Fabulous lava lamps, amazing company.

Mathmos lava lamps are beautiful and good quality. I’ve ordered from them online a few times and received my orders quickly and in perfect condition. When one order didn’t arrive as it had been damaged in the post their helpful customer service quickly replaced my order.
I thought I couldn’t love this company more but today I visited the showroom at their factory in Poole for the first time and spoke to quite a few members of staff who made us feel very welcome and went above and beyond to allow both myself and my child to look around the showroom and take photos and videos of all the lamps on display and to help me buy the lamps I wanted with the utmost patience whilst I took the time to decide. Everyone is so friendly and helpful here and in total I now own 6 of their lava lamps and 4 spare bottles so I think you could say I’m becoming a bit of a fan.

Faded lava lamp

I’m pretty disappointed with my experience with Mathmos.

I bought a lava lamp just over a year ago and the colour has already started fading quite badly, which isn’t what you would expect from a product at this price point. The issue actually started a few months ago, but by the time I got around to contacting them, I had just fallen outside of their warranty period.

What makes it more frustrating is that I had assumed there was a two year warranty, but this only applies if you buy directly from them. Because I purchased through Amazon, I wasn’t covered in the same way, which isn’t made particularly clear.

I accepted that I was technically outside of the warranty and even offered to buy a replacement bottle, but simply asked if they could offer any kind of goodwill discount given how close I was to the warranty period. This was completely refused with no flexibility at all.

The response felt quite rigid and not very customer focused. For a premium brand, I expected better product longevity and at least a bit of understanding when a customer is willing to spend more despite an issue.

Tumbleweed from customer service

Ordered a Neo and some bulbs, and it hasn’t turned up. Not a problem in itself as I only ordered 9 days ago, but the lack of communication since the order is a bit worrying. DPD say they haven’t received the parcel at all, despite Mathmos themselves saying the order is “complete” a week ago. I have heard nothing back from customer service despite repeatedly contacting them about it. I am concerned that this order won’t be fulfilled, and have now also heard a lot about the lamps’ components not fitting together properly and bulbs being unreliable. So I am regretting this purchase before it has even arrived! It was supposed to be a gift for my partner but I am now worried it won’t even show up in time for their birthday, despite me putting the order in a good 6 weeks beforehand. Very concerning and also a shame, as I had the Blimp as a kid and loved it, and thought the brand had a better rep than it seems to these days.

Top ondersteuning

Na bijna 2 jaar met veel plezier genoten te hebben van mijn Mathmos raket lavalamp, ging mijn lamp niet meer aan. Zonder enige probleem kreeg ik een nieuwe lamp opgestuurd. Helaas liep ik tegen een ander probleem aan (buiten mijn garantieperiode om) en hebben ze aangeboden om wéér een vervangende lamp te sturen. Ze wilden graag de lamp teruggestuurd hebben om te onderzoeken wat de oorzaak van het probleem is. De klantenservice is top en ze zijn onwijs behulpzaam in het uitzoeken van wat het probleem is en ondertussen een alternatief aan te bieden. Dankzij deze ondersteuning en snelle klantenservice ben ik een ontzettend tevreden klant. Het is voor mij duidelijk dat kwaliteit voorop staat binnen het bedrijf en ze daarnaast er alles aan doen om de klant te ondersteunen.

Lampen ganz nett - Service enttäuschend

Lampen ganz nett, Service unterdurchschnittlich

Ich habe zwei Astro Lavalampen bestellt.
Die Vinyl sieht gut aus, bei der regulären in der Farbe Copper ist die Basis krumm oder instabil so dass die Flasche nicht gerade steht. Sie lässt sich zwar einigermaßen ausrichten, darf dann aber nicht berührt werden sonst verrutscht sie wieder. Das beeinträchtigt nicht die Funktion, aber in der hohen Preisklasse hätte ich mir eine bessere Qualität gewünscht.
Das Glas der Flaschen hat einige Einschlüsse was vor allem bei der klaren Flüssigkeit sehr auffällig und störend ist.

Meine Reklamation zur Basis wurde damit kommentiert dass ich die Flasche wenn sie mal gerade steht eben nicht berühren soll.
Keine Aussage zur schlechteren Qualität gegenüber der Vinyl Version.
Eine Rücksendung müsste auf eigene Kosten erfolgen.
Ein Umtausch ohne zusätzliche Kosten oder ein Preisnachlass wurden nicht angeboten.

125 Euro sind bei einer Lavalampe offensichtlich nicht genug für ein makelloses Exemplar. Rückblickend wäre eine Lampe für 25 Euro vermutlich die weniger enttäuschende Wahl.

My son bought me a candle powered lava…

My son bought me a candle powered lava lamp for my birthday. Also bought a box of Mathmos candles. They made the lava pop and were too powerful. The bottle then didn’t work properly so Mathmos sent me a replacement bottle. The first time I used it with a normal tea light candle the entire thing exploded; sending hot lava all over my unit and the floor. Thank god my small grandchildren were nowhere near. I will be asking for a full refund. This is dangerous and definitely not fit for purpose. I am disappointed and angry.

Don’t feel valued as a loyal customer

The service is always very mediocre, which is surprising for a premium British brand (or a business purporting to be). Having had multiple Mathmos products through my life, I was one of the first to order a £300 giant Rokit lamp. I reported on arrival that the bottle sat wobbly in the base but I imagined there wasn’t much they could do. A week or so ago I noticed during an unboxing video of the product that it comes with an additional metal ring to support the bottle - the problem I was experiencing. I asked if mine was missing this on delivery or it was a new addition to solve the problem I reported - no one got back to me via email so I called but the advisor wasn’t sure. I finally received a response to my email advising that I could order one for £10. I reluctantly did so still not being quite sure if mine was missing, and after two chasers throughout the course of this week I have finally received a tracking number. After another expense then, I am sure that this will solve the design flaw on this £300 ornamental lamp.

Unterirdischer Kundenservice

Analog zu den vorangegangenen Bewertungen habe ich leider eine sehr ähnliche Erfahrung mit Mathmos gemacht. Ich habe zwei Lampen bestellt, beide Kartons waren äußerlich unbeschädigt. Beim Auspacken stellte sich jedoch heraus, dass die Glasflaschen deutliche Beschädigungen sowie zahlreiche Einschlüsse im Glas aufwiesen.

Auf meine Reklamation hin antwortete mir eine Dame aus dem Kundenservice. Trotz bereits beigefügter Fotos, die die Mängel eindeutig dokumentierten, wurde ich zusätzlich aufgefordert, weitere Videos aufzunehmen und einzureichen. Inhaltlich wurde auf den eigentlichen Mangel nicht eingegangen. Die Beschädigungen bzw. Einschlüsse wurden lediglich als „normale Produktionsabweichungen“ deklariert und damit als nicht umtauschbarer Mangel abgetan. Dass dieses Geschäftsgebahren weder rechtens noch nachvollziehbar ist, da es sich klar um Qualitätsmängel handelt, sollte jedem Laien klar sein.

Für einen Designlampenhersteller ist ein solches Qualitätsniveau sowie der Umgang mit berechtigten Reklamationen ein Armutszeugnis.

Es entsteht leider der Eindruck, dass hier systematisch fehlerhafte Ware an Kunden ausgeliefert wird. Die zahlreichen negativen Berichte auf dieser Seite bestätigen diesen Eindruck zusätzlich. Aus meiner Sicht ist dieses Vorgehen ein Fall für den Verbraucherschutz.

Sehr enttäuschend – sowohl hinsichtlich der Produktqualität als auch im Umgang mit berechtigten Reklamationen.

Amazing Service

Produkte gut, service schlecht

Produkte sind gut, allerdings lässt der Kundenservice massiv zu wünschen übrig. Ich habe bereits ein Abständen von Wochen E-Mails geschrieben, um eine Rechnung zu erhalten. Keine Antwort. Auch auf der Hotline nimmt keiner den Hörer ab.

Terrible customer service

Terrible customer service - very disappointed .I have always generally been very happy with my lava lamp however when my old lamp gave up the ghost I purchased a new one.
I had previously bulk bought a load of bulbs for my old lamp which now do not fit the new lamp. When I spoke to customer service about it about exchanging my old bulbs for new ones or returning the new lamp for one that accepts the old bulbs.
They basically told me tough it’s outside the return window for your old bulbs and you can return your lamp if you want (which I didn’t want to do) as they don’t make them with the old bulbs anymore so tough luck. I explained the fact they changed the bulbs wasn’t my fault but they weren’t interested. I would have expected some understanding or gesture of good will or a pack of complimentary bulbs but they didn’t care. Very sad…

Our returns policy applies within a set timeframe. As the bulbs were purchased a significant time ago and outside this period, we were unable to offer a return under our policy on this occasion. Mooi maar veel fabricage mankementen

Hoewel mathmos astro lampen er mooi uitzien vind ik de levensduur voor de prijs aan de matige kant. Mijn violet/paarse fles was na twee jaar “op” en de plum ging nog korter mee. Ook de halogeen lampjes moet ik meerdere keren per jaar vervangen. Maar als ze het doen zijn ze wel heel erg mooi.

De navul flessen zijn tot nu toe ronduit slecht, bestelde roze en geel clear. De gele had wax op het glas en de roze blijft op de bodem van de fles liggen. Via de klantenservice (die tot nu toe heel vriendelijk is) twee nieuwe flessen gehad en daarvan is de gele goed. Helaas doet deze roze fles het ook niet. De coils op de bodem zijn te groot en ik vermoed dat daardoor de wax niet goed warm wordt. Ik heb nu weer de klantenservice om hulp gevraagd.

Great customer support post-purchase

I’ve had nothing but great experiences with Mathmos customer support. I have a large number of their lamps, and their representatives were quick to reply to my e-mails and help me on both occassions when the delivered lamps had issues. Love their products and their customer service — I hope they keep making great lamps for many more decades.
