Exceptional hospitality, beautiful rooms and an unforgettable stay!
From start to finish, Royal Blue exceeded our expectations. The staff, rooms and hospitality made our birthday trip to Montenegro unforgettable.
Before arriving, I emailed about check-in, the shuttle and accessibility. Within 30 minutes, I had all the information I needed. At Tivat Airport I called via WhatsApp to request the free shuttle. A minivan arrived within 30 minutes, driven by a lovely man who helped with our luggage. I'd advise booking it before you fly though rather than leaving it as late as I did!
We arrived an hour before check-in, but the room was already prepared and the staff kindly let us in immediately.
It was excellent: a full kitchen, bathroom, washing machine, air conditioning, balcony and stunning views. Everything we could have needed. WiFi was reliable at around 50 Mbps.
We'd booked on a budget and hoped to split the bed into two singles, but it was a premium queen-size bed and couldn't be separated. That wasn't the hotel's fault - we'd taken a chance when booking, and the bed was exceptionally comfortable.
When we called reception, they happily arranged and set up an additional single bed for us. Then, roughly 15 minutes later, they called back to say they'd like to do even better: my friend could have a completely separate room at no extra charge!
We were both celebrating our 30th birthdays, and this remarkable generosity within our first hour made the holiday before it had really begun. We were genuinely taken aback by their kindness. I don't think either of us has experienced hotel hospitality quite like it!
Breakfast was great, with plenty to eat, and fresh juices. Don't expect a standard British cooked breakfast, but for us, the pastries, fruit and cereal were perfect.
We didn't book half-board, so can't judge dinner, although the menu looked excellent and upmarket. If you plan to eat at the hotel, half-board may be worth arranging in advance as the restaurant prices reflect that style of dining.
All staff we met spoke excellent English, as did most people we encountered in Tivat, Kavač and Kotor.
The location is worth understanding before booking. Royal Blue sits high in Kavač and is very much a quiet retreat, not a hotel in the middle of town. We didn't hire a car and used MonteGo taxis to Kotor centre, paying around €25-€30 each way including tip. The Blue Line bus has just one service each way on school days: 7:15am from Kavač and 1:50pm back from Kotor. A hire car would probably be easier and cheaper.
Some reviews suggest the hotel is impossible to get to, but we had no issues. Even on our final day, during an orange weather warning with reports of four months' rainfall in a day and flash-flood warnings, getting up and down was absolutely fine. The two access roads are steep and narrow in places but have many drainage grates. One day, we walked downhill to the tunnel at the bottom of Kavač in around 40 minutes, then you'd need roughly another hour to reach Kotor on foot.
The village mini-market is small, just as other reviews say, but well stocked and stayed open until 9:30 pm during our visit. The lady running it spoke excellent English, and we found familiar brands at prices often lower than back in the UK. English is widely spoken in Montenegro, which makes visiting straightforward.
Kavač itself is very quiet and there's little to do on your doorstep. For us, this was a positive: we always choose peaceful areas when travelling. If you prefer busy streets, restaurants and bars within walking distance, consider somewhere like Cattaro Boutique Hotel in Kotor Old Town instead, where everything is on your doorstep. Royal Blue is ideal as a relaxing base to return to after exploring.
We intend to return to Montenegro, and Royal Blue will be top of our list.
The accommodation was beautiful and the location peaceful, but the people are what made this stay so special.
Thank you to everyone at Royal Blue for making our 30th birthdays unforgettable!
