Not an ideal place to visit for someone…
Not an ideal place to visit for someone with mobility issues. If you use a rollator it is difficult to negotiate the many slopes. Could not find disabled loo.
Decided not to even bother trying the restaurant. Won't be revisiting I'm afraid.

Don’t use the restaurant if you are hungry 40min wait and drinks cold by then. Surly waitress would not refresh our pot of tea. Said everyone else has to wait too …really….
Pull your socks up Gates
Travelled over an hour to get here
Travelled over an hour to get here. Great garden centre with plenty of interesting stock. Unfortunately, went to the cafe for a drink. Ordered two coffees and a sandwich for our grandchild and been told will be brought to the table - cannot collect them ourselves. Been waiting over half an hour now - have been told by staff that it will be another 15 minutes before we get them. This is seriously out of order so my recommendation is - go to the garden centre but bring your own food and drink DO NOT BOTHER WITH THE CAFE.
My coffee has arrived!!!! Waitress tells me we were lucky not to have ordered food - that is over an hour’s wait - ridiculous!!!!! And the sandwich was missing so my wife has gone to chase it up.. POOR, POOR, POOR
No function to leave feedback on their website - deliberate?
Good breakfast.
Good breakfast.. in the courtyard coffee shop... but the bill was wrong .. although we questioned it but not listened to frankly... now back and have done the maths and clearly it was.. need to know where to talk about this as there doesn't appear to be a link .. or we wouldn't have come on here to do this .. have visited gates since they had a shed in the corner yea .. now it's vast so we think its only proper to have a link and explanation.
Very disappointing service in the coffee shop.
After spending the afternoon shopping in the Gates Garden Centre (and spending rather a lot of money) we decided to have a coffee & snack in The Coffee Shop, this was very disappointing, it was about 3.15pm on Sunday, we counted 7 staff either behind or in front of the counter, after about 15 mins.of waiting for 2 coffee's we had to ask how much longer would the wait be, they didn't know! the young person who took our order was behind the counter so my daughter actually asked her, she didn't seem to have a clue that people were waiting. While we continued to wait for our coffee's we became aware of other tables experiencing the same. It was almost 4pm by now so I asked one of the staff what time were they closing, she said she didn't know! Staff lacked any form of leadership, very disappointing & let down for such a great garden centre.
The site itself is beautiful however
Sadly the only thing letting Gates Garden centre down is it's location, the roads are atrocious with no signs for sharp corners and the speed limits for these road bordering on dangerous. The centre itself however is beautiful with great attention to detail. The site itself is massive so would suggest they invest in some electric carts for people with mobility problems.
Disappointed!
Can’t believe that a garden centre of this size isn’t dog friendly… been in the Peak District for a week and having been to Gates before wanted to visit on our way back home to Lincolnshire… no signs that dogs not allowed … even had dog bowls of water outside the front doors?!
We had no problems in the Peak District, in fact most places were happy to cater to doggy people.
If you are a doggy person the last thing you would do would be to leave your dog in a car…which the people at Gates suggested …. NEVER!!!!
If you are a doggy person then your dog is usually well trained and you would respect the surroundings you are in accordingly.
Come into the 21st century Gates!
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS GARDEN CENTRE
Purchased an LED lamp for my fireplace but cable too short and putting an extension on would not be a safe option. Have just been advised by Customer Services that as the item is not faulty it cannot be returned for refund nor can I get a credit note.
Will certainly advise everyone to avoid this garden centre in case you buy something for a present which is of no use to anyone in case they do not like it.

Great 85th birthday for my mum today at Gates, the restaurant had an adjusted menu due to the heat to protect the kitchen staff which shows excellent staff care and the replacement menu was fab 👌 All staff were really great and made it a special day for my Mum
Dogs not allowed
Dogs not allowed! In a garden centre? Why? Complete crap.
Disappointed really.
Overall a good place and a great selection of plants but recently had a very poor experience regarding customer service, I use to buy my plants regularly from here, more than once or twice a month! Now I will not be visiting anymore. I purchased a witch Hazel tree for £149.99 and for whatever reason had died (not due to neglect). I had misplaced the receipt unfortunately but they will not refund or exchange at all, even though I have proof via a bank statement. A little bit upset as I recommended this place to many friends and even brought a few to buy plants for their own garden. I’d say this is my personal experience with the place and is not representative of every time but regardless I am disappointed and do not have confidence in making future purchases in case a similar thing happens!

Staff are always happy to help and proactive in both the garden centre and farm shop. never had a bad experience since I've been visiting there.
Inconsiderate staff
My parents went there for lunch on Sunday 7 November with my disabled mum who has walking difficulties and my elderly nan. After sitting at a table they were told by a member of staff that we had entered through the wrong door and had to go outside queue again. My parents tried to explain that there was no sign on the door they entered but the rude member of staff would not listen and insisted my disabled mum and elderly nan go outside and enter through a different door. My family regularly goes here for lunch but will not be going again after this incident.
Perfect service from Gates Garden Centre
After purchasing garden furniture for many years from Gates, I have always been looked after and served well.
I had an issue with a silly little problem with my parasol, so decided to ask for advice from Gates furniture department. The result came as rather a shock, as no sooner had I explained the problem a member of staff was on the case. Within a couple of days, Jack the member had the problem sorted and a replacement parasol on the way.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gates, but especially Jack for arranging everything. Thank you for all you help.
Support your local retailers, you need them more these days than ever before.
staff got sacked for trying to help a family of cats
So as Gates have blocked me from commenting i just put it out here for you all to decide if this is the place you want to spend your hard earnt money..
A young lad contacted a rescuer as he was concerned about a feral mamma cat with kittens( done had died) well when the rescuer came to Gates they turned her help down and then rspsa got involed but they did nothing to help and on top of it all the young lad got sacked...
The ugly side of gates garden centre…
The ugly side of gates garden centre management and owners
This is going to be a long one!
On Thursday morning a had a call from a member of staff from a local garden centre (GATES) , he was really concerned as living outside the back of the kitchens there were 2 small kittens & mum hadn't been seen for 3/4 days. He had also found the remains of a 3rd😪.
He asked if I'd be able to help trap them & take them into foster care.
I tried to call GATES but there was an issue with the fone lines, so a friend & i went to GATES with a humane cat trap, basket , food & gloves.
On arrival at GATES we headed to the restaurant & approached a member of staff that turned out to be the manager Mark. Unfortunately he wasn't very accommodating & said he hadn't decided what to do about the kittens, mum cat had previously had lots of litters but was NOT their cat & he'd have to speak to the owner Jack. So I gave him my card & said I'd be around for an hour if he'd like to contact me before I left?
As it turns out there's no fone signal in gates so I had to go back.
On my return I spoke to another lad who was very polite but informed me that the kittens were ok way they were.... they'd survive ok out side ! I did the usual chat about kittens having kittens & offered to get mum ( if/when she turned up) neutered & returned at no cost to them but the kittens needed help now & I'd be happy to trap them. But they said no.
So I had to walk away😪
I had to inform the lad of their decision & he said he would try to talk to his manager.
Yesterday I had a text from the lad to say he had been sacked for misconduct, but given no explanation as to what he had done. He had never been in trouble at work before .
As you can imagine I blew a gasket & called GATES. I explained the situation to another manager Claire & said I felt the situation was now out of hand & the lad had called out of concern for the kittens & now he was sacked there would be no one to feed them?! She said she would call me back when she had spoke to someone about the situation.
And she did, with a totally different attitude.... to say she was rude was an understatement. They were not impressed that after turning down my offer of help the lad had involved the RSPCA.
And I'm pleased he did!
I have also spoken to the RSPCA inspector! It's in there hands now & it's not like they don't have enough on their plates with the post pandemic situation?
There has long been a problem with feral & stray cats on the road to the garden centre in Cold Overton & over the years several rescue groups have tried to help but as long as people have this attitude to trapping & neutering stray & feral cats it's never going to be solved ?
That poor mum cat will go on having more kittens & the kittens may not survive?
animal abusers
animal abusers. They have feral cats that they refuse anyone to allow to help and sack staff that speak out
Ordered garden lounger yesterday
Ordered garden lounger yesterday, and was surprised to receive it today. Delighted with both the quality of the product, and the efficiency of the service
My thanks to all concerned
How it should be done.
2 X Quest Pro Relax Chairs.
It took 20 minutes to order online, pay and receive a tracking number. They turned up the following day, bang on time. I’ve just spent a week trying to get same order from another company (see review). I highly recommend Gates as they seem to know how this whole online thing works. Here Endeth the lesson.
