Military Compensation Success! Any veteran that has tried (in vain) to seek compensation from DVA/Defence will have been frustrated and worn down by the bureaucracy and tactics that are used to wear us down to the point of giving up. It worked on me and I was resigned to the fact that it was too hard. I was medically discharged from the RAN as MUNS (Medically Unfit for Navy Service) "for causes not within the sailors own control". In short - THEIR fault, however I was getting no support and the run around for decades and had given up.
I saw a news report where Slater and Gordon where assisting veterans as they specialised in veteran support on a no win no pay basis so I felt I had nothing to loose so I would give it one last push. From the first meeting I felt that finally someone was on my side, they were very willing to do the hard work for me and I learned that there were other options and avenues that I could take that I had not been made aware of, even by the RSL (not bagging the RSL, they are just not experts in this field).
S&G (Especially Pia Annan-Anderson, my specialist Military Compensation Lawyer and her assistant Ashleigh Cutler) were relentless and extremely skilled with how they managed my case, and how they managed me. I was worn down by the system and wasn't always as responsive as I should have been but Pia and Ashleigh kept contacting me and leaving messages to work with me until I would eventually respond.
Bottom line, I WON and received a suitable compensation payout. Even though it was a no win no fee contract, Pia wanted to ensure I was happy with the offer and checked with me a number of times before I signed, even though it risked me rejecting the offer which meant S&G wouldn't get paid. That was the true sign that they wanted the best for me.
Although a cash payout was very helpful, it also opened up future assistance benefits that I may be entitled to as my condition deteriorates. An unexpected, and considerable benefit was the peace it finally gave me, as I let go of the resentment I carried towards the 'system' and how I had lost my drive to push for compensation as it was finally resolved and I was happy with the outcome. The two words I have left don't do Pia or Ashleigh justice - THANK YOU.

Our family dealt with Brian Briggs (Military Compensation Lawyer) at Slater and Gordon with legal matters spanning 5 years. This would have been a fairly stressful and difficult time for our family. I was facing an impending medical discharge in the ADF and felt completely overwhelmed by the fear of the unknown that was dealing with DVA Claims and transitioning back in to the civilian world. The tedious and convoluted claims process, as well as the extremely poor wait times and service from DVA was a major stressor in an otherwise already difficult time. Anyone looking for a Military compensation lawyer I can't recommend Slater & Gordon enough, in particular, Brian Briggs. His knowledge and understanding on DVA and their system/protocols is extremely re-assuring and so very helpful. Every time I felt overwhelmed or unsure about something, I could always ring and speak to Brian - and if he didn't answer, he would call me back almost instantly. Same goes with Hilary Briggs who also helped guide me on this journey in which I received the best possible outcome I could hope for. I struggled originally with finding good health care professionals who understood the struggles and stresses that you deal with when going through the DVA process and Brian and Hilary steered me in the right directions which made a massive positive impact on not only my health but also with my claims as they understood the processes - this made dealing with this whole process much easier.
