We had an extremely disappointing…
We had an extremely disappointing experience with Stuttaford Van Lines during our move from South Africa to Australia.
We paid approximately ZAR 36,000 to move fewer than 20 items, yet the service we received was incredibly poor from start to finish.
We were initially told our shipment would take around 2–3 months to arrive. Instead, it took almost 9 months from pickup to delivery. Throughout the process, communication was consistently poor. We had to constantly chase the company for updates and were repeatedly given vague, delayed, or incomplete information. The lack of proactive communication made an already stressful international move significantly worse.
The most upsetting part was the condition many of our belongings arrived in. Several items were irreparably damaged, and a number of boxes and personal belongings were covered in mould, clearly due to being stored for an extended period in unsuitable conditions with poor ventilation.
Some of the items destroyed included sentimental artwork and old family photographs with no negatives — things that simply cannot be replaced.
One particularly disappointing example was a wooden statue that arrived damaged and exposed. Australian quarantine authorities advised that treatment would cost a minimum of AUD $990, but given the extent of the damage it would never have been properly restored. We were therefore forced to dispose of it entirely, which also cost us an additional AUD $550 in fees.
Insurance does not fix this. Money cannot replace irreplaceable memories and sentimental possessions.
For the amount charged and the promises made, the level of care, communication, accountability, and execution fell far below expectations. Based on our experience, I would strongly caution other families relocating internationally before trusting this company with their belongings.
