The vents above the showers desperately…
The vents above the showers desperately need cleaning and are covered in dust, looking like the dust could fall down at any moment. The shower partitions could be cleaner, and the showerhead design is terrible, spraying water onto the door and soaking your towel. The pool sometimes has debris floating in it. I also saw staff cleaning the drainage grates and pushing dirty water towards the pool, with some of it flowing back in while people were swimming. This was unpleasant and unhygienic. Lifeguards also often sit wearing shoes, which doesn’t look particularly professional. The gym itself is fine ( The Village Gym Reading )
Retaliatory Ban Following Active EHO Health & Safety Investigation
I am writing this review to publicly expose severe corporate misconduct, whistleblower retaliation, and the falsification of account data logs at the executive and local club management level of VUR Trading (Village Gym Ashton Moss).
After patiently raising documented hygiene and serious Health & Safety concerns (including staff working at height hazards) internally between 18 and 23 June, the local General Manager refused to manage the operational risks. While he admitted the failure in writing—stating, "I have engaged with our nominated contractors to clean and service these units and will hopefully receive a date for completion shortly"—the work was simply never done. Instead, he explicitly instructed me in writing: "If you do have concerns that you wish to raise with the EHO then please do this."
I followed management's formal directive and reported the venue to the Environmental Health Office (EHO). On 21 September, the EHO formally confirmed to me that their health and safety investigation into the facility was active and ongoing.
Exactly 72 hours later, on 24 September, local management punitively terminated my membership. They weaponised Clause 11.1.3 of their terms, textually stating that my ban was a result of sending "excessive emails" regarding "our Health and Safety practices and the EHO." Rather than addressing severe structural failures, they chose to penalise a consumer for cooperating with a live statutory investigation.
To compound this breach of the Consumer Rights Act 2015, management subsequently falsified central database logs to record this punitive ban as a "user-requested cancellation"—an explicit act of internal deception designed to mask their retaliation from head office and protect branch KPIs. Furthermore, they proceeded to illegitimately pull unauthorized Direct Debit fees for October despite blocking my physical access in September.
This corporate behaviour exposes the completely asymmetric nature of their operation: signing up online takes less than two minutes, but trying to cancel requires navigating a punitive 90-day notice barrier—assuming you can even get hold of Member Relations.
Yet, when it comes to covering up their own regulatory failures, local management can instantly terminate an account in 72 hours without notice.
The executive legal suite, including Philip Kreczak and General Counsel Kelli Turner, have been handed an ironclad pre-action timeline. A formal Subject Access Request (SAR) has now been deployed to extract the back-end database audit trails. Full files are being advanced to Trading Standards and the HM Courts & Tribunals Service (Small Claims) for statutory breach of contract. Disgraceful, deceptive corporate behaviour. Avoid this chain at all costs.
DO NOT BOTHER WITH THE PLACE!!!
Dont know where to start, i signed up just shy of a month ago to Cheadle Village Gym and i have nothing good to say. The workers are rude in “Every Aspect” The Gym states they close at 9pm during weekends so tell me why if i turn up at 8pm they try to kick you out at 8:40 not only about the times you, No kindness involved whatsoever woudlnt even let you finish your workout even when it comes 8:45. You pay 50 a month for the whole gym yet your not allowed in certain studios even though they come in your package, The small guy with brown hair, glasses wearing checkered vans clearly doesnt want to be there even though its his work space comes in swearing and complaining the weights arent in their original spot even though its his job to make sure they are.. Ive have tried to cancel my membership and you need proof of losing your job/a sick note from the doctors or relocation from 15 miles+ to be able to cancel but if you cant provide then your annual membership remains until you have paid every month what an absolute “JOKE” you would like to think they give u a heads up when they are moving stuff around or taking machines away..well no turned up the other night to see the main gym is pretty much empty with no heads up or warnings how on earth are you meant to do a full workout without the equipment that should be provided as you a paying to use them!! If you are thinking about coming here and paying the extra per month to use sauna/steam room/pool etc dont bother the place is an utter disgrace and i hope it goes beyond the point where they have to shut then doors for GOOD!!
I’ve been a member at the village gym…
I’ve been a member at the village gym Basingstoke for over 2 years now, and while the equipment and facilities are great, it’s the staff that really make the place—especially Sharon (everyone knows her as Shaz!). She is easily one of the hardest working people in the building. You will constantly see her keeping the gym floor and changing rooms in top shape, which makes a massive difference when you’re coming in week after week. But beyond that, she’s just an absolute ray of sunshine. No matter how busy she is, Shaz always greets you with a warm smile, remembers your face, and takes a second to check in on how your day is going. After 2 years of training here, I can comfortably say she’s a huge part of what makes this gym feel like a welcoming community rather than just a place to workout.
Shaz is a legend—give that woman a raise!
I love the atmosphere
I love the atmosphere, the options t is great ? The drag are helpful and friendly ,
Excellent classes
Excellent classes, love coming on the weekend for a chill out session. Nice and quiet and clean
Highly recommen Basingstoke Village Hotel Gym
I have been a member at Basingstoke Village gym since 2020 and really value it. The staff are always welcoming and friendly. I try to go to the gym and swim afterwards twice a week. It is helping me keep fit. I use the steam room and sauna and the new cold bath. I recommend the Village Gym at Basingstoke.
Great experience

Thank you Anna for making my experience…
Thank you Anna for making my experience great and relaxing I definitely will be coming back
The most appalling cancellation service…
The most appalling cancellation service I’ve experienced. I pay very high prices for the area and extra money for a flexible plan. Come to cancel due to moving and told it is THREE MONTHS notice!??? So they are taking almost £200 out of my account for an unused service after almost FIVE YEARS of loyalty despite their constant issues with the pool. Disgusting service- I will never be a member again.
Subscription membership nightmares
I would not recommend taking out a subscription with this gym at all.
The date agreed to start and confirmed in writing started a week earlier. When I wanted to leave despite giving more than the 3 months required notice I wasn’t allowed to leave at the end of 12 months as it was part way through a month, despite being allowed to join part way through months.
I joined under corporate membership and surprise surprise that ran out at the end of the year despite them insisting that my membership needed to continue for a further to weeks.
No I would not recomme
Avoid Village Gym Farnborough
Avoid Village Gym Farnborough. The ongoing construction works have made this club completely inaccessible and a nightmare to use.The alternative parking options they offer are a joke—nearly a mile away and totally unreasonable. Half the time you drive down, the branch is entirely full due to the congestion, meaning you can't even get inside the building to use the facilities you pay a premium for. I've literally had to drive all the way to the Basingstoke branch just to get a workout in. Even trying to visit at off-peak times doesn't save you from the chaos. When you pull them up on the fact that they are failing to provide the accessible service you pay for under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, they just try to lock you down into contracts and hold your money hostage. I have formally terminated my membership with immediate effect due to their breach of contract and cancelled my direct debit. Save your money and your sanity—look at alternative local clubs until this management team sorts out the mess they've created.
Village Gym, Southampton
I'm a member of the Southampton gym. It has a very premium feel to it as you park and look up at the windows to the gym. The entrance is a wristband operated turnstile and there's always someone at the reception. Staff are friendly and I have a great PT, Callum who is a super talented instructor and knowledgeable about rehab strength and conditioning. Changing areas are clean with ample lockers (lock operated by your wristband) and none seem broken. Floors are dried regularly and there's no mould in the showers. Gym floor is big with zones for functional, strength and cardio, very modern Technogym equipment and linked to the gym's app if you want to track progress. There are studios for classes and an outdoor circuit area. It can get very busy at peak times which can mean having to adjust any set routines you plan but there's usually enough equipment available to complete a solid workout.
Post workout there's a decent sized pool, plunge bath, sauna and steam room but again these can get quite crowded in peak times. Apart from the peak crowding, this a top tier gym and well worth the subscription fee.
Village Gym Bournemouth - don't waste your money
Village Gym Bournemouth. Not worth paying for. Frequently there are no car parking spaces due to conferences at the hotel. Often instructors do not turn up for classes yet members are not notified in advance and are just left sitting in a studio - having travelled miles. Staff don't even have correct contact numbers for instructors. During holiday times ie Summer and Christmas - many classes are cancelled. Staff never take any responsibility including the general manager. Air con in stuido frequently breaks down and takes weeks to be repaired. Having complained politely albeit frustrated many times, I recently filled out a member satisfaction survey - when I pointed out their failings I was asked to leave the club. In all honesty - they have done me a favour as I have joined a much better club now and should have done it ages ago.
Been a member since 2021
Been a member since 2021. My is pregnant and as a result couldn’t come to the gym with me no more. For 3 months now we’ve been trying to freeze her account with no luck. There’s not an email to send message to. Call and get directed to leave a message and never get a call back. It shouldn’t be this difficult to freeze or cancel a subscription considering we got registered at the gym and not online.
Pilates Reformer classes with Shelly
I do the Pilates Reformer classes and they are all brilliant. All different.
My favourite is Michelle Barret’s. I love how she explains everything, is always checking what we are doing to make sure we get the most from it. She pushes and encourages to get that last one done. She makes it fun and the hour just scoots by
Great gym
Great gym, great staff, great members!! Friendly welcoming place with some good classes and great equipment! Very good wet area with a nice pool, sauna and steam room, the ice bath has become part of my daily routine. It wakes you up for the day with a lasting buzz! Just got to get past the first 30 seconds and you’ve cracked it!!
The gym and equipment is fantastic and…
The gym and equipment is fantastic and has everything you need, after your work out it's great to relax in the pool area, with a steam room sauna, jacuzzi and ice bath.
The team, Dave, Paz, Antonia and the rest of the team are fantastic and very helpful.
Refusal to Refund Overcharge ££ by Ignoring for almost 5 months (Finally Sorted by 6 months)
From hindsight, I wish I had read all reviews here first before joining Village Gym:
I joined as Off-peak member last year, first started as 3-month with the promotion of only paying for 2 months. Then I progressed to join (extend) 12-month Off-peak, a month later I realised they made mistake and charged me more as Peak member. I kept calling the customer service, talking to gym staff and was told it would be sorted but not. After 3 months of the wrong charge, I cancelled my direct debit, only until this point someone at the Gym rang me up to say it would only be sorted if I reactivated the direct debit. On the 4th month after my inquiry, Village Gym only replied in email in early August to deny the overcharge. It is now close to 5 months since I informed them of their mistake- the Gym has obligations under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, including the requirement that services be performed with reasonable care and skill.
I am still struggling between Citizen's Advice and Resolver to raise this to Management team of Village Gym, yet of no avail. I've stopped using them already.
Massively disappointing with Village Gym.
That said, the on-site staff have been very friendly and keeping facilities clean, good job!
Update on 16/9/2026:
Huge thanks to Paul Smith the Leisure Club Manager for resolving the issues professionally, refund sorted. I also wrote to the 3rd party debt collector that the payment arrears had been a mistake and my data should be deleted as per GDPR.
Do not park your car No CCTV!. Only ANPR to fine you with.
Do not park your car at this hotel especially the rear of the Hotel, near the Disabled parking area under the bridged Accommodation as it’s not covered CCTV.
Because they have no CCTV Coverage.
On the 15/06/26 was my new car’s turn to be damaged by another Patron. We were members of the Gym, and frequently park on the grounds of the hotel.
Last year my wife’s vehicle was damaged in the same section of the carpark, they say lighting doesn’t strike twice !.
I found the other car that side swiped my new car in the carpark and got the woman’s details and registration.
I informed Reception and they said they would look at their CCTV. When they came back to me they stated they couldn’t see that section of the their own Carpark, couldn’t see the car that hit mine, when it reversed into my car and drove away.
Which is unbelievable!. At a Hotel Car Park with no operational CCTV in 2026!.
Yet if you go over 4hrs you would be charged for parking. ( ANPR Camera’s active ) at Entry and Exit
They lie to insurance companies, telling them they can’t see any accidents on their CCTV. Because basically they don’t have CCTV to check.
Interesting enough right where my car was damaged is a camera mounted on the bridge wall, Surely this would have caught it?. No because that’s the actual ANPR camera that catches you when you go over 4hours
So if you have a nice car, think twice about parking here.
They take no responsibility for parking and when other patrons damage your property they can’t even assist your Insurance company with any CCTV coverage, because there isn’t any.
On the 17/06/26 I was approached by the GM in the Lobby. This is the second time in as many months that I have raised valid issues. He really has zero empathy.
1) One issue, I raised with the hotel and spoke to him out in the Gym / changing area. Was to make him aware /Highlighting the improper usage of a high pressure car washer being used in the shower area.
Creating high level aerosol’s creating the perfect storm for legionnaires vapor risk.
Having being subjected to such a disgusting experience and exposed to such a heath risk I find unacceptable.
2) When finding damage on another of my vehicles, the second experience of carpark damage at this Hotel chain, in the same section of the hotel carpark. Seeking reasonable assistance from staff regarding the above incident.
I was spoken to unprofessionally and rudely by the General Manager and made to feel that customers are not entitled to complain.
He then proceeded to describe “that he had a little chuckle when he saw my car damage review”.
Who would be smiling if they had experienced a second vehicle within a two year period suffering damage in their overcrowded and chaotic carpark. And was covered in vaporous water which is a risk to health, whilst you were showering.
Imagine having no concept of seeing issues in the Hotel that you run, and when a customer tells you. You feel you can berate them and tell them they are wrong, questioning the validity of their genuine raised issues/complaints.
And imagine saying to the same or any customer if you’re not happy go elsewhere!.
Like what I was complaining for was unreasonable.
This remain’s unresolved as dated 20/08/26
A same level GM from
NewCastle , remotely reviewed my complaint badly. They can’t accept or apologise or deal with complaints.
Unprofessional and take no accountability. Avoid this hotel chain, they treat customers with distain. They really don’t care about anything, other than your money. Once they have that they couldn’t care less.
