The FMB markets itself as a consumer safeguard, yet its funding, incentives, and processes often align more closely with the builders than with the clients who rely on the badge.

My experience with the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has been extremely disappointing, and I feel it’s important to warn other homeowners before they rely on the FMB badge for reassurance.

Many of the glowing reviews for FMB‑registered builders come from members who prominently display the logo on their websites. In my case, the membership badge gave a false sense of security. The vetting appears superficial, not regularly updated, and does not guarantee that a builder follows the guidelines or has a better track record than a non‑member.

When issues arose with my “Master Builder,” I attempted to use the FMB dispute process. Unfortunately, the builder went into liquidation before even responding to the FMB. The FMB gives builders two weeks to reply in a dispute, leaving customers stuck in limbo with unfinished work and no meaningful support. Once the builder collapses, the FMB offers no protection or recourse.

What became clear is that the FMB is a trade association, funded by builders, and its processes seem to reflect that. In my experience, it offered no practical protection for the client and no enforceable standards. The system feels fundamentally biased toward the builder rather than the homeowner who trusts the badge.

Based on my experience, I would strongly caution anyone against assuming that FMB membership provides real assurance, guarantees, or accountability. It did none of those things for me.
