A Transformative, Thoughtfully Curated Learning Community

As a parent navigating the homeschooling landscape, I understand how deeply personal and intentional these decisions are. That’s exactly why I feel compelled to share what Recess has truly offered our family.

Reducing it to a vague, low rating (like someone who gave it 2 stars) doesn’t reflect the reality many of us have experienced.

Recess is not just a platform. It’s a living, breathing learning community. The guides are not generic instructors; they are passionate experts who bring depth, curiosity, and real-world experience into every interaction. The classes are curated with a level of thoughtfulness that is incredibly difficult to find elsewhere. This isn’t recycled curriculum, it’s dynamic, engaging, and often interdisciplinary in ways that spark genuine interest in kids.

What stands out most is the intentional cultivation of leadership and voice. Children aren’t just passive participants; they are encouraged to think critically, collaborate, and grow into confident individuals. That kind of environment doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built by educators who care deeply about what they’re doing.

Now, let’s address the nuance: like any community space—especially one that involves online interaction—there can be moments that resemble traditional social environments. That’s not unique to Recess; it’s a reality of any group where humans connect. The difference is that the Recess team actively acknowledges this and provides thoughtful scaffolding. They guide, moderate, and adapt in ways that show both awareness and responsibility.

But here’s the part that cannot be overlooked: no platform replaces the role of a parent. Whether it’s Recess, homeschooling independently, or any educational setting, parents still need to stay engaged, set boundaries, and guide their child’s experience. Expecting a completely frictionless environment without parental involvement isn’t realistic anywhere.

What I feel most is gratitude. Gratitude for the guides who show up with passion, for the rare and meaningful classes my child wouldn’t have access to otherwise, and for a community that, while not perfect, is deeply intentional and constantly evolving.

Recess didn’t replicate the traditional system for us. It expanded what learning could look like. And that’s why, for our family, it’s absolutely a 5-star experience.

Personal Review

We chose to homeschool based on our own experiences and what we felt would best support our children’s growth. While Recess had strong potential and initially felt like a good fit, over time it began to reflect many of the same challenges we were intentionally trying to leave behind in the school system. We found that it no longer aligned with the overall environment we envisioned for our family. After thoughtful consideration, we feel confident that continuing our homeschooling journey independently is the right decision for us.

Real Community & Support

Recess is a rare find in the sea of online homeschool options….I’ve spent the last 6 years going through trial and error of hundreds of curriculum options, apps, and online classes. So many of them promised to be great, but ended up as a huge disappointment (and waste of money). Recess is not one of those programs.

Support: From day 1, you and your child will be paired up with a direct contact to communicate with anytime you need. Response is quick, you are speaking directly to this person, not a bot or customer service line. Your child will also be immediately welcomed into a community of peers, some of which are specifically designated to help new friends acclimate to the Recess culture, and find their way around within the virtual area. (They have avatars that can “walk” from space to space, but also communicate via video and microphone once they join an activity or class).

Real Life Skills: Your child will soon find that this is a space where their ideas are respected and celebrated…it’s not adults making all of the choices! The kids are encouraged to offer input on how the entire community is run, what class topics they’d like to see, how the apps themselves look etc. Each student has their own unique set of skills and interests, which is valued to allow them to truly be a part of the big picture. They will build apps, games, publish stories, create YouTube channels, run book clubs, science experiments, have Socratic discussions, learn to engineer rockets, learn systems operation, public speaking, podcasting, art….the list goes on. But it goes beyond just learning things in a classroom. The real magic is when they begin to build smaller communities within the larger Recess community to collaborate on projects, or get feedback from other peer groups. It’s “real life” application.

Guides: The adults in the Recess space are called guides. They all are chosen to be top notch. So the instruction here is exceptional (if you’ve been on other platforms, you might understand why this matters so much!) They really interact and engage with students, and they teach the content from personal experience. Some of them are top YouTubers, published authors, or involved in actual space programs. You are not getting instructors reading straight from a website, with no clue what they are even teaching. These instructors are passionate about the topic they’ve been chosen to lead.

Real friendships: The kids develop real friendships at Recess. They are able to socialize whenever they want through the safe, secure (moderated) platform. There are also beginning to be in-person meetups for groups that decide to coordinate in various locations. They stay engaged after classes by completing challenges and competitions that match their interests.

Parent groups: There is also a growing parent community where you can join weekly activities yourself. To just chat, play games, get to know the community.

Recess is a valuable resource for any homeschoolers looking for online community combined with academic instruction. In the past 2 years, I’ve watched my son go from a shy, unsure kid to an excited, confident teen with so many new interests, he runs out of time

Magical. Self-directed kids in action :)

Since the COVID epidemic, which shut down regular schools, there has been a boom in online educational programs for children. A parent who wants to support their child’s development in this way can now choose from many different options. But Recess isn’t just “another online program.” It’s a newly developing platform built on a well-thought-out, cohesive educational philosophy. What I appreciate most:

1. Excellent guides. Our son has been using Recess intensively for more than a year now and has completed dozens of courses. We’ve never encountered a guide who wasn’t a good fit. They know how to spark kids’ enthusiasm, engage them, they are patient, and their offerings are interesting. They bring a personal approach.

2. Human relationships and atmosphere. Recess is building something like a “school” where people know each other, help each other, collaborate, and have fun. Because Homo sapiens learns best when feeling safe and accepted. :)

3. Different levels of participation. Some kids attend just one activity. Some activities are free and children join when they feel like it. Other kids are deeply involved, even receiving individual coaching.

4. Self-direction and zero pressure on children. It’s entirely up to them what they want to engage with. It’s not “school” in the usual sense of the word.

5. And most important of all — the magic I haven’t seen anywhere else: somehow, Recess manages to foster a sense of agency in children. They dive into their own projects, eager to explore and create. Some kids are producing a real podcast. Another has been running their own book club for half a year. Kids write stories, code videogames, make art… some even organize their own events for other children! Once a month, parents are invited to join and see what everyone has been working on. Watching your child confidently present their work is one of the most rewarding experiences imaginable. :)

I’m deeply grateful that Recess exists. I wish every child could have access to such an environment.

The Absolute Best in Online Education

Recess isn’t just another online learning platform—it’s a community where curious kids thrive. Thanks to Recess, our son has found his tribe and is learning from the most innovative and enthusiastic educators. Whether building rockets with Tom, exploring evolution with Tobias, or writing a book with Brianne, he’s constantly challenged and inspired by incredible guides and bright, like-minded friends. His cohorts—including Quest, CoLab, Mindustry, Factorio, Satisfactory, and collaborative math with Addison—have felt less like a class and more like an adventure. We can’t wait to see what they offer next!

Recess is a standout in the world of…

Recess is a standout in the world of online homeschool programs. I have two kids enrolled, and what I find most impressive is how each of them is able to find unique value in their experience. They have very different personalities and interests, yet Recess meets them both where they are.

Each of my kids uses Recess to explore their passions in new and exciting ways. Whether they're diving into a personal project or trying something completely unfamiliar, they’re consistently supported—not just by their guides, but by a community of peers who genuinely care. That kind of encouragement has made a real impact on their confidence and curiosity.

As a parent, I deeply appreciate how committed the entire Recess team is to creating something special. It’s clear that the founders and guides are genuinely motivated to give kids an awesome experience. The platform continues to evolve, and there's a strong, ongoing effort to foster an inclusive, engaged community. Recess isn’t just a program—it’s a place where kids are truly seen and supported.

Recess is a game changer

My son Matthew has been in Recess almost since the beginning. It's made a huge difference in our homeschooling experience both academically and socially. He has formed a great community of peers and academic advisors. He has been exposed to many new ideas and gotten an opportunity to really learn more deeply about his interests. I highly recommend it!

Recess Levelled up our Homeschool Life

It's been almost 2 Years with Recess and our homeschool life has never been better. Community has always been difficult to find, Recess provided this in all aspects.

My kids have shown growth in ways that I couldn't have imagined. Not only have they found their best friends at Recess, their learning journey has been thriving and growing and I have to say there is never a dull moment when you have Recess in your life.

My son went from block coding to now trouble shooting and reading JavaScript and other coding languages where he developed his dream games, made websites and apps. He went from struggling in math to now learning Trigonometry and Calculus in his Advanced Physics.

My daughter went from being shy and timid and having anxiety when learning to now leading a Book Club with her best friend at Recess. She's undergoing a mentorship where she is writing her own novel and also running a Podcast called 'The Recess Rundown' with another friend she met at Recess.

Kids are able to connect with one another no matter what class they are taking, inspire each other, influence one another and as parents we just watch the magic happen! If you are looking for a space for your child to thrive - Recess is that place and our family has never looked back. I am grateful to all the Recess staff and guides - they really take the extra mile and get to know each and every kid in the community. Every kid matters at Recess and Every kid is seen.

My homeschoolers have a thriving social…

My homeschoolers have a thriving social life due to the courses and social events available on this site. Not only is there a diverse selection of courses to sign up for, but a well-built chat/room feature allows them to connect with other kids with similar interests they have met in classes or the community hour. Our experience with other online learning sites was that kids weren't easily able to take their relationships outside of the set meeting times in a safe environment, but Recess has solved this problem.
The teachers are passionate and knowledgeable about their subjects and encourage kids to ask questions and really dig into what they are working on. Kids also share and present projects to the community which helps keep them motivated to jump in and try new things.
