From TBL Theory to Real Classroom Practice

Task-Based Learning for Teachers takes you from theory to practice in just 20 hours in a way I haven’t experienced in other teacher-training courses.

It’s a genuine eye-opener. Rather than simply explaining the principles behind Task-Based Learning, the course shows you how to put them into practice and gives you the tools to rethink how lessons are designed and delivered.

The impact on us has gone well beyond the course itself. We’ve decided to make it a central part of our continuous professional development program for teachers at BEC Exec Academy.

I would highly recommend it to teachers and academic teams who want to move beyond understanding TBL in theory and actually apply it effectively in the classroom.

Thank you so much for your generous and thoughtful review. It means a great deal to hear that TBL4T helped bridge the gap between understanding TBLT and applying its principles in real classrooms. That movement from theory into informed classroom decision-making is at the heart of the course.

Learning that BEC Exec Academy has chosen to make TBL4T a central part of its ongoing professional development program is especially meaningful. I’m grateful for the trust you have placed in the course and excited to see how your teachers continue adapting and developing these ideas within their own contexts.

Thank you as well for recommending TBL4T to other teachers and academic teams. It has been a pleasure working with you, and I look forward to continuing this journey together.

The beginning of a much deeper TBLT journey

I joined the first cohort of TBLT for Teachers after already spending a few years exploring task-based language teaching on my own.

I’ve known Leo and his work for over five years and had studied with him before, so I already trusted the quality of what he creates. But what made joining this course an obvious decision for me was the subject itself.

Back in 2023, I started experimenting with the concept of tasks in my own teaching. I run Jessy Academy, a program for intermediate and upper-intermediate learners who want to move beyond the intermediate plateau, not because they are preparing for an exam, but because they want to communicate more fluently, confidently, and comfortably in English. I wanted my classroom to revolve around communication rather than simply learning language and then hoping students would eventually use it.

Tasks seemed like a natural fit, and I saw great results from the beginning. My learners were engaged and communicating much more. But I also knew there was a huge difference between incorporating tasks into my lessons and actually understanding Task-Based Language Teaching.

This course helped bridge that gap.

One of the things I appreciated most was the diversity of the cohort. We had teachers working in universities, schools, independent contexts, groups, one-to-one lessons, with adults and teenagers, and with very different levels of freedom over their curricula. As an independent teacher, I can often learn something and immediately change what I do. Seeing how other teachers interpreted and adapted the same principles to much more constrained contexts helped me understand that TBLT isn't a rigid framework you either follow perfectly or abandon. It can become a philosophy that informs the decisions you make as a teacher.

And we didn't just talk about tasks. We experienced them.

We learned about tasks through doing tasks, analysing them, reflecting on what had happened and then connecting that experience to the theory. That made a huge difference. Instead of leaving with abstract definitions, I could see how the principles actually operate inside a lesson.

The course is theoretically rich, with plenty of reading recommendations, but also extremely practical. I definitely didn't manage to read everything that was recommended, and I still came away with an enormous amount. The discussions, practice and exchanges with teachers from different backgrounds constantly pushed me to reconsider my own assumptions.

It also helped me look back at my own teaching with much more clarity. I can now say that what I was doing in 2023 wasn't really TBLT yet, but it was the beginning of the journey. The course gave me the theoretical foundation to understand why some of those early decisions worked, what was missing, and where I wanted to go next.

The sessions on curriculum design and assessment were particular highlights for me. Assessment wasn't an area I had explored deeply through a TBLT lens before, and that part of the course was exceptionally clear and immediately useful. I honestly could have spent another two sessions just discussing curriculum and assessment.

That probably points to my main criticism as well: there is a LOT to explore, and some sessions could easily have been longer or divided into two. Because this was the first cohort, there were also moments when sessions ran beyond the original schedule. I think tightening the timing while perhaps giving some of the bigger topics more space would make an already excellent course even stronger.

But this is also important: this course isn't trying to turn eight weeks into a master's degree in TBLT. It gives you enough depth to understand the foundations, question your current teaching, start making informed changes and, most importantly, know what you still want to investigate.

For me, it was a 10/10 experience and the beginning of a much longer journey.

If you're a teacher who feels that itch that there must be another way to teach — if you want communication to exist from day one rather than being something students earn after enough grammar and vocabulary — I highly recommend TBLT for Teachers.

You won't leave knowing everything about TBLT. I don't think that should be the goal.

You'll leave knowing enough to start seeing your classroom differently. And that, for me, is much more valuable.

Thank you so much for this thoughtful, generous, and refreshingly honest review, Jessica.

Because you had already been exploring tasks for several years, it means a lot to hear that TBL4T helped connect what you were doing intuitively with a stronger theoretical foundation.

I especially appreciate your distinction between incorporating tasks into lessons and understanding TBLT as a broader philosophy that informs teacher decision-making. That movement was at the heart of the course design. We experienced tasks, examined what happened, and then connected that experience to theory.

Thank you as well for naming the limitations so clearly. You are right that some sessions contained more than the available time could comfortably accommodate, and we occasionally ran beyond the scheduled time. That's why we're expanding it to 10 sessions this fall - and possibly 12 in the winter. Curriculum design and assessment, in particular, deserved more space. That is feedback I’m carrying into future cohorts: tighter pacing, clearer time boundaries, and more room for the larger topics.

Most of all, I’m glad the course felt like the beginning of a journey. I never wanted participants to leave believing they had mastered everything about TBLT. I hoped they would leave with stronger foundations, sharper questions, and a clearer sense of where they wanted to go next.

Thank you for bringing your experience, honesty, and curiosity to our first cohort. You made the course richer for everyone.

Yes sir, I can TBLT

TBLT was not new to me. I had read about it, and I had even taken a course on TBLT a while ago. But back then, I thought that it was not the right choice for my teaching context. I also found it very difficult to meet all the requirements of a truly task-based course, especially given the fact that I have to follow a mandatory curriculum. All in all, I felt that I was not ready to design a course using tasks and I couldn't see how TBLT could be adapted to my teaching context.

Then along came Leo with his TBL4T, and as a follower of his work and podcast, I decided to give it a go. This course has changed the way I see TBLT, and now I can see myself designing a course using tasks, even within the constraints of a mandatory curriculum.

TBL4T has shown me that there is no single path to follow and that TBLT exists on a continuum. Some people follow a strong version, while others prefer a weak version, with many other possibilities between these two extremes. This course has given me the space I needed to experiment and see where I can position myself on that continuum.

I know that there is still a long road ahead of me, and that the learning process is far from over, but now I have the resources and the confidence to experiment and to continue learning more about TBLT. It's truly been an enlightening experience that I would recommend to anyone interested in TBLT.

Respuesta de TBL4T: Task-Based Learning for Teachers

Thank you so much for this thoughtful review, Oscar. Your experience speaks directly to one of the reasons I wanted to create TBL4T.

Mandatory curricula and institutional constraints are real. No course can make them disappear. But I hoped TBL4T could help teachers see more possibilities within those constraints and make more informed decisions.

I’m glad the course helped you move from “TBLT is not right for my context” to “How might TBLT work in my context?” This is such an important shift because adapting an approach does not mean abandoning its principles. It means understanding those principles well enough to decide how they can shape your teaching now, and what further changes might become possible over time.

It was wonderful to see you use the course as a space to experiment, locate your own position, and build confidence without feeling pressured to follow a single perfect model.

Thank you for trusting me and for bringing your questions and constraints so honestly into the cohort. There is always more to learn, but I’m excited to see where your TBLT journey takes you next.

A course that changed how I see TBLT

A course that changed how I see TBLT

I was already working with a TBLT-like approach, but my lessons often lacked a clear sense of progression. My main reservation about TBLT was that it could become a straitjacket, compromising something I value deeply: student agency and the realness of interaction in class. Ironically, in trying so hard to protect students’ freedom, I realised I was also limiting the opportunities for the kind of friction that can push a learner further.

Experiencing TBLT from the inside, as both a learner and a teacher, changed everything. I could experience the logic of task design rather than simply learn about it.

TBL4Teachers showed me that intentional design and student agency don’t have to be opposing forces. A teacher can create a coherent path towards an outcome while still leaving students room to make meaningful choices within it.

About Leo as a tutor: Leo really walks his talk. The courage to design a course that itself is built around tasks was proof of his belief in what he was defending. I also deeply appreciated his respect for each participant’s previous experience and context.

For me, TBL4Teachers wasn’t simply a course about TBLT. It helped me rethink the relationship between design and agency, direction and freedom, and authenticity and progression. More importantly, it changed the way I see my own teaching.

Thank you so much for your deeply thoughtful review, Marisa. Your reflection on the relationship between design and agency goes right to the heart of what we hoped TBL4T would explore.

A coherent path does not have to close down freedom. It can create the conditions for meaningful choices, productive friction, and genuine interaction. I’m especially glad that experiencing the course through tasks, rather than only learning about them, helped make that visible.

Designing TBL4T around the principles it examines was important to me, so your comment that I “walk the talk” means a great deal. Your experience, curiosity, and willingness to question your own assumptions also enriched the learning for the entire cohort.

Thank you for bringing your teaching context so generously into the course. I’m honoured that TBL4T helped you see your practice differently, and grateful to have learned alongside you.

A standout professional development experience

I completed the first cohort of TBL4T, and it has been one of the most meaningful professional development experiences I’ve taken part in.

The course is a 20-hour deep dive into Task-Based Language Teaching, analysing tasks, designing them, teaching them, and examining what happens when learners engage with them. I’ve been working with task-based ideas for years, but this course gave me the structure, space, and evidence base to examine my practice more carefully and push it further.

What stood out most was the attention to task in action: not just what a task is supposed to do, but what learners do with it. This changed how I observe performance, how I support learners in real time, and how I think about the relationship between planning and lived classroom interaction.

Leo’s facilitation was thoughtful, honest, and grounded in research. The cohort format made the learning richer – real discussions, real examples, and real challenges. Nothing felt generic or pre-packaged.

If you’re a teacher who wants to deepen your understanding of TBLT and refine your practice with evidence-based guidance, this course is worth your time. It helped me clarify my thinking, sharpen my teaching decisions, and reconnect with why task-based work matters.
