I purchased a 2015 Toyota Yaris for…
I purchased a 2015 Toyota Yaris for £7,250 from Gerry Hill Car Sales. I am writing this review because I think prospective customers should know my experience from the initial test drive through to the after-sales service I have received.
The important point is that the main problems I have complained about did not simply develop months after I bought an 11-year-old car.
When I originally viewed the Yaris, there was already evidence of water ingress in the rear. During my test drive with Dino, I also noticed a slight judder while driving. I raised these issues before agreeing to buy the car and was assured they would be looked at and sorted before collection.
I collected the vehicle believing this had been done.
Unfortunately, within a very short period it became clear that the water leak was still present and the judder remained. I also developed a problem with the key fob and, within days, the tyre-pressure warning light was intermittently coming on. When I raised the tyre-pressure warning, I was told the fuse could simply be removed because these systems can be annoying.
The Yaris has subsequently been returned to the dealership three times and has spent approximately seven weeks with them in total.
The water leak and key-fob issue were eventually dealt with, but the juddering problem continued. I specifically asked for the spark plugs and coil packs to be investigated and also raised the exhaust as something that should be checked. At one stage fuel-system cleaner was put into the vehicle. I did not accept that as an adequate diagnosis, and I was subsequently told that a spark plug had been identified as faulty.
Despite all these visits and the amount of time the dealership has had the car, I have not been provided with invoices or written documentation detailing all the work that has been carried out.
Things became even more frustrating when I left a public review. Gerry Hill responded publicly asking me to contact them and bring the Yaris back so that they could investigate it further.
I did exactly that.
I telephoned their published number on Friday 25 September. The person I spoke to did not know what I was referring to but said he would look into it and somebody would get back to me. Because it was Friday, I specifically said I was happy to wait until Monday.
Nobody called.
I therefore telephoned again on Tuesday 29 September and once again spoke to them and was told somebody would get back to me.
Again, I received no promised return call.
When a family member subsequently posted a review about the customer service, Gerry Hill publicly stated that they had checked their records and could find no record of the calls concerning my Yaris.
Fortunately, I have retained my phone records.
They show calls to 01685 872022 on Friday 25 September at 15:54 and 15:57, with the connected call lasting 1 minute 38 seconds, followed by another call to the same number on Tuesday 29 September at 16:06 lasting 4 minutes 13 seconds.
So there is no ambiguity from my side about whether those calls were made. I have the call logs.
I fully accept that this is an older used vehicle. I never expected an 11-year-old Yaris to be a brand-new car, nor do I expect an older vehicle never to develop a fault.
What I did expect, having paid £7,250 to a motor dealer, was for problems I specifically identified before purchasing the vehicle, and which I was told would be rectified before collection, to actually be rectified. I also expected reasonable communication when those problems continued.
The car going back three times, approximately seven weeks in their possession, an unresolved judder and then repeatedly having to chase promised telephone calls has left me extremely disappointed with the entire experience.
Based solely on my own experience, particularly the after-sales communication and handling of the outstanding problem, I could not recommend this dealership.
