on holiday a loud knocking noise from the front of the car developed. I took the car into a local garage who advised me that the bolts on the nearside front suspension arm were loose where they had not been securely tightened and that there was an oil leak from the sump where the garage that serviced the car had not sealed the bolt to the sump properly.
I took the car back to Horsepower but had to wait day for the leaking sump to be fixed. What should have been 30 minute job took over 2 hours as a new sump plug had not been sourced prior to my second visit.
On my first visit the garage refunded me the bill I had to pay on holiday. I asked for a goodwill payment as my wife and I had been grounded for a day and a morning awaiting my un road worthy car to be put right. I was offered a free Mot the following year which I grudgingly accepted. However after being messed around with the repair to the leaking sump I once again requested some compensation for the disruption to my holiday and the time spent having the work done only to be ignored and left feeling that rather than me being inconvenienced it was me inconveniencing the garage.
I have written two letters to their CEO at different addresses without a reply.
Their HO Email address on the web appears to be invalid.
They are fine when things go right but due to this experience I will not be using the again or recommending their services.

As you’ve mentioned, we replaced both suspension arms during your visit, and when you reported a concern the following week, we took your feedback seriously. We covered your holiday garage bill without hesitation and offered a free MOT as goodwill, which you accepted at the time.
Regarding the sump plug, we acknowledge the delay during your return visit and apologise again for the inconvenience caused. However, the vehicle was inspected, made safe and fully roadworthy, and all follow-up work was completed without charge.
We did reply to your initial letter in person at the time of your visits, and we're sorry to hear you've since struggled to reach us via post. Our contact details are up to date on our website, and we’re happy to speak further if needed.

This is now your second 1-star review in a week and the first time you’ve mentioned anything about a “turbo booster leak”, which (let’s be honest) sounds more like something from a SpaceX launch than a 160,000-mile Ford Galaxy.
To recap: you bought the car back in April for just over £3,000. Since then, we’ve already:
Replaced the front wheel bearing
Fitted a brand new ABS sensor
Road tested the car thoroughly
Found no turbo-related fault codes or warnings at any stage
When we last saw the car in early June, you’d already driven over 4,000 miles and we’ve had no contact since. The timing of this second review (just after we replied factually to your first one) feels less about unresolved issues and more about not liking the response.
We're still willing to help, but new issues now need to be logged with your warranty provider, and we’ll need a claim number before booking it back in. That’s always been the process, and it’s fair for everyone.

Absolutely Avoid
Absolutely Avoid – Dishonest, Chaotic, and Utterly Unprofessional
My experience with Horsepower Motor Centre has been so appalling that I was eventually forced to involve my bank and the Police Fraud team in order to recover funds owed to me. What began as a routine car purchase quickly descended into a months-long ordeal marked by dishonesty, silence, and shocking levels of incompetence.
I purchased a Mercedes E-Class (Reg: WK14TFV), only to return it almost immediately due to serious and dangerous mechanical faults. Upon collection, the car — which had just passed an MOT conducted by their partner garage on the very same day — displayed multiple alarming issues, including:
• The engine management light coming on within hours
• Severe juddering under acceleration
• Complete loss of power while driving
• Worn brake discs that require replacement
Despite these obvious safety concerns, the car was sold to me as roadworthy — something I now view with deep suspicion, given the timing and source of the MOT.
I returned the car in good faith for repairs, but it sat untouched for over two and a half weeks, with no communication from the dealership unless I repeatedly chased them. One staff member even admitted via message that the place was in “utter chaos” — a rare and brutally honest reflection of the situation.
In place of the Mercedes, I was offered a 2004 Honda Civic as a so-called courtesy car. It was in appalling condition, made horrific grinding noises from the brake callipers, and even contained used cigarettes under the seat — presumably left behind by the last unfortunate customer they loaned it to. It was neither roadworthy nor acceptable.
Despite eventually agreeing to a refund, I was forced to wait nearly two months to receive only a partial repayment, with no explanation whatsoever for the missing amount. This is despite returning the car with half a tank of diesel, and the fact that they are still holding both sets of keys and the V5C. My formal complaint was completely ignored, and no apology or accountability was ever offered.
This experience has left me significantly out of pocket, without a vehicle, and with major disruption to my business and well-being. That I had to resort to formal intervention from my bank and the Police Fraud team speaks volumes about how seriously Horsepower Motor Centre mishandled this situation.
If you’re considering buying from Horsepower Motor Centre — don’t. Based on my experience, this is a company that is dishonest, disorganised, and completely unfit to be trading in vehicles. I wouldn’t trust them with a bicycle, let alone your hard-earned money.

You purchased a used Mercedes E-Class from us earlier this year which developed a fault shortly after collection, totally agreed, that’s always frustrating and we do understand. Unfortunately, these things can happen with secondhand vehicles, especially older, higher-mileage ones. What matters is how it’s handled, and in this case, we acted entirely in good faith: the car was returned to us, booked into our busy workshop, and repairs were already underway by the time you came in for your refund, something you saw with your own eyes.
We were literally hours away from resolving the issue for you, but you opted to cancel, which we respected and accepted. A refund was issued. We never ignored your messages or refused to help, we just had to balance your case alongside dozens of others in the workshop at the time.
The courtesy car provided, a Honda Civic automatic we’ve owned since nearly the day our business began over 20 years ago, actually holds a bit of sentimental value. It’s served us well as a loan car for years. It might not be glamorous, but it’s safe, reliable, and will get you to Timbuktu and back.
Since then, the original vehicle has been repaired and sold again. The new owner is very happy, and it hasn’t come back. It was just a niggle, not a write-off, and we dealt with it.
