Disappointing experience and concerns over “goods as described”
I was considering purchasing a £295 cashmere and silk dressing gown from Shibumi Style because it looked beautiful on the website. The product listing showed clear front and back photographs, and I specifically chose one because the back looked elegant, unlike some others on the site that had a pointed shape at the lower back which I did not want.
Before ordering, I called to confirm that the dressing gown I received would match the photographs shown. To my surprise, I was told that if I wanted a guarantee that the garment would look exactly as shown in the photos, I would have to pay an additional £35.
I found this deeply concerning. My understanding as a consumer is that when a product is advertised with specific photographs, customers should be entitled to expect the item to match that description. In fact, this raised concerns for me about the “goods as described” principle under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, because I was effectively being told I needed to pay extra to be sure I would receive what was already being advertised.
I was told variations may occur because the garments are made in India and material is not wasted, but that explanation did not justify, in my view, charging extra for the product to match its own listing.
I also discovered there is a further £35 charge for faster delivery (3–4 weeks), otherwise the wait is apparently around two months. I asked whether, if paying the extra £35 for assurance the gown matches the photographs, the expedited delivery could be included, but was told no — both charges would apply, making £70 in additional charges.
This gave me the impression that extra fees are added at every stage, which felt misleading and unethical.
I asked about worker pay in India for a reason: given these additional charges for “guarantees” and delivery upgrades, I wanted to understand whether any of those extra fees benefit the workers making the garments, or whether these surcharges simply increase company margins. I received no transparency on this point, which added to my concerns.
I decided not to proceed with the purchase because I lost confidence in what I would actually receive for the price. For a luxury product at this price point, customers should not have to pay extra to ensure the item matches the advertised photographs.
I would strongly encourage potential buyers to ask detailed questions before ordering, particularly about whether the garment will match the images shown, what surcharges may apply, and delivery times.

The quality and uniqueness of Shibumi clothing draws attention and compliments every single time! The colours and patterns are so inviting to the eye, that wearing a Shibumi jacket or vest over almost anything - a simple dress, shirt & skirt or trousers, even jeans, makes you look distinctive and sophisticated, I have many Shibumi scarves, jackets and vests in a rainbow of colours and I know I will continue to wear them for years, and long after other items of clothing have been given away, they will remain perpetual favourites.

I felt amazing at my daughter’s wedding in my beautiful peacock blue Shibumi knee length coat. Ruth’s welcome to her showroom was warm and friendly and her expertise and guidance were exactly what I needed.

The quality of the coat, the fit and the efficiency of the delivery were wonderful. I can’t recommend them highly enough. I was so impressed in fact that I am wearing a gold Shibumi Nehru coat to my son’s wedding later this year. Can’t wait 😊.

We visited Shibumi to look for an outfit for our daughter’s wedding. I had done quite a bit of research on their website and loved their designs and beautiful silk fabrics. With Paris’s help I chose an embroidered silk coat and a silk shift dress. My husband also chose a waistcoat in the same fabric as my coat. Throughout my visit Paris was very helpful and in subsequent contact with her regarding having a tie made she was unfailingly cheerful and helpful. We are very much looking forward to the wedding and love our chosen outfits. There was only one small drawback, a designated fitting room would have been very helpful.

I was looking for a present for my sister and suddenly thought of Shibumi. I ordered a jacket which I thought she would enjoy wearing but was worried about the fit. Her birthday is a week before Christmas so there would be no time for her to send it back... I wrote to ask (a) if she could send it back after Christmas - she could; (b) if they could send it with no bill as it was a present - they could with an exchange label. They also did their best to make sure it reached her on her birthday, which it did. She loves her jacket and is very happy with it. Thank you, Paris!

My delightful experience dealing with Shibumi began with an exciting visit to their Showroom to try on different styles and colours of the beautiful coats I had seen online. Ruth was extremely attentive and helpful so that it was easy for me to make a decision. I found exactly what I was looking for in the material Avalon and style Lyra. I wore my elegant outfit to my daughter's wedding and received many, many compliments! I can't wait to wear my coat again as not only does it look stunning, it is very comfortable to wear. Thank you Shibumi, I'll be back!

A wonderful visit to Ruth at Shibumi yesterday to find a Coat for my Wedding. Between the Grown up children and Ruth The decision was made very easy.

The most beautiful jacket I've ever bought. Beautifully made. It made heads turn at my wedding! It was packed with care plus instructions on how to look after the pure silk. It arrived on time. I would recommend this company Shibumi to anyone.

Shibumi was recommended to me by a friend. Attending the premises and meeting the woman behind the business made the experience more personal. There is such a great range of styles, colours and luxurious fabrics, which suit all. The silk coats are so flexible in terms of wearability. I got a perfect dress and coat for a wedding at St Paul's Cathedral. Affordable luxury.

Bought Aquila coat in aqua teal for myself and waistcoat for my husband for our daughter’s wedding. Had so many people comment on them and both will be reused at many occasions afterwards . Was nice to have something different from the pastel coat and mid length dress and as someone who can’t wear high heels the long coat was a better choice.

Also bought a dress kimono which was not so successful as fit a bit strange and material likely to pull with little encouragement, otherwise would have given 5 stars.

I came across Shibumi while searching for the simple but perfect dress and coat to wear as the mother of the groom for a September wedding in the US. I ended up in a weeks-long email exchanges with the Shibumi team, including Ruth. With very specific customizations and great advice and customer service from Ruth, I ended up with the exact wedding outfit I wanted. It was fabulous and so special. Thank you to the Shibumi team. I will wear my outfit for years to come, both together and as separates, and hope to add another coat to my event wardrobe in the future.

For my daughter’s wedding I wanted something special, something different and eye catching. Having seen a member of the royal family in a rather lovely coat, I did a bit of investigating and found it to be from Shibumi. My daughters and I visited the shop near Stroud and I was blown away by the choice of stunning fabrics and styles. Ruth was so helpful and although there were several coats I could quite happily have worn, I kept being drawn to the wonderful bright pink (Rhapsody) and the Lyra design.
I was so pleased with my choice and countless people commented on the coat (not the wearer!) It was a joy to wear and I hope there will be an excuse to purchase another Shibumi garment before long.

Walking into the wondrous showroom of glorious colours and designs we had a warm welcome when we arrived and made to feel very comfortable. Ruthie and Paris were professional and friendly and put me at ease to choose an outfit for our son's wedding. With their guidance and help I chose the perfect jacket to which they were happy to add a cuff detail. I also needed to buy fabric for my own dress. There was no pressure to decide on my visit. I was given detailed information to take away and make my final choice. I'm delighted with the beautiful jacket and fabric and can't wait to create a dress to match.

I purchased my Jacket after visiting the Shibumi website and eagerly awaited its arrival.. this was my wedding Jacket of choice.
It arrived perfectly wrapped and boxed and once opened I became quite emotional, the colours, the texture, the fit, I have never had a garment of clothing make me feel this way.
