Highly recommend!

As a first-time buyer, the mortgage process felt a bit daunting at first – but Lana made everything so much easier. She was incredibly helpful, patient, and always happy to explain things clearly. Her support gave me real confidence throughout the journey, and I can’t thank her enough for making the whole experience smooth and stress-free. Highly recommend!

Not recommended for mortgages

Not recommended for mortgages. Although the products look good, the Hanley's unethical (IMO) treatment of customers might be questioned. Although they protested, when questioned, that they don't always increase their SVR when the bank rate increases, in my experience this only happened once. However, they didn't reduce their SVR in response to any of the three recent bank rate reductions. What makes this shameful (IMO) is that they are now offering new customers significantly better discounts from SVR compared to the discount given to existing customers - and we weren't allowed to move our mortgage to any of the new products! So we were stuck. Needless to say, we have now moved to a different building society, saving £175 per MONTH in interest payments!
Insurance companies aren't allowed to offer preferential rates to new customers, so how come building societies can get away with it?

Ripped us off by £840 for a mortgage application thatey knew they wouldn't accept, Robbing cowboys

Terrible, incapable robbers. They took £840 off us for an application for a mortgage and rejected the application immediately without communication, proper review of our application evidence or consultation, They had no intention of lending us the money even though our deposit was 50% of what we wanted to lend. If they did this to just 100 customers they would make a neat £80k without lifting a finger, corrupt and greedy

This is a rather curious outfit, perhaps an understatement

This is a rather curious outfit. Perhaps an understatement.

I opened the Branch Saver in 2023 - this took forever and was very stressful. Apparently they were short staffed and the account was massively subscribed. Presumably they hadn't envisaged this happening.

However, the weirdest thing ever, and extraordinarily out of line, is that I have never once received any notification of any drop in interest rate on the account. This failure is of course totally out of line with required practice, so I'm at a loss to understand how this building society thinks this is acceptable.

Having checked in February about the interest on the account, today, again when I went online I found it had dropped again. Are they not aware that this is contrary to their obligation to their customers?

Mortgage Rate disparity

Following on from DG's review below i alos have a RIO.
I have contacted the Hanley today to enquire as to when they will be adjusting their SVR to reflect the 3 reductions in base rates.
I have been told today that they have no intention of reducing their rates to reflect the cuts but are keeping it under review.
I havent checked their savings rates but i am wondering if it is possible that savings rates have have been reduced to reflect the cuts?
Is it possible that The Hanley is bolstering their margin to the disadvantage of those on SVR rate mortgages?
Time for pastures new I think!

Thank you for your message on the topic of why the society hasn’t reduced its Standard Variable Rate (SVR) when there have been a number of Bank of England base rate decreases. Our explanation for this to reassure you that the society has your best interests at heart.

Several factors are considered when we set our interest rates for both mortgage and savings customers. The Bank of England base rate is one factor we consider, and we offer products which are directly linked to the rate so that customers can be confident that any changes will be reflected in their own rate. Other products which are linked to our SVR are priced in a different way to ensure we can offer competitive rates as an alternative.

Each individual customer will have needs which differ and for this reason we offer a range of products to suit individual circumstances. This includes the tracker and discount products mentioned above as well as fixed rates. Whilst we are unable to comment on reductions made by other lenders, I would like to reassure you that all of our product pricing is done to ensure that we offer the best value for money to our members.

As a mutual building society our aim is to ensure that we meet the needs of both borrowers and savers and treat everyone fairly whilst offering competitive rates. Thank you for your feedback on this matter and rest assured we consider the impact of any decisions about interest rates very carefully before a decision is made. We publish updates on our website if there are any change to interest rates to ensure our members are kept informed and can take any necessary action. We offer appointments with our mortgage advisors who are happy to provide recommendations based upon individual needs.

If you would like to further discuss this then please contact us on 01782 25500.

Failure to pass on BoE rate reductions

I have a lifetime discounted mortgage with the Hanley that started approximately 2 years ago when the rate was very competitive. I think this attracted a lot of customers as they were very busy at the time I applied.
They subsequently increased the rate with the BoE base rate rises, which was expected but still kept them competitive.
This problem is that the base rate has now dropped 3 times since August 2024 and they have failed to adjust their SVR accordingly leaving customers like me on a higher uncompetitive rate. Most other lenders have lowered their SVR in line with the BoE base rate reductions.
I'd really hoped that this was a mortgage I could stay on for the full term (20 years) rather than having to switch every few years but there are now much cheaper deals out there (0.75% less) so it makes sense to look elsewhere.

Shocking service

Shocking service. Longstanding customer of 7 years and I had erroneous activity on my bank and payments got cancelled luckily Halifax was on it. Made aware by Harley their DD was cancelled so contacted them got it sorted or so I thought.

Now in the call no one said anything about a double payment just that they’d take the next payment out in the 1st of the month. Next thing threatening letter (never had a missed payment ever with them) so I paid it as soon as they clued me in to what they wanted. Emailed them to tell them how disappointed I was in them. Cue 2 dismissive and quite bullish letters from them.

I worked 2 jobs one full time the other 2 days on a weekend to avoid not paying. To get a letter making out after 7 years not a missed payment questioning my money sense, finger pointing and just having a bad customer service approach. I was going to stay until this. Not now. Don’t trust.

Smooth application process but not passing on lower borrowing costs

Recently took out a new mortgage on a discounted variable rate which was advertised in July and completed in August. Went through a broker London and Country who were great and the communication asking for documents was smooth between lender and broker. Had to have a revised offer due to an error on L&C's part which was resolved with 2 working days. The only downfall is that since my application there has not been a reduction in their SVR following 2 BOE rate cuts. I appreciate that the rate is not directly linked to the BOE Rate, however they are one of only a small minority of lenders that have not reduced their rates which I find very disappointing. L&C have a 'SVR watch' page on their website which I have been checking so I know they are the minority.

Disappointingly behind the times.

I like the staff, the mortgage products were excellent (when I had one) and they were really accommodating about the amount I could borrow & any changes I needed to make over the term.
It’s great that our small town still has a branch and I do appreciate it very much. However, they’re so far behind the times where the banking apps and savings books are concerned, and interest rates for savings accounts are fairly low.
They still insist on people using passbooks and there’s a £10 charge if you lose them. I can’t say I’ve ever had a bank/building society which has done this. They also post books out, so we’d have to pay if the passbook was lost in the post, which I don’t feel is acceptable.
You can’t make any withdrawals (even from instant accounts) without the passbook, not even if you have other forms of ID and if you ask them to transfer the money to an account it came from. I’ve been told I need to close the account to access it if I don’t want to pay the £10 Lost Book Fee. The online banking app doesn’t work for all accounts. This account allows for instant access, but you can’t transfer any money using the app.
All in all, it’s such a shame they’re so far behind and such dinosaurs.

Poor online service

The online functionality is incredibly poor and light years behind its competitors. Often crashes when trying to log in. So slow that you can literally go and make a cup of tea whilst waiting in between screens. Whenever I transfer money it takes an age and then gives an error message saying it did not work. The first few times I tried again but ended up transferring the money twice. I quickly figured out the error message is in-fact, ironically, an error and the money was transferred. Overall, in a modern world, the online service is woefully lacking!

Disrespectful customer service

Myself and my cousin visited the Hanley Economic to disclose a Bereavement. We thought we would be taken into A room to go through my late mum's accounts but it was all done in reception area. What happened to confidentiality and respect. The lady from the bereavement team didn't even say 'I'm sorry for your loss'. And yet other banks and companies have been sincerely sorry and respectful. The lady 'pulled her face' and when she said did I want a cheque or bank transfer costing £25 I said 'is it ok if I make a quick call to my bank' She pulled her face again.
We were glad to get out of there. The vibes this lady was giving off weren't of a friendly nature by any means and to have to deal with my mum's financial affairs in reception is disrespectful and dreadful customer service. If I was attending Hanley Economic days after my mum's passing, I would have walked out. I will be submitting a complaint.

Awful lender - AVOID

Took a month to review my personal mortgage application and then rejected it because I have a BTL within my limited company (which runs at a profit).
Avoid these utter cretins at all costs.

Lana is a credit to the company

We completed our mortgage application with Lana. To say she was amazing is an understatement. She was so lovely and friendly, she actually felt like a friend who was truly happy for us throughout our application process. She was professional and explained everything throughout and at every stage so we always knew what was happening. I would recommend the hanley as the products are competitive and Lana is an excellent mortgage advisor who is a credit to the society.

Thankyou so much.

Why are we waiting

I opened a savings account online on 21st Dec and nothing happens - finally discovered their chat line on 12th Jan, but a conversation takes forever as if one person is chatting to several customers at the same time.
Finally she gets my account opened, but tells me the introductory letter might take weeks to get to me, so she will give me details so I can pay money in straight away, ' but I waited forever and no details came and I had to go out.

Avoid like the plague

Basically a racket! Had a 2 year fixed with Hanley which wasn’t really fixed for two years at all only for 18 months. Have sorted a remortgage as their nee fixed rates were pathetic. Hanley sent my new lender the wrong redemption statement which means I couldn’t complete on the intended day. Not only that but Hanley are charging me £48 a day in interest until my mortgage switches over. It’s ridiculous! Hanley probably won’t reply to this review as they are too busy ripping people off!!
