We have been going to the Haycutter at…
We have been going to the Haycutter at Oxted for a number of years and we feel this is by far the best pub we have ever been to. The staff are fantastic, the food imaginative and well prepared. The pub is clean, well laid out and the toilets are so much better than most pubs.
We recently met friends at The Tally Ho in Eversley and discovered this is also a Bunnings pub. It had the same quality as the Haycutter so well done the group.
We now look out for pubs in the group wherever we go.
Mytton & Mermaid is especially accommodating
I find the many negative reviews for Brunning and Price puzzling as I and my husband have regularly dined at a handful of their sites over the past years and found that they excelled each and every time, without exception.
However I must single out their Mytton and Mermaid site as particularly worthy of praise, not only have we enjoyed each and every one of the meals we’ve enjoyed there with and without friends and family, but we’ve found the staff there especially friendly, accommodating and competent - nothing ever seems too much trouble.
So, whilst not the cheapest, our experience has been overwhelmingly that Brunning and Price’s venues offer very good value when the overall experience is considered.
That is our honest experience.
Avoid this employer
Just a warning for anyone who wants to work for this company that don’t bother!. Awful and very stressful especially if you are doing the hard graft like kitchen porter and chefs. Long hours standing no breaks only a quick eat standing for five minutes. Also waitering staff have no breaks sometimes. They also give zero hours contracts. The only ones that have the favouritism are managers.
Pity about all the dogs
Gorgeous food and charming, attentive staff. If it hadn’t been for all the dogs, I would have given it 5 stars. Their paws on the bar, their noses on food tables, dribbling on the floor, slobbering into bowls of water, barking at each other…..all unacceptable in a dining area. Such a shame, as everything else was lovely.
The Roe Deer , Wordsley
We visited for only the second time today while visiting relatives .
Absolutely love this place , the decor is fabulous , the food is amazing and the staff are brilliant .
We were served today by Gloria , who could not do enough for us , such a shame that we do not live locally .Definitely a restaurant to visit if you are in the area
Mild food poisoning: We visited the telegraph pub yesterday…
We visited the telegraph pub yesterday and I got a mild dose of food poisoning I’m still not right. My mum and I shared a portion of fish and chips. She was fine but two hours after eating I had bad tummy upset with cramps and the rest of it. We couldn’t understand why only I was affected. So it could have been the drinks as we had a Coke and Diet Coke or maybe it was the lime that was put into my Diet Coke. anyway we wanted to mention this as it was our experience. We’ve enjoyed food there on a number of different occasions and it’s always been fine

Smokey Hole with dreadful Staff
Well, I'm not surprised to find such low ratings. If you want a quiet English pub to relax with a beer. This is not the place, stay away. As standard if you politely ask others to conduct themselves with manners, you have an aggressive fight on your hands. Ask the schoolgirls who frequent the place not to smoke in the clearly marked "Do not make your stink in this area", while they sit under the signs, as all children they will do it all the more. These children will not remember this time before their lives have really begun when their smoking related illnesses strike in their later years. Their problem. The spineless staff are as low level as the clientele the place attracts and will not assist, their better class of considerate patrons, when a quiet appeal from them is all that would be required, with acres of space to smoke outside. It's just a smokey hole. No peace from it. No surprise that these lilly-livered staff fell out with the customer registering that their lemonade was flat. If you are part of the 40% of society which does not eat dead animals but ignored by the inhospitality industry, rally in support of the vegetarian who, like all vegetarians, hates mushrooms, to object to mushrooms as the only meal on the menu, every dead animals eater's idea of what vegetarians eat. As the country came out of the pandemic, when the school girls were still in primary school, these places were crying out for our money. Because the place is so dreary inside, it's dead in the winter but the staff clowns forget their regular winter patrons in the summer. As a long standing winter customer, I registered this with them last summer, despite mushrooms being the only meal without dead animal, a year ago, wasting my time. With country pubs closing down all over the country, let's hope this place is one of them for bringing it on themselves.
Worst pub experience ever
Worst pub experience ever, complained about a flat lemonade, basically was my fault it seemed, accused of being aggressive on the second time. Then threatened by a so called regular who we knew worked for them. Absolutely terrible service yet again. Won't return ever.
Change for the Better
Ok let's start. I am a vegetarian and every Brunning I go to has ONE vegetarian option on the odd occasion it might stretch to 2. And for whatever reason it always seems to be flipping mushroom based and most vegetarians I know blooming hate MUSHROOMS. Get with programme and give us veggies mire options please 🙏
Can I suggest you have a SUGGESTION box so we can shout out please.
Dairy Allergy? Preprepared dishes they won't adapt to accommodate you
went to Sutton Hall, Macclesfield.
I have a dairy allergy. I don't choose to have it.
I go out for dinner as a treat.
Lovely staff. However a severely limited option for dairy allergies ( and I guess vegans) Meals are clearly pre-prepared so cannot be adapted. At these prices I absolutely would not expect pre prepared food. Even the fish cakes apparently..the steak, sea bass....there was no option to adapt. I didn't want to eat something I wouldn't choose otherwise, something I didn't want just for the sake of eating. That's not a treat out.
So despite the lovely environment and the excellent staff, we left, quick call to our local pub who cooked me sea bass, adapting their dish to dairy free. For roughly £5 less. And it was delicious.
The Old Hall Sandach
The Old Hall Sandach. Re Xmas day dinner £100 per head. Absolutely ruined our Xmas day the food was barely warm and awful. The soup was not as described it was little more than a quarter of an inch of brown water. The potatoes were undercooked the vegetables were so unpleasant we couldn’t eat them. The only things warm about our food was the barely warm plates. Personally I would have preferred to eat the plate than the meal. No complaint about the serving staff they did their best. It’s just a shame about the kitchen I assume the chefs had taken the day off?
I have been various times to Worsley…
I have been various times to Worsley Old Hall, The Old Hall at Sandbach & Haighton Manor Preston. Always had good service over the years & I would not of returned if I did not like my experience of the food, venue etc
Celiacs can eat at a Brunning & Price restaurant with confidence.
I have now eaten at 3 Brunning & Price restaurants and found the gluten free options are excellent. Particularly the pies and quiches are some of the best I have tasted. I’m a Celiac and any trace of gluten makes me very ill but I’m totally confident that eating at a Brunning & Price restaurant I can enjoy a great meal and not worry. Thanks Linda
Lite bite at the Mytton and Mermaid…
We visited the Mytton and Mermaid restaurant just outside Shrewsbury earlier today for some lunch as it was my partners birthday. It was the first time we had been there. We arrived and there were quite a few people there with a number of tables already reserved. We found a table that was suitable for us and sat down. No one came over to us so I got up and grabbed some menus. My partner asked at the bar if there was a Specials menu and was sarcastically told by a member of staff that all the food there was special.. basically that there was no Specials menu!!!
The environment was very noisy considering it was by no means full and some of the lighting over the tables so low and bright that it wasn’t comfortable to sit there. We just wanted a light bite for lunch but there was limited choice and some of the prices were as much as you pay for a main course in other places. We decided to leave and go to another pub nearby that we knew we would get good food at reasonable prices.
I doubt we will be returning any time soon!!
I left half of my sirloin steak because…
The Pheasant, Buckland - I left half of my sirloin steak because I found it chewy and I even gagged a couple of times. I asked my husband if he wanted my leftovers as he’s a bit of a 'hoover upper' where food is concerned. Without mentioning anything to him about why I left the steak, he stated ‘blimey - it’s a bit chewy’ and even he had to pull out chewed steak from his mouth and discard it. I don’t expect to pay over £30 for tough, chewy meat and I do expect to see a Portobello Mushroom on my plate especially as its advertised on the menu but my plate was devoid of a mushroom. Very disappointed with tonight’s offering.🥺
The Plough and Harrow Malvern
The Plough and Harrow Malvern
We chose to come here before we were due to attend an event in the area and considering that we often go to your sister pub (Arrow Mill) and have always received excellent service and food there, we were so disappointed that we got neither from here!
When our order was taken I asked if there was mushrooms in the beef rigatoni the waitress said she didn’t know and would ask for me however never came back to let me know so I presumed that there wasn’t. One hour then passed so I asked her how much longer our food is expected to be as we now only had half an hour to get to our event, only to find out that our order hadn’t even been put through. The waitress apologised profusely and told us our food would be with us in precisely 6 minutes all awhile we were sat there without any drinks nor cutlery. Our food eventually came boiling hot and had to wait for her to stop chatting to another waitress before our cutlery arrived (without napkins had to get some off a neighbouring table) still no offer for drinks.
As we were now in a rush to eat we both burnt our mouths. I wish we had just left after finding out our order hadn’t been put through because the beef rigatoni was disgusting and full of fat and gristle. After finishing what was edible we stood up waiting for the bill after being passed and ignored by the waitress who forgot our order so I had to go and track down another waitress who couldn’t of cared less when I explained how terrible the service and my food was, all I got back from her was that she’d pass it on.
I’ve never left anywhere feeling so ripped off and disappointed more than I have done here!
The Aspinall Arms, Whalley TERRIBLE FOOD
I've been a customer of The Aspinall Arms for 30 years but no more. I even stayed there for 3 months when I relocated in 2005.
When a menu says "Pan-fried halibut with lobster tortellini" who would expect to get just one, small singular piece of tortellini when paying £23.95. With it was a teaspoon of Samphire, and a small piece of fish with lobster(so it said) bisque.
I had a tiny piece of pollock (not an expensive fish so surprised it was so tiny) with 3x 1cm square saffron potatoes which were as hard as bullets. The tablespoon of 'clam and mussel chowder' tasted like shop bought hollandaise sauce. Assuming it was the manager (she didn't introduce herself) she tried, unconvincingly to justify the appalling food in a rude manner. Apparently the Salmon Caviar is a very expensive ingredient (£7.50 for 50g at Ocado) the meal had about 8 pieces - probably no more than 5g) Hopefully The Aspinall will change hands again soon, until then it is definitely a place to avoid, after all there are no shortage of good places to eat in the surrounding area.
My Mum’s walked at Haighton Manor Preston
This was my Mum’s wake at Haighton Manor in Preston.
The venue and staff were great, however we were very disappointed with the food provided. The sandwiches were like ‘dockers butties’ stale and presented with no finesse. We were 30 minutes later than expected but I thought with the invention of cling film they could have stayed fresh!! There were two bowls of ‘sad’ salad and two/three dishes of hot chips ( more chips were brought on request). We asked for catering for 45 and only 40 were forthcoming.
I know we chose the cheapest option but at £13:50 a head I do believe they could do much better.
First visit to Haighton manor in…
First visit to Haighton manor in Preston, highly recommended this place. Upon arrival staff were warm, friendly and helpful. The place was toasty and warm, and has a lovely rustic feel. Our food was delivered promptly and was without fault. Little shoutout to our waitress Megan who attend to our every need. We will definitely be returning to Haighton manor for more meals!
