We had a family dinner at Hevva on 30th December 2023 - me, my three grown-up kids, plus one in-law. It was great: Hevva is quite small but we went early so we had the place to ourselves to start with. Service was attentive and enthusiastic. The food was fantastic: various sorts of achingly fresh fish and shellfish. A crab rarebit - can't tell you what that was like because it disappeared too fast for me to steal any. Plaice - yum. Huge, which is why I got to try it. And what I had - mussels mariniere. This was truly gobsmacking because the mussels were sweet. Why? I wondered. Well because they were fished this morning, explained the maitre d' casually.
I lost a few mussels (to offspring) but it was OK because the portion was so big. Nice white wine - a carafe of Sauternes I think. One son had a saffron bread and butter pudding but everyone else was too full.
I love mussels and often have them and these were the best mussels I have ever tasted. Bar none.
