Unprofessional
Absolutely disgusted with this company who also trade as sellr.com (the part of their business they'd rather you bought into).
Logged on to renew my cart and found the price had risen from £400 to £1500 plus VAT for the exact same service.
No advance warning was given.
Their renewal page makes the following statements - I'll deal with them in piece by piece.
"Important RomanCart Pricing Information
Firstly, thanks for using RomanCart! We really appreciate your business and support!"
- That's debatable. read on.....
"As you will know, we have not changed our prices for many years, this has resulted in us trading at a fraction of the price of our competitors. During this time we have absorbed the inevitable increases in costs that running a system like RomanCart has incurred."
- Few, if any changes have been made to the cart system in years. Your margins are completely within your own control. Are you financially illiterate?
"While we recognise that the increase in price is significant, we hope that you will appreciate that for many years we have carried the burden of ever increasing costs and reducing margins and that at some point we would have to catch up to make the business sustainable. And additionally, that while it is a significant rise the new pricing for RomanCart is not high when compared with competitors"
- If their website is to be believed, they have 59,000 active Romancart shopping cart customers, although, they have just about the most inactive support forum I've ever seen with 11 topics posted in a whole year which have attracted 29 posts (including multiple posts from the same users). Acquiring several thousand new subscribers per year would surely mitigate increased networking costs? I mean, they wouldn't be including the functionless free versions in those numbers would they?
"Significantly, since early 2020 our systems have all been running on Amazon AWS which has resulted in greater reliability (100% uptime this year) than our previous setup, although at a far greater cost to ourselves (upgraded server costs have increased by 800% in the last 3 years and additional staff now work on the underlying infrastusture)."
- I think they mean infrastructure. Look, investing in making sure your product doesn't break is part and parcel of running a service. If such massive (?) costs were incurred during the last three years, would it not have made any sense at all to charge for them? Even my 6 year old nephew can work an abacus.
"In addition to the prices increasing, there is now a minimum upgrade level depending on your average turnover through the cart, so you may be required to upgrade to a higher level than you are currently subscribed."
- I repeat, no value has been added for a very long time. It's essentially the same product that was marketed 10 years ago.
"As a thank you for your support - any upgrades or renewals taking place in the next 30 days will receive 15 months for the price of 12. That's 3 months RomanCart subscription for free. (If you have other RomanCart accounts please consider renewing those as well to take advantage of this offer whilst it is available)."
- This isn't new.
"Once again, thank you for using RomanCart and we hope to assist you with your online success for many years to come."
- Romancart's new price structure is designed to rid themselves of the burden of running this part of their business in my opinion. They have been promoting and maintaining their alternative, Sellr, for many years - however, the simplicity and customisability of Romancart is (was) again, in my opinion, the better option.
"Please click on the X on this popup to see the upgrades and pricing now available to you on this cart."
- This is how the ridiculous price increases were announced. I've been a customer for 17 years.
EDIT - Since posting this I have revisited the Romancart support forums.
Customer complaints have been erased, but can of course be viewed on Wayback Machine.
I find that I'm only permitted to download a fraction of my customer data - just names and email addresses.
As a workaround, you can access two year's worth of complete data/sales records by exporting your sales a month at a time. I'm informed by another user that once your subscription's up, none of your data is made available.
Setting up a new integration with Ecwid has been time consuming and a steep learning curve. Ecwid's stock control functionality is inferior to Romancart's. In other respects though, Ecwid's offering is far superior to Romancart. The nearest equivalent to Romancart 'professional' is Ecwid's 'business' plan at £39 per month with unlimited turnover.
Ecwid's system is far more versatile than Romancart - my online presence is now greatly enhanced.
Shame you can't erase the complaints on here too.
