After we found a cycle shop that could let us try the Skarper unit on our Tandem we went for a test ride and three weeks later we had our own unit ready to ride!
It is so easy to fit and take off making it ideal for loading our tandem on to roof bars and if we go on a ride we do not need assistance we can leave it at home!

The Skarper team have been seamless from start to finish. From the first conversation right through to delivery, everything felt smooth, organised, and genuinely well thought out. Communication was clear, questions were answered without any fuss, and every step happened exactly when they said it would. It’s rare to work with a team that makes the whole process feel this effortless, but Skarper really did. Highly recommend.
already slapped the Skarper on and taken it for a quick spin up the hills near my place. Honestly? I’m kind of impressed. One minute I’m puffing like an asthmatic tractor, the next I’m cruising up slopes like I’ve been sponsored by physics itself.
My wife and I are both in are 50's and Skarpers have got us back out on our existing bikes. Hills in Dorset & Wales have become a breeze. 30+ mile rides in Dutch winds with ease. Setup has been smooth and reliable - exactly what we hoped for!
From pre-order to me fitting the Skarper onto my bike Skarper have been nothing short of brilliant. They checked compatibility with my two bikes, answered e-mails almost immediately and gave me quick accurate advice when I had a small issue during installation. Customer Service Par Excellence. I've been out on both bikes at the weekend and they make all of the hills "disappear". Forget the rest, buy the best.
The extra power has got me back into enjoying cycling again and getting a lot fitter. I weigh over 100 kg and I still get 25-40km range depending on power level I set and number of hills.
So why did I get a Skarper unit?
I’ve been a keen road cyclist for years — clocking up over 6,000 km a year between 2017 and 2022 as part of a local group. In 2023 I had neck surgery, and in 2024 a full knee replacement — just the usual wear and tear! To keep enjoying cycling as much as I always have, I knew I’d need to make a few adjustments and give my body a bit of help.
I wanted to stick with my gravel bike, and during a bike fit session I was introduced to Skarper. The idea that I could simply clip it on and take it off whenever I liked was brilliant. I can ride without the unit completely unassisted, or with the unit also unassisted or in one of the three Skarper modes — Eco, Cruise, or Turbo — depending on how I’m feeling.
I was lucky enough to get one of the first units available in the UK, and I’ve been impressed from day one. The unit, sensor, and recent app have all worked flawlessly, and everyone I’ve spoken to from the Skarper team has been friendly, helpful, and really professional.
It works fantastically well, is super reliable, and can be activated easily with four quick back pedals. The price is also far lower than buying a full e-bike — and it’s much lighter too!
Overall, it’s an excellent bit of kit, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Living in Dorset it is Hill hell and, having a cycling friend who loves hills I just couldn't keep up and didn't enjoy going out. Then I found Skarper. What a difference to our cycle days out now, I can't believe I am actually saying, but my cycling experience is enjoyable.
I bought a Skarper after a brief demo at a bike shop, and it felt slightly risky because it was such a new innovative product. Nine months on, and I think that this is an extraordinary piece of engineering. And I am not exaggerating when I say that it has changed my life in terms of getting about town easily and without the hassle of parking or clogging up roads further with a car. I didn't want a new heavy electric bike, so I am delighted to be able to continue to use my beloved existing bike. One of the great advantages of the Skarper is that I can quickly take it off and carry it with me (into a shop, cinema, theatre etc.), rather than leaving an expensive electric bike advertising itself to be stolen. It works beautifully and reliably and I've used it pretty well every day since I bought it. Being in my 70s now, it has also encouraged me to cycle further afield, knowing that the Skarper is there as my backup when I get tired. I cannot recommend it enough.
Pleased with my Skarper. I didn’t want to change my existing Bike & this was the answer! Simple to fit, and helps with the hills! I can keep Cycling even with a bad Knee!
Great communication with Skarper Staff very helpful Specially Harry 👍🏽
A Fantastic Product 👏🏽👏🏽

I was an early sign up to Skarper and delighted by what we have. They've put a huge amount of effort into making a great conversation kit for bikes. Makes a huge difference.
I have been following Skarper since their inception and proof of concept. They delivered their Skarper in early 2025 and I have been able to use it for my riding in San Diego, California! Super easy to install on virtually ANY bike. The unit quality built and has a generous battery life. I ended up buying an extra charger cable so that I can charge at home and at the office. After many miles on my Skarper, I can only say wonderful things about it, including sharing it with all my cyclist friends!
Great product and communicative company.
Very happy with the device; makes going up steep hills a breeze and importantly, for commuting, it makes getting started at the lights really easy without having to shift down a load of gears! Mostly been using on days when my legs are tired or its super windy out; makes commute very easy. Its got three assistance modes and i generally use a mix of them. Lowest assist mode makes it still easy to get a good work out if thats what you're looking for. I've only ever fully run the battery down once (I forgot to charge it!) and still perfectly good to cycle home without assitance.
Skarper allows you to convert a normal bike into an electric bike with a combined drive/battery unit that clicks onto your bike in a few seconds.
This means you can utilise an existing bike that is probably of higher quality than most new electric bikes that compromise on component quality to meet a pricing level.
The ability to remove the unit also allows you to continue to use your bike as a normal bike if required and reduce the possibility of the batteries being stolen.
The Skarper unit has a decent range and the hill assist feature, which works in all modes e.g. Eco, certainly helps when approaching hills.
You will need to have a bike fitted with disk brakes, as the rear disk is replaced with the Skarper rotor, so this does rule out bikes with rim based brakes.
The initial conversion of my bike was easy as Skarper have teamed up with local Cycle Shops who can install the disk rotor as part of the delivery.
In use I have found the range to be sufficient for my needs e.g. 15-20 miles and the ability to 'switch-off' the unit by back pedalling 3 times means you can save battery life on easy flat sections. You resume power by repeating the back pedalling procedure.
Also, once you reach 15mph the unit stops providing power, so the quicker you ride the further the battery will last.
I had been using the Skarper unit for 6 months and it has performed perfectly with no issues.
In my opinion it is ideal for someone wanting to use it for daily commutes and local shopping trips where they find problems when tackling hills and also leisure rides with the family where you are experiencing age related problems that need a bit of assistance.
My contacts with the Skarper support team have been minimal but when I have contacted them they have been helpful and enthusiastic about providing a good service.
Love cycling but hate hills? The Skarper is an easy to use portable motor which has helped me go further and not dread those hills. We had an initial minor issue to get it to fit my bike but that was easily resolved and I have not looked back...apart from when I pass my husband on those hills! Great customer service from a great company. Love my Skarper.
Skarper is a really great idea and it's really well designed.
I live in an area with hills and I have arthritic knees so the assistance it gives me makes cycling much more pleasurable and allows me to make journeys that would be painful and/or exhausting without it.
I have two bikes (a run-around and a tourer) and I don't want to give them up or buy yet another bike, so Skarper is perfect for me.
=== June 2026 update ===
I stand by my original review after spending more time with the kit. I now use it primarily to assist me when I get tired, which has allowed me to travel significantly longer distances.
I also realised that having this detachable kit can save a lot of money if the bike gets stolen, because I won't need to buy another kit, only a non-electric bike. This isn't the case with electric bikes or permanent conversion kits.
One improvement I would suggest is a more precise battery-level indicator. For instance, the light circle could flash a specific number of times to indicate battery levels at 10% increments.

Using Skarper for my commute over the past couple of months has been an absolute blast! The eco mode gives me all the juice I need for my 22-mile (35 km) round trip. Plus, Dynamic Climb is a huge help, giving me a much-appreciated boost on a couple of tough hills in each direction. My fitness is improving, so I'm looking forward to riding longer distances with Skarper on standby.
A few other things I love:
- The installation was a bit tricky, but Team Skarper were amazing and helped me through it.
- It's super easy to click on and off the bike, and it's not a pain to carry around.
- The way you disengage and re-engage the unit by reverse-pedalling three times is so clever and simple!
Very much enjoying using daily for the commute to work. Makes the hills manageable and the ride enjoyable.
Had an issue with the pedal sensor, customer service was excellent. New sensor out the next day special delivery.
Recommend at least giving Skarper a try, great investment.
I received my Skarper drive unit in August and have been enjoying it ever since. I brought an old 26” bike back to life specifically for Skarper and will also be running it on my Kona gravel bike with 700c wheels. I still keep my 29er for bikepacking in its original (non-electrified) form.
The quoted range and battery life have proven very close to real-world use. What I like most is the flexibility — instead of cluttering my bikes with hub motors, controllers, batteries, throttles, and displays, I can just swap the Skarper unit between bikes in seconds. It’s neat, portable, and CE tested, so it stays legal and safe.
The DiscDrive is the system’s gearbox and transmission, replacing your standard rotor. It can be adapted to fit either Centre Lock or 6-bolt systems and currently supports 160mm rotors (with more sizes expected in future). Combined with the DynamicClimb technology, it powers you through your usual slow-downs on hills with ease.
The design is a little “Apple-like” — an enclosed system that just works. Elegant, hassle-free, and easy to live with, it feels like a proper piece of engineering, not a gimmick.
Skarper has received multiple prestigious awards recognizing its innovation and design, including the Red Dot Design Award 2025, the iF Design Gold Award 2025, and the Eurobike Award 2024. These accolades underline the thought and engineering that go into making this system both functional and stylish. I have done a full review on my YouTube channel called: tomonamission
The Skarper team are fantastic: friendly, helpful, and quick to answer questions. They’re also developing an app and other innovations, which is exciting to see. You can catch them at the National Cycling Exhibition and many other trade shows to test ride the system for yourself — highly recommended.
After one month of use on three different bikes i am not getting the range others seem too barely 20km so i only use my skarper as pop to the shops help for longer rides i remove it

Respuesta de Skarper
Of all the crowdfunded projects I have invested in, Skarper is among the best ones I have engaged with. I risked a large sum paid in advance, and the kit I got back was phenomenal. A few hiccups with delivery, but the whole way, they responded to my emails, and made the effort to sort the delivery out with third parties.
