An agency you should avoid

An agency you should avoid. At the beginning of our contact, I specified that I wanted to rent and pay a deposit, but they selected the "no deposit option" for me to pay them a monthly fee. I have now terminated my contract with them and am having problems getting my deposit back. They are looking for all kinds of reasons to charge me extra. They said they found a problem with the refrigerator and it will cost me £160 to repair, and a similar refrigerator costs about £100-120 new. I cleaned everything impeccably, and they are asking me for money for another cleaning and moth treatment. They were not interested in contacting me after check-out to present the situation to me. However, I have never seen this report. I contacted them three times in three weeks, and they barely responded. I recommend you avoid this agency.

It was nice to know I had a direct point of call when dealing with any issues such as my end of tenancy, as it made the process much smoother.

I spoke with Kaitlyn Young regarding an urgent leak that needed to be attended to as soon as possible, although this was not a rented property that Kaitlyn dealt with, she was dedicated, understanding and took the time to help me with the issue at hand. She's truly an asset to the team, thank you again!

Lucas a very helpful estate agent

Fantastic Estate Agents

We were with a different estate agent who didn’t do much. As soon as we moved over to romans everything fell into place in terms of selling and purchasing.

I would like to say a special thanks to Ben Plowman for getting our transaction over the line. He has been so helpful and I would absolutely recommend this branch. Also thank you to Jay Fennell who sold our place and found our dream home!

Great experience with romans and Ben…

Great experience with romans and Ben the manager at the Basingstoke site was amazing. Moving home can be stressful and he made the process as simple and as easy as it good be, he has the ability to communicate the facts clearly and with empathy a skill set that is difficult to have, highly recommend this estate agents.

I rented a property through Romans.... Bad Experience!

I rented a property through Romans Basingstoke. They were very quick to take your money and get you all signed up etc. When I moved into the property there was debris and dust everywhere from the decorators that I had to clean up as well as a pigeon nesting on the sky dish over the back of the house! The extractor fan didn't work for the cooker and the hood was covered in grease which smelled like fish. This took months to repair. The hot water pressure was non-existent which meant the shower would not work properly. This took several weeks to repair. The oven also stopped working and again, took weeks to repair. All in this time I was still paying the full rent but not getting the service I was paying for. The contractors that were eventually sent out didn't even finish the jobs properly. On 2 separate occasions the said they were going to get some materials and never came back. This left me without a blind in the bathroom for weeks so all the neighbours could see at night.

When it came to the checkout process, they tried to claim nearly all of the £1442 deposit for cleaning and damages. After going back and forth with evidence it came down to around £700. One of the claims was for cleaning. The property was left at least as clean as when I moved in yet they were trying to claim £370 for cleaning! I raised a dispute with TDS and eventually got the majority of my money back.

They obviously work with the Inventory company to try and scam you out of money at the end of the tenancy so be careful. The check out reports are a lot more detailed than the check in report so take your own pictures for evidence. They tried charging me for damage that was there in 2016! (they accidently uploaded an old check out report to my account from 2016). I dread to think how many tenants were charged for the same damage since then!

All in all, a negative experience and never again would I use them. I've only just got my money back 3 months later!

Romans Basingstoke

As this was my first interaction with estate agents, I found that Ben Plowman bought an enery and outlook that the others seemed to lack. He has been very understanding to our circumstances and has kept us well informed. They insist to use their solicitors and mortgage advisor, promising a faster process and a refund if the sale fell through due to the seller's fault. Despite paying all requested fees promptly, including additional charges for legal searches, after three months of delays, I was told the purchase required a payment in cash due to missing certifications from the leaseholder. They never shared their correspondence with the seller and i believe this was a fake sale, a scam for the buyer! And I'm sure I'm not the first one going through this kind of experience with Romans!

Frustratingly, I later learned from other many agencies that this disclosure is usually made upfront to any potential buyers. When I requested a refund, both the estate agency and solicitor refused, citing penalties for not completing the purchase—something entirely out of my control. The agency's communication was appalling, with one agent hanging up on me and another being rude and unhelpful.

This ordeal cost me over thousands£ and many months of stress and anxiety, severely impacting my mental health and disrupting plans with my partner. Despite promises of a smooth and quick sale, I was left feeling scammed and cheated. The agency’s behavior raises concerns about their professionalism and honesty. I am deeply disappointed and expect a full refund or, at the very least, an acknowledgment and apology for the distress caused! Since then I receive scam calls every day!

Zero stars to be clear

Zero stars to be clear. Basingstoke branch didn't leave us impressed at all. Handful of viewings with little feedback, no click through stats despite being told wed receive them. Sent numerous correspondence which was ignored but they blamed each other. You deal with a branch manager for 5 minutes then a lot of inexperienced staff who I doubt have ever bought a house.

I am very disappointed with this…

I am very disappointed with this company Romans, it has been without hot water for two months, they cannot fix the problem. And we also have two children as you understand it's very difficult to pay myself £1,500 on time and they don't come to fix the water. Does anyone know who to contact or seek my rights in court, we are very disappointed and depressed and feel terrible, this is not normal. I never want to use their services again, they are terrible. Please if anyone can help in any way.
