Our aim is to turn what HMRC require into the most straight forward and easy to understand process as possible, but you're right - depending upon what we need to ask, due to a client's individual circumstances, there can still sometimes be a fair amount of information required.
That said, clients normally find the suggestions that appear throughout the application process pretty useful when they're not sure where to find certain pieces of information.

Poor communication
Took 3 e-mails to get a response to an ongoing tax issue which was submitted by the tax refund company in June 23, have now been told it will be chased up, but could be another 6 months

Hi Graham, so sorry to hear that you've had a poor experience.
Under normal circumstances our team ensure all emails are cleared and dealt with each day, so what you're describing is not like us at all.
Would you be able to provide your reference number (it will be on any of the emails that we will have sent you) so that we can investigate this matter?
Edit - Thanks for providing your details Graham. We can see that we successfully obtained a claim for you back in 2021 for earlier tax years.
We've now spoken to HMRC on your behalf with regards to your ongoing issue and have got to the bottom of what has caused it.
Strictly speaking, this is not something that we would normally deal with as your ongoing tax issue has not been caused by anything that we have done and is outside of our normal area of expertise. The issue has been caused by a number of events including:
A cessation claim made by yourself
A PPI claim made by another agent
A job change where no P45 was provided
Under normal circumstances, were you to be experiencing tax issues due to work carried out on your behalf by ourselves, then the costs involved would have been covered by our guarantees. Unfortunately, as you know, we have had no hand in any of the above.
The person that you were dealing with was looking to see if they could help reduce your underpayment, but has been unable to do so - we have had no official response from HMRC other than today's telephone conversation, hence the delay.
Our apologies for not being in touch sooner and sorry we have been unable to help you in this matter.

This company contact me every year, and although previously they have not been able to help me or my rebate was less than their fee, this time they have come up trumps. I've deducted a star as the bank have declined the cheque they have sent, but I'm confident it will be sorted out.
Update: The cheque wouldn't scan in banking app or machine, so had to go into branch to pay it in. All good now!

Hi Karen, thanks for getting in touch. Great to hear we were able to correct your tax affairs for you, although not so great to hear about the situation with the cheque.
We issue thousands of refund cheques every year, on the rare occasion that there is a problem with one our bank usually notifies us and we either re-issue it or arrange for a bank transfer.
I've spoken to our payments team and they've not had any notifications for anyone with the name Karen Band. Likewise, when I have searched our system, we don't appear to have had any applications from anyone under that name either.
Please could you contact us with your reference number or the name you used on your application so that we can look into this and ensure that we can get your refund to you?

Exactly what it says on the tin
Did exactly what they said they would, and in a reasonable timeframe. Got my money within a month or two, which isn't bad considering it's HMRC we're talking about. Of course TRC took their fee, but if like me you weren't planning on doing it yourself, it's worth it to get anything back.
