I chose Montpellier Legal because of the overwhelmingly positive reviews and agreed to pay a premium so I'd have no issues. This was a chain-free new build purchase in a 250-flat tower, with no issues with funds and mortgage. It should have been fast and smooth.

My case was assigned to a team that isn't even an option on their phone menu at their office. One of the phone numbers used by the team appears on Google linked to a different type of business.

I got no proactive updates and no clear next steps since start, and the app has been useless and seldom updated. Most emails and calls went unanswered until I started complaining. They were unwilling, and IMO also uncapable to give estimated dates for any milestone. We lost weeks on a simple ID certification at the start. Then, at some point I figured my solicitor went on holiday, someone else stepped in and we missed the exchange deadline.

When I asked for basic communication, the paralegal and new solicitor assigned to the case were defensive. They said they received documents from the vendor’s solicitors after exchange deadline - of course, this is because they requested the documents late themselves, then said the new builds take time - which they knew from day one, and finally brought up the new solicitor had to do double work because mine went on vacation. That is not something a premium-paying client should ever hear.

Then I got the pack and their report. The first document I opened described the property as freehold, which can’t be. If they got this wrong, then what else? The report was not only useless but triggered a lot of useless discussions with the vendor because they flagged irrelevant issues that I still had to investigate. All across the document, the theme was “there may or may not be an issue with [add random thing like bamboo infestation], read all documents we collected and get advice from someone else”. It also looked like a copy-pasted document from a different type of purchase.

The team at Montpellier couldn't explain basic things e.g., why the lease was a draft or answer my questions on process or any content. I ended up reading all the source documents myself, and the sales agent and vendor helped more than my own solicitors did. I ended up having to rely on them a lot, with all risks coming from conflict of interest.

My complaint to the original solicitor at Montpellier I was assigned to, changed nothing.

I'm now apologising daily to all parties involved for choosing this firm. I'll paying a premium for a service that I’m pretty sure, a firm with the very worst reviews could hardly have done worse than.

We were supposed to exchange today. The sales agent is chasing my solicitors. Silence. I call and it turns out the latest solicitor who was on the case is on annual leave.

We have completion in 2 weeks and did not even exchange yet. It’s unclear if and when I’ll see the end of this process and - most importantly - what will be long term consequences of lack of meaningful advice.

Maybe you want to read with a bit of skepticism all these stellar reviews, which now sound very suspicious to me.

UPDATE: They have since tried to get this review removed.

I was asked for written approval for going forward with exchange without OS2 searches, I provided this approval. Then, after a few days another solicitor told me it’s actually not possible. They won’t tell me when they requested the search and did not expedite until it was already too late.

I also read emails they sent to the sales agent without me in cc. In one, they claimed they asked me for scanned copies of the documents to sign. They never did. They implied the delay was on me for not sending those scans ahead of the paper copies by post.

Meanwhile, more documents are still missing for the exchange, and completion is due next week.
