I am extremely disappointed with the way Trusted Building Supplies handled my situation.

I purchased 8 roof drain outlets from them, but unfortunately they were not suitable for the job and I needed to return them. The day after, I unexpectedly had to leave the country to care for my seriously ill father, who sadly passed away.

While I was still abroad, I contacted the company by email and explained my circumstances in advance. I made it clear that I wanted to return the items, but because I was outside the country caring for my father, I would not physically be able to return them within their 30-day returns period. I asked whether, given the exceptional circumstances, they could accommodate the return when I got back.

Their response was simply that they would not accept the return outside the 30-day period.

After being away for approximately two months dealing with one of the most difficult periods of my life, I returned to the UK and called them. I was then told that the reason they couldn’t accept the items was because their supplier wouldn’t take them back after 30 days.

I find this explanation extremely frustrating. I notified Trusted Building Supplies within the relevant period and gave them advance notice of the situation. In my view, that gave them an opportunity to contact their supplier at the time and explain that a customer needed to make a return but was temporarily unable to physically send the goods back because he was abroad caring for his dying father.

I wasn’t asking for special treatment without explanation. I communicated with them, explained an extremely difficult and exceptional family circumstance, and tried to deal with the return responsibly.

Policies are important, but so are common sense, compassion and customer service. Sometimes businesses have an opportunity to look beyond a rigid policy and genuinely try to help a customer facing exceptional circumstances. Unfortunately, that was not my experience here.

I have been left with 8 outlets that I cannot use, despite contacting the company and explaining the situation while I was away.

For me, the most disappointing part isn’t simply that they refused the return — it’s the complete lack of flexibility and understanding shown during a bereavement.

Based on my experience, I would find it very difficult to purchase from Trusted Building Supplies again or recommend them to others.
