ve had 18 years experience of…DREADFUL COMPOST

I have had 18 years experience of allotmenteering, and have used peat free multipurpose compost of different manufacture for the last 6 years. This year our allotment shop is selling Rocketgro.
It is absolutely APPALLING!
Sets like a rock in 24hrs. Very low or zero germination of seeds.
To be fair, Rocketgro did reply rapidly to my queries and photographic evidence. Their comment was that it says on the back of the bag that they do not recommend it for seed sowing.
It should be clearly stated on all their advertising that 'multipurpose' does not mean what it says, and that it fails with seeds.
I have bought 2 bags of other manufacturers peat free multipurpose, and within 4 days, seedlings have emerged.
This has cost me £50 in purchase of Rocket gro and lost seeds.

Dear Nigel.
This is incredibly unfair.

Having just spent the day with River Cottage who produce 100% of their salads, beans, squash, fennel, tomatoes, all in RocketGro compost, and seen the bounty in their gardens and poly tunnels, i feel you have not followed the advice on our bags.
'Start seeds in Seed & Cutting compost then transfer to our Multi-Purpose for better results.'
This is the way forward. This is Peat-Free Compost. This is Multi-Purpose NOT All Purpose.
River Cottage are now on their 3rd sowing of the season in the same RocketGro seed compost and still achieving 100% germination rates. Still providing the nutrients needed. And 'excellent drainage'.
They then transfer into beds containing RocketGro compost for the growing phase pre harvest. It works. Its brilliant.
The rows and rows of dozens of varieties i saw was incredible. Great head gardener. Great compost.

Watering Peat-Free is not like watering Peat. We have just had a 28 degree sun day. It dries out on top. This is not a problem when the compost a few inches down is damp. But if you want to then sow seeds into a dried out top layer, of course it is not going to be straightforward or effective.

I am sorry you felt the need to publicly vent.
I am sorry you didn't go with our Seed Compost to start your seeds in.
I am sorry your watering regime has not worked.
Best wishes

Some Success and Some Failure

The production of Rocket Grow meets a lot of key things for me such as peat free, sustainable and chemical free (John Innes has chemicals in it though doesn't it?). My experience with using the "Stage 2/3 Multipurpose Compost" has not been consistent. My tomato seedlings, when potted on from a seed compost, have done well. They were 3 to 4 inches in height when re-potted and have continued to prosper. However, my cucumber and courgette seedlings have not survived being potted on into the Stage 2/3 mix. They lost vigor and have all but perished now. I have started germination again with fresh seed in a seed compost but I am now wary of using Stage 2/3 to pot them on. The first time round they had only just got past their cotyledon stage leaves so I may try bringing them on longer in the seed compost. Maybe the Stage 2/3 is a bit too much of a shock for very young seedlings? I will try the Rocket Grow Stage 1, Seed and Cutting Compost and follow on with the Stage 2/3 to see if this helps seedlings survive. Some advice on the web site about when to pot on would help.

The Stage 2/3 mix does need a different approach to watering as I found a dry, crusty top layer formed whilst deeper in the pot the compost was still very wet so the danger of over-watering is there if you do not check carefully.

Rocket Grow seems to be a different beast to many composts. I will persevere with it to see if I can master its use.

Excellent product, excellent ethos

Have been using, and spreading the word about Rocket Gro products, for several years now.

Excellent product, environmentally sound, achieving superb results: healthy plants in very healthy soil.

Have most recently had 100% seed germination with seed and cutting compost in readiness for two new raised beds full of rocket gro medium.

Excellent customer service.

Dreadful compost

Dreadful compost. Tried last year with poor results but thought I'd give it another go. Plants die, wilt or fail to thrive. Nowhere near the performance I used to get with my old compost, been using peat free for a least a decade. Expect garden centres get this cheap hence why so many now stock it

Magic Mulch by name and Magic Mulch by nature!

I used Magic Mulch in my garden and found it does exactly what it says on the website. Not only does it work well to suppress weeds, repel slugs, reduce the need for watering and add nutrients but it looks good too. As well as using it all over the garden I used it as a top dressing this autumn on the pots I planted with spring bulbs and had no problem with squirrels digging up the pots to eat the bulbs. The bulbs are all coming through now and look very healthy.
I was so impressed with Magic Mulch I recommended its use in a large garden where I work as a volunteer and other volunteers have commented that the amount of weeding is significantly less and the beds look great when they have been mulched. It is also easy to spread and as you only need to add a thin layer, it goes a long way.
I have also used the Peat Free Multi Purpose Compost with added John Innes and been very pleased with the results. I have read some of the negative comments and think some people do not realise that peat free composts generally are more difficult to work with and you have to be far more careful regarding watering and feeding. This applies to ALL peat free composts. I have been very impressed with the quality of all the Rocketgro products I have used to date.

In recently purchased rocket grow multi purpose compost because my usual brand was out of stock. I expected a quality product by the description and the fact it seemed to be organic.

I was very disappointed in the compost. I found it lumpy, with large bits in and hard. It also appeared to form a white film on the surface. At first I thought I had inadvertently overwatered the compost, but on checking it found the compost to be bone dry, quite hard and crusty on the surface.

It dries out quickly and doesn’t change colour when it dries, making it hard to detect. I will not buy it again I thought it was very poor quality.

Dear Carol
Thank you for your feedback.

Our composts are all Soil Association Approved Organic. Yes.
Our compost are all extremely high quality, so your expectations were correct.

We do not have 'large bits' in our composts because we sieve/trommel them all down to a grade no bigger than 4 or 5 mm. This is an expensive and time consuming process for us but it ensures customers always have lump/big bit free compost when they buy a RocketGro product.

Watering Peat-Free Compost does take some adjustment. Little and often is best. Using the putting a finger into the compost trick will tell a gardener if the compost is damp or not. The surface can dry out as you say, which doesn't reflect the true water retentive nature of the contents of a pot of good Peat-Free compost.

As to a white film on the surface, this will be the result of the Organic nature of the compost, the fact that all our compost is un-sterilised, microbe rich, and synthetic chemical free. The white film (if something like this does appear in a Peat-Free compost) is amazing biology at work and demonstrates a thriving micro environment of incredible life that your plants will thrive in and interact with.

Our products are at the top of the quality curve within the growing media industry.
They are not Peat. Never have been. Never will be. Peat-Free behaves very differently to Peat and needs to be treated differently when growing.

We are sorry our amazing product was not to your liking. Gardening is very personal though, so we totally respect your choices. Best wishes. RocketGro

Amazing peat-free compost!

We used a mixture of Beds & Borders and Container & Basket compost in our raised beds and pots, and it has worked wonders! Our anemones look fantastic, and our cosmos are still going strong in late October.

We ordered a pallet online, which was neatly delivered to our front door. Excellent customer service, and the website was easy to use.

Amazing peat-free compost! Environmentally friendly too. I highly recommend it and will be buying again.

The best peat-free products by far

We've tried several company's peat-free products but Rocketgro is by far the best. The consistency and texture are excellent and we've now switched to buy their Peat-free multi-purpose compost and Peat-free mulch. Our tomatoes did brilliantly this summer and the mulch is great for beds.
The closed-circle sustainability of how Rocketgro is produced makes you believe there are still good guys in the world.

Rocket grow experience is a failure

I bought 18 Rocket Grow, Grow bags for the first time. The experience has been shockingly poor. I've used grow bags for years for tomatoes + cucumbers + always have good results/ healthy plants + plentiful crops. However, this year with Rocket Grow, the plants growth is stunted, the leaves are yellow+ purple + the fruit has not set. The few tomatoes that have been produced are thick skinned + tiny. The Cucumber foliage is sparse + yellow. The Cucumber fruit are failing to set.
Never again will I buy Rocket Grow products. I naively thought that by buying a more expensive product, it would be better.
I have also noticed a lot of gnats emerging .
I have tried to contact Rocket Grow Customer Service by phone + email, but no response to either.

Impossible to get the watering right

I was very disappointed when my local garden centre (Sunshine) stopped stocking peat-free Sylvagrow, which I had been using successfully for some years. They recommended Rocketgro instead but I will never buy it for my containers again. It seems impossible to get the watering right. It very quickly dries to a crisp at the top, but is it moist enough underneath? Or actually soggy? How can I tell unless I dig down a bit every time I water? Who wants to do that? The advice from Rocketgro seems to be to water little and often (against all standard gardening advice) and/or to add a layer of something else on top (to counter the failings of their own product)! Please, Sunshine, bring back Sylvagrow. [I should add that I have been using Rocketgro for several months now, although I gave my review the date that I finally decided to give up on this compost.] Update 3rd April 2025: I contacted Gardening Which? about this compost as I was surprised to see that it wasn't listed anywhere in their 2025 compost report. They replied to say that they had tested it the previous year and found results very similar to mine - i.e. bone dry on top of the container, a soggy mess at the bottom. It should definitely be listed as a Don't Buy this year, as it was in 2024. I have used different peat-free composts recommended by Gardening Which? for years and have always had good results.

Thank you Julia for repeatedly attacking RocketGro.
As it so happens Which published trial data about our Container & Basket Compost product that was packed in 2022, and trialled by them in Spring 2023, and that report was published in Spring 2024.
We stopped producing that product in that form in January 2023 when we realised it needed to be better.
Which published data on a product that was not longer on sale post them contacting us in August 2023 to ask us if the product was still on sale. We told them it was not. They should therefore never have gone to print with that article in 2024 Spring.
This is against their own journalistic guidelines.
We are hugely up on sales of our compost this year in Sunshine Garden Centre over last year as their customers come back for more of the good stuff.

This is probably the worst compost we…

This is probably the worst compost we have ever used. It’s a shame as we prefer to use something peat free and organic and opted for Rocketgro because it is also fairly local to us. The seedling compost wasn’t too bad but the stage 2&3 with added John innes either killed everything or stuff just hasn’t grown and gone yellow. Luckily I repotted some things into a different compost but left some in the Rocketgro and the difference is incredible. Tomatoes that we planted into the stage 2&3 haven’t grown at all, they have remained a couple of inches tall and gone yellow. I also had problems with drainage and found the soil too heavy and despite mixing in some perlite the pots struggled to dry out and the roots wouldn’t develop. I’m not sure if the soil is too hot or has something toxic in it but I would have been better off using soil from my garden in the pots to grow our vegetables this season. I won’t be buying this again.

Awful multi purpose compost.

Awful multi purpose compost.
In March this year I purchased 15 bags of this compost and was so pleased.
Since then I have struggled with gnats and nothing growing healthy. I have tried everything that I can think of and written to the company but then looked at these reviews. What a shock and I am not alone.
What a waste of time and money and after reading some of the company replies I don't expect anything helpful.
I most certainly won't be purchasing again or recommending.

This company offers great products but…

You are coming up with just empty excuses. My free gift came in a plastic bag and leaked all over and smelled like cow's poo. I thought it was a joke and somebody sent me a manure poo bomb, which exploded in a transport as it is was disgusting....."weird organic plant feed". I will be surprised if you are operational in 5 years time with this attitude. All of the boxes received delivered by the same driver different days were packed poorly , all of them were OPENED!!! and just damaged. Have you ever ordered products from yourselves online and tested delivery service? It is just awfully executed and you are deluded. This company offers great products but the whole shopping experience is a let down. From Rocketgro ignorant customer service to Parcel Force forever delivery. Whoever created this company, please try to order your own goods and have them delivered to you incognito ( so nobody knows it is for you ) you will exactly understand what I mean. Express 24 delivery service carries on for 7 days and still leaves you annoyed as they are delivering one item per box, the boxes are not together. So how environmental friendly is Rocketgro to let Parcel force make 2 journeys on different days to me with the same order I placed 7 days ago instead of 1 journey?! They brought it in a big diesel van. Organic company polluting the uk. Shocking. Rocketgro and Parcel force are excusing this service saying that is acceptable. I disagree. I DO NOT recommend online shopping to anyone from this company and their delivery experience by Parcel force.....it is just awful. Nothing works in the Uk like it should. I do not wish for this customer service. It is BAD. People just do not care and the customer is not important. I do not know what ethos is at the centre of this company. It is not a customer. I called you regarding my delivery no answer, I left the message on the answer phone , I was ignored. Shame on you. Yeo valley company recommended me to you. Well, sorry I love Yeo valley products but Rocketgro can not deliver good customer service. Never again. You have very low standards of the customer care. I would say no existent. English is my second language, so you can correct any mistakes...but hopefully you got the message. Have I made myself clear? How many foreign languages can you write?

Dear Customer

I am sad to read your review and feedback. Sad that you are upset with our company and sad that you are upset with the United Kingdom.

I will go through your points and cover it all off.

1stly you ordered from us early morning on 2nd July. The 1st parcel landed with you early morning on 8th July. 6 days.
The 2nd parcel landed with you this morning. 7 days.

Not 8 days as you say.

We are not Amazon prime. We offer delivery terms on our website as follows:

'For all regular orders, we will do our best to get your order to you asap, and usually between 2 & 3 workings days. We use Parcel Force and DPD as our preferred delivery companies, and we work with them using their express 24 & 48 hour delivery service. When we are super busy the delivery time may become 4-5 working days.'

The 1st parcel landed with you at 5 working days. The second at 6 working days.

-We apologise for parcel force not allowing us to put all the products in 1 box. They won't allow us to put in more than 30KG in 1 box because they value the health and welfare of their workers.

-We apologise that the parcel force network sometimes separates the parcels out on their huge network as parcels do separate when put onto vans, lorries and conveyor belts. We are sorry their network is so huge and not perfect.

-We apologies for the fact that your parcels took 1 day longer to deliver than the maximum we state on your website.

-We apologise for the fact that Parcel Force under freak circumstances could not collect from us due to very sad circumstances as follows at our stretch of the motorway (we are based near to the M5):

Friday 28th June. 8 hour M5 closure as a lorry crashed into a bridge.
Monday 1st July. 7 hour M5 closure as a person tried to commit suicide off a bridge.
Thursday 4th July. 8 hour M5 closure as the same person sadly tried again, and this led to 3 car crashes in the same stretch M5 closed for most of the day.

We are very sorry we are not good enough for you and we are very sorry the United Kingdom is also such a disappointment to you.

We are pleased your parcels all arrived with you yesterday and today, only 1 day later than our maximum time lines despite the extreme tragic circumstances detailed above.

I am very proud of our company. I am not ignorant. We care.

With best wishes for sunnier times ahead.

Waste of money

I bought 8 of these from a local garden centre. They were fairly solid so rolled the bags a number of times and after cutting the openings there was still a lot of breaking up to do prior to planting. The tomato plants have been very slow to grow, but the plants in two bags have all wilted and died, eventhough they have been watered every evening and fed weekly. It looks like I'll receive a very late and very small crop of tomatoes this year and definitely wont waste my money on these again. I'm not even sure that I'll be adding the material to my compost when the season is over. Im also providing feedback to my local garden centre to ensure that they are aware of feedback and don't stock this product again.

Is this the worst compost on the…

Is this the worst compost on the market? I think so and reading the reviews, so do many others. I usually get Tomorite growbags and needed eight when I bought in May but the garden centre only had six and recommended your bags as a suitable alternative. Well, what a shock I had when my tomatoes started to grow away in the Tomorite bags but hardly grew at all in rocketgro. In fact they became pale green and struggled to make any serious height. They are still very poor even now. I am very annoyed that six of my tomato plants in these bags will produce very little this season - what a waste of time. Had I realised that they were digestate based I would have avoided them like the plague. Someone once gave me a bag of digestate-based 'compost' and it was beyond awful. I emailed the company two weeks ago but response came there none. I have looked at postings of the product on Instagram and the reviews are in the main, very negative and critical of the product. I offered to send pictures over too but they probably know that their stuff is absolute rubbish and all they can do is send out patronising responses. I have been growing tomatoes for over 50 years and have never seen such rubbish as this. They ought to be taken to Trading Standards for selling a product unfit for purpose. I urge everyone who has had a bad experienced of this dire product to get the message out there and warn other gardeners to avoid, avoid, avoid.
