It's all in one hand to learn and grow, and this university provides resources.

My experience living in the University of Hertfordshire halls has been extremely distressing, not just because of other residents, but because of systemic mismanagement and a complete failure of their Residence Life Department.

A significant and ongoing issue is unchecked multi-occupancy. One student routinely rents single rooms and then shares with non-students, sometimes several at a time. Kitchens are monopolised nightly by 6–7 people, often non-residents, making it impossible for others to cook or even access basic facilities. Once this was reported, management did nothing to stop it and instead penalised the person who reported it.

The physical facilities are entirely inadequate for the number of people effectively using them. Up to eight students share kitchens with only two hobs and a single tap, yet the University charges an extortionate level of rent. Good luck using the kitchen when it is hogged every night by large groups with no enforcement.

Safeguarding is another serious concern. Death threats and harassment were not taken seriously, and reports were dismissed rather than investigated. There is also a visible and ongoing issue with weed smoking and drug use across campus, alongside reports of harassment towards residents, none of which appear to be addressed meaningfully. The response from Residence Life has consistently been dismissive.

What is most disturbing is the culture around reporting. Students who raise concerns are treated as the problem, questioned about why they are “the only one complaining,” and made to feel intimidated rather than supported. The message is clear: stay quiet, keep paying rent, and cope.

For accommodation marketed as premium student housing, this level of neglect is unacceptable. Safety, fairness, and basic living standards should not be optional extras.

I strongly advise prospective students to think carefully before choosing halls and to document everything from day one. Once issues arise, meaningful support is challenging to obtain.

Unreliable, sexist, completely unprofessional. Interest was only shown to the male students and the female students were not taken seriously and simply ignored.
Our entire year was given a printed out McDonalds application form from our main VFX lecturer, Mark W.
Telling us we wouldn’t achieve anything more than that. Good to know my 27k was well spent on hiring people who are completely disrespectful and have been out of the industry for years so they have no idea what is even going on.
Last year of the old halls, were riddled with stains, vomited covered carpets every Saturday night.

It’s a 20-25 min walk to train station, no high street or shops apart from the Galleria and Asda.
You're literally in the middle of nowhere.
If you’re looking to go into VFX, you’re better off saving your money. Not worth a penny.

I had a very good experience studying at the University of Hertfordshire. The lecturers were knowledgeable and supportive, and they encouraged students to ask questions and develop great thinking. The course content was well structured and helped me build both theoretical and practical knowledge.

Computer Science graduate, class of 98. Just had the best experience at Harts University. It was a fantastic 3 years of my life; the friends I made, the good times and parties, learned a lot too! Great resources, awesome tuition. I can highly recommend for anyone looking at technology degree. Close enough to London to enjoy without the financial burden!

The tutors are very helpful and make time for a one-to-one when you need them. They are also very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their subject. The additional help from the team, e.g. the essay writing specialists, is also extremely useful.

Picking up packages is suppose to be normal and easy. BUT I hate how the fact that the employee/s not all but some majority of the younger staff receptionist always somehow give of an annoyed attitude or some shi wrong with them like they hate their job or something 😭 🙏. Neither the less, they have to realize that it's their damn job to do it. Doesn't matter if it's a lot of work or if you're just burning out. YOU SIGNED UP FOR THIS. You do NOT have to stay here don't bring your emotions to a work space leave that shi at home. People have to stop trying to act like a baby and be babied. They signed up for a job to work. Whilst we basically pay for their bills as we literally pay for school fees and all that so that goes where? to the SCHOOL which goes to THE STAFFS/WORKERS.

Those who have never learned to read people must learn to understand without words.thats why i put just scale

Accomodation is a high quality on College Lane and is well maintained. School of Education has experienced tutors. Lots of opportunities with the SU and lots of societies to join. Paid roles like School Conmunity Organiser and volunteers. Be careful with messy flatmates as you will get fined. Shuttle bus is ok when not peak times. Transport links and surrounding area, only 10 minutes walk for shopping, restaurants and cinema. Only negative is they closed the only pub on campus, so not many places to go on campus.

If you choose to use Herts sports village facilities as a resident of Hatfield -
I used to use here for swimming , regularly , a few times a week , never again !!
July - took my grandchildren swimming , also using the cafe there beforehand , car park was packed , place was packed , despite me having a disabled blue badge on show , apparently I was 9 minutes 1 second after the 2 hours allowed , the first I knew of this was when in September I received a fine through the post for a charge of £150 …….
Between July - September I received no notification in the post , there was no photographic evidence with it , I still have not received any evidence of this with time stamps , I contacted a duty manager at sports village who tried to help me by emailing the uni parking team , parking team refused to help , I’ve all the emails as I was cc’d into them , actually the enforcement company say 9 minutes 1 second , the uni parking team giving a completely different time span , neither company wanting to give me photos with time stamps , despite me saying all of the above , I’ve also worked in previous jobs where I have had the authority within my role to use my discretion to cancel these parking tickets so I know the parking team at the uni could have done this , in fact any company who uses an outside car parking company are able to cancel your ticket if they value your custom …….
So a person registered disabled , with a blue badge showing , who had to park further away due to school holidays , treating grandchildren in the cafe before their swimming session , due to changing rooms after being very busy , due to not being able to walk far or fast as waiting for a knee replacement ,

COUNCIL TAX EXEMPTION CERTIFICATES

I have raised the fact with Ask Herts several times that the Council Tax Exemption Certificates system is not fit for purpose at University of Hertfordshire for students that live off campus. I have checked the website and nothing has changed and this needs to be changed straight away as I know that many students will be charged Council Tax and have trouble getting this refunded.

The current system only provides Council Tax Exemption Certificates for the current year of study. My son who is now in his third year at the University rented a house in Hatfield with 4 of his friends for the second year between September 2024 and August 2025. They were charged Council Tax for the first few weeks of September and again for the summer months. I had to advocate for them and it took me 7 months and 23 telephone calls, totalling approximately 12 hours on.the telephone to get the refunds for the first bill they had to pay and to get the second bill stopped and eventually cancelled. The Council told me they regularly don't receive correct additional certificates when they are requested from the University and several members of staff in The Council Tax Department told me a lot of students are incorrectly charged Council Tax and have trouble getting this money back. This clearly needs sorting out straight away.

My experience with their admissions team has been awful - re: postgrad programmes.
This university also has either institutional imposter syndrome or delusions of grandeur.I am still trying to ascertain which of these titles is more apt.
They treat you as if they are doing you a favour by allowing you to apply. It's extraordinary.

In this place I made friends for life, stories too embarrassing to share and I met myself 10x over. It’s a cultural reset with people from around the world, and they have so many programs to actually send you around the world too! Their staff team and wellbeing services seen my through my harder parts. Their festivities and sports made every day enjoyable! The classrooms are renovated and the teachers are kind! Best 4 years of my life so far.. But hey the best is always yet to come :)

University of Hertfordshire isn’t the school for Lazy people who just wants to breeze through school! You will gain access to the best of educators and experts in your field….

It was well organised and clearly set out so everything was easy to find. However, the prices were EXTORTIONATE!! 4 digital photos cost over £100 and that’s not even considering the hour long queue we had to wait in before having photos taken. Because the queues were so long, it also meant that we could not go up to the forum to get our complimentary drink or relax upstairs. We headed to the forum at 17:30 as soon as photos were finished but got refused entry because the area was now closed (even though on the email we received it said the forum area was open until 18:00). It put a damper on what was supposed to be a celebratory day to commemorate the past 3 years of hard work and thousands of pounds spent on my education just to be stuck in a queue all day and turned away for our complimentary drink.
The ceremony itself was well done at the cathedral and it was also well-organised. But the whole lead up on campus did mean that the graduation day overall left me feeling underwhelmed and a bit bitter of a way to remember my time here

My experience has been wonderful. I never thought I'd do a Masters, but the teaching team have been incredibly supportive
