I am surprised the average review exceeds one. I opened an account, and my initial deposit took seven days to be processed (weekend days don't count toward their five transfer days). Hopefully their mules aren't endangered while crossing the mountains.

Because I was informed that interest would start accruing from day one, even while the transfer was pending, I went ahead and tried to order checks. I was denied because of a zero balance. I didn't reorder any checks, but Sallie Mae checks were delivered in today's mail. I shredded them.

I moved my money, including the few days interest, back to its source. Minutes ago I sent Sallie Mae an email asking them not to harm their mules and too close my account.

Sallie Mae reps giving out misinformation to borrowers

Sallie Mae agent gave wrong advice that resulted in a surprise fee for me. They then denied providing a transcript of the conversation in which the Sallie Mae rep did not provide accurate information / provided misleading information. Firstly don't take any money from Sallie Mae, and secondly save transcripts of every single conversation via chat.

Sallie Mae never gave notice for cd maturity

Sallie Mae never sent email notification that my cd's were about to mature. When they mature you only have 10 days to either take the money or they automatically put you into another one without your consent.
I spoke to a representative and he said he knows that they don't do it and has asked them to make a change but they never do it.
Isn't it a law that you must be notified??

I am cosigning for a loan for my…

I am cosigning for a loan for my youngest son. The loan has been approved but when I tried logging in to sign the application a message came up saying to call this number because they required more info. It wouldn't let me login. I called the number and they said they had a different SS for me on a loan application I co-signed 6 years ago for my oldest son, who paid the loan off years ago. They said my SS and my oldest son's SS were switched and that they need to fix this before processing the current loan. They said it would take 5-10 business days. Each time I talked to a rep they said the same thing. The one I spoke with 7 days ago said because the date of births were also wrong it would take another 5-10 business days. When I called today they gave me the same run around. They said the last person would escalate it, but then told me it will be 5-10 business days. That doesn't sound like it was escalated. He refused to let me speak to the so called specialist and wouldn't provide me with the email he sent with the information. He refused to give me his manager's number and said she would call 1-3 business days. He refused to say how they would notify me when the issue is resolved. The last rep said I would have to just keep trying to login, and when it's resolved it should let me login. He ended the conversation with "god bless you". I constantly receive emails from Sallie Mae asking to login to sign the approval but yet cannot login until they figure out their own loan process. The rep said this was a known issue, but he was just saying what he thought I wanted to hear to get off the call.

Horrible for student and new grads

I graduated in 2024 and was immediately billed. They keep sending emails saying "there is help making arrangements," but they are all phony. I was never offered at least a couple of months' delay on my payments so I could readjust. The next month, they marked my credit report as delinquent. Avoid this service at all costs. Save yourself the stress; there are many other better services.

They suck

They suck, I asked for help about a loan they offered me and they told me that they can’t help me. They are just working there to get a paycheck to tell people screw you.

Bait and Switch on Bank Rate…

Applying for student loans today as my daughter will be attending a UC this fall. Saw Sallie Mae on Bank Rate with a fixed rate of 3.49%. I actually had my student loan with Sallie Mae back in the day. Filled in my info and income, as well as my daughter's; there was nowhere to include my wife's income, nor did the application request household income. Sallie Mae approved the loan at 8.5%. Interesting... I called to ask what happened to the 3.49%, but the representative said I would receive an approval letter with comments. My single income probably was not enough to cover the debt on my credit report, but they did not ask for household income. Stay away, and when Sallie Mae reads this, please clean up your act. Final question: Who does qualify for the 3.49%? BAIT AND SWITCH

It seems there are many if not all bad reviews of this crooked company on all review sites so my review will be nothing new.
They have confiscated nearly a million dollars of my deposits and told me to litigate if I want it back. They did this just because they could and out if evil will.
I complained about their terrible customer service so they took revenge. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS BAD COMPANY.

Awful company

Awful company. I never missed a single payment. But when I began having financial difficulties due to the necessity to pay for my meds out of pocket because insurance refused to cover it, I asked if I could have my payments temporarily reduced to interest only. They not only refused my request, they refused to lower my payments by any amount for any period of time. And they said they were fine with me discontinuing my medication in order to pay them. I only wish I knew what a horrible company this is beforehand.

DO NOT USE Sallie Mae!

DO NOT USE Sallie Mae!! We were told that they work with students after they graduate. They seemed so wonderful during the application process. Then they graduate and it starts. The harassment begins. They will not work with the student on payments! They will call everyone they can including her 75 year old grandparents! They are rude and will not help. Everytime you call its a different person. Each has thier own version of what the rules are. Besides threatening and harassing people they are no help and do not care what they do to people. Find another way to pay for school this is NOT worth it!!

Sallie Mae cosigner? good luck getting released!

Sallie Mae denied 3 times that cosigner release was uploaded, I tried to email a screen shot of upload but of course that was firewalled. then told me to fax or mail. i did both. then they did not release a month later after mail & fax. payoffs were made 4 months earlier. Another representative then says no, you cannot mail, you have to upload (so they can deny it was successful). So many ways to make it impossible to be released as a cosigner, they are masters of denial!

i spoke with ray employee ID E80909

i spoke with ray employee ID E80909. every person at sallie mae is absolutely disgusting but this individual in the hardship department was absolutely absurd. she was speaking so quickly and couldn't help me because my account wasn't delinquent yet. she laughed at me on the phone for asking questions on what my options are when i miss a payment even though i was trying to be proactive. the people that work here are disgusting, inhumane, and have no empathy. she also transferred me back to a different department because she did not want to transfer me to a supervisor. now i am on hold and will remain on hold until i speak with a supervisor to express how disgustingly rude she was to me. this place is absolutely trecherous. i do not reccomend this place to anyone. basically if your loans are not delinquent they will not speak to you, if you try to be proactive they will laugh at you, and if your account is delinquent they will tell you that you have 0 options and to "pay when you can", which isn't helpful because if you can't "pay when you can" your credit will plummet and they will solicit you. the saddest part of it all is that there are NO options to help those who can't pay, which sets people up to fail. i hope no one speaks with ray EID: E80909. its beyond me that entitlement that someone who works as a CS rep for hardships at sallie mae has the audacity to act as if they are better than anyone. shame on you ray and SHAME on you sallie mae.

AH- an update. talked to a supervisor in the collections department and she quite literally told me "if i can't pay my loan i shouldn't because there are no options they can provide me with" really smart sallie mae- let me just ignore my payments, have my credit score tank, be solicited, and have my assets seized!

Loan application process is absurd

Loan application process is absurd. We fill out the information, they want verification a few days later, but you cannot do this online and their offices are closed for those on western time zones. They ask personal questions- isn't that enough to verify? No transparency as to interest rates. Both student and cosigner have excellent credit scores- yet no one can tell us how rates are determined. Predatory- send multiple offers yet their promotional material give false expectations.

The worst loan company I’ve ever worked…

The worst loan company I’ve ever worked with. I will never work with them again. I borrowed $9,500 and have been paying the monthly bill for the past 2 years. Now I owe $11,500, doesn’t make any sense. The people are the worst that work for Sallie Mae. Dishonest people who are just trying to scam you out of your money. I would give no stars if I could.

Predatory lending & Nothing but frauds

Horrible dishonest company and nobody will do anything about their predatory and fraudulent lending practices. I somehow was approved for a Sallie Mae private loan for 2 semesters when I applied for federal loans and was working a part time job that I made $1000 per YEAR at. Then they made a personal reference a co-signer and will not take him off or address the fact that they added income that I didn’t have nor did I claim to have just to get the loan approved. I have filed several complaints and they will not ever directly address how the information on that application ended up there and how it got approved with so many obvious inconsistencies in their responses. This “co-signer” is my 75 year old father who is on a fixed income and would not be eligible to co-sign for one of their loans. I did not even qualify for this loan either for so many reasons but now I have to repay this at 15-16% rates! The amount “borrowed” was approximately $22k and after paying over $12k back this balance is still over $40k. How is this allowed for student loans?? They also claim to only lend based on verified need and they approved this loan in November for a semester that had already been paid for in August with a federal loan. Why can this company not be stopped?? They were already fined once for predatory lending and they just keep allowing them to do it! I will keep filing complaints and pursuing legal action until they are shut down.

Sallie Mae only helps those that really don't need it!

Sallie Mae is for students/families that are NOT in serious need for money for higher education! If education expenses are a mild annoyance to your family vacation plans so you need to borrow money for your or your child’s education and your credit is perfect, they are ALL IN making you a loan! HOWEVER, if you are a struggling student with fair to poor credit and no savings, they are not giving you or your equally as poor co-signers a chance! Every co-signer I applied with was rejected as quickly as I was! Poor people usually have poor friends and family! DUH! So Sallie Mae is in the business of making the rich richer and keeping the poor uneducated! I grew up hearing the name Sallie Mae as a hope for Black families, but they are NO HOPE I PROMISE YOU!

Brain cancer and no disability forgiveness

I have stage 3 brain cancer and Sallie Mae will not forgive my loans. I am on SSI disability, my radiologist wrote on their form that I am 4 out 5 scale mentally impaired, and that radiation damage progresses. Discover forgave my student loans with the same application. Sallie Mae has denied me 4 times. They use a third party insurance company, Securian, and they told me that they provide their opinion to Sallie Mae approve or deny forgiveness, and 99% of applications are denied and that even when they recommend approving the forgivess, that Sallie Mae still denies them.

Sallie Mae is the devil

I wish I could give 0 stars. This company is from hell. They ruined my life. They went after me while I was still in school and during Covid. My loan has increased by 33% because I couldn’t afford it. And their interest rate is 14.75%. How is this legal?! Sallie Mae is horrible and I DO NOT recommend at all.
