The kindness and the knowledge of the staff

The kindness and the knowledge of the staff made me feel at ease from the start. I was informed of exactly how the procedure was going to be performed and how long it was going to take.

It was also of benefit to have a phone call the next day to see how I felt.

elva treatment

I have to say from the moment I stepped into The Whiteley Clinic in Marylebone I was welcomed by extremely friendly staff and made to feel at home. There was a very calm atmosphere and excellent hospitality. As I was have ELVA on both legs I was given a private room for the day from the outset which was very comfortable. With treatment on both legs in morning and afternoon I was not in the least bit nervous and as I was talked through every part of the procedures. I am having my review in 6 weeks after the procedure but any queries that I had were also addressed immediately by telephone and another interim check for complete reassurance. I could not rate Professor Whiteley more highly as he was superb and we had a great chat. I have to mention Chris (nurse) and Justina (stenographer) who were both amazing.

Hopeless administration (but apparently being corrected)

Im sure the clinical treatment is excellent, if you can ever get to it. The trouble is the administrative staff.

The clinic runs direct advertisements. See for example Varicose Veins Treatment | Venous Conditions - The Whiteley Clinic

To quote your website:

“The Right Place For You… You can come to any of our The Whiteley Clinic locations for your Consultations and Treatment Plan now! “

“Speak to an expert”…. “Book Consultation”

I did all that. I got an appointment. I got BUPA authorisation for my appointment, even though the condition (varicose veins) could possibly be described as cosmetic, Bupa agreed to pay. Even if Bupa had not, I was quite happy to pay myself.

The problem was, I didn't have a GP referral. Should I really have to bother my somewhat overworked GP with a matter as trivial as varicose veins?

The admin staff could not get over this. They somewhat high handedly and unilaterally cancelled my appointment. Nothing I can do can change their minds....

So it is either false advertising, or the admin staff don't know what the company is saying to customers. But if you're looking to go direct, I suggest you try somewhere else...

EDIT: to reply to the below, 1) I asked several times why you were cancelling my appointment but you didn't reply; 2) I said I'd post a review but again you didn't reply; 3) this review is almost verbatim my email complaint to which you did not reply; 4) "the low recurrence": you already operated on me once and this IS a recurrence after the previous treatment 5) I know its serious. They hurt. That's why I am so annoyed that you unilaterally cancelled the appointment and 6) even now what you are saying is that at worst I may have had to pay for the appointment. That's fine. I'm happy to pay. I'd just like to be treated, not rudely dismissed.

Edit 2: Your answer at 2 seems to be the best solution: your instructions to staff to let patients get the appointment even if they don't have a GP referral letter. That is the direct service that you advertise. thank you for making that change.

On the payment point that you find strange: You said in your first reply that, if I did not have a GP letter, I may have to pay for my appointment. I have said i don't mind that, of course. I expect to pay. In your edited response you deny saying it. I think you may have misunderstood.

Anyway, I am now (nearly a year later) having the treatment at the Candover clinic in Basingstoke who have not (at least yet) unilaterally cancelled on me.

Thank you for your e-mail and I am sorry to hear that you are upset by the necessity for a GP referral letter if you are using private insurance. This requirement is made in our contract with your insurer, and experience has shown that they won't settle the bill if we do not have a GP referral letter on file.

Your review is incorrect as this information has been on our website for many years - please see: https://thewhiteleyclinic.co.uk/prices/ where it is stated:

"Patients with private medical insurance must provide a GP referral letter at least 7 days prior to their first appointment together with any confirmation of eligibility such as membership number and pre-authorisation or a claim reference number. If you are unable to produce your referral letter or your insurance does not cover the cost of your treatment, we will charge you according to a self-funding patient agreement as detailed here."

Also your comment that "Should I really have to bother my somewhat overworked GP with a matter as trivial as varicose veins?" shows that you do not really understand the varicose veins are a medical condition that lead to complications and a decreased quality of life if left to deteriorate as not recognised by the NICE Clinical Guidelines CG168 - see: https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg168.

It is a pity that you resorted to posting a review before discussing this with our management team who could have explained the above and guided you through it so that you could have had our treatment with the proven extremely low recurrence rate.

UPDATE TO ANSWER YOUR EDIT:

I am sorry that you are still upset, but your edits are all very strange.

Naomi Sheppard, our practice manager, telephoned you last week, and you said you were in a meeting and would call back - you didn't. She has tried to call you since and got no answer.

I have just gone out to patient services, and no one knows anyone who has said you might need to pay for your appointment!

If any of this is true, you are welcome to contact me at mark@thewhiteleyclinic.co.uk and tell me who has been saying these things to you.

From our side:

1] As before, we do not get paid by certain insurers if there is no GP letter - even if the patient has been given authorisation.

2] I personally have spoken to all of the staff and have told them that despite insurer's requirements, all patients can be booked, but they will be warned that if a GP letter is not on file and the insurer refuses to pay, then they will be liable. Ths is the only way we can protect ourselves.

3] If you had really wanted to sort this out, then you would have taken Naomi's call, or would have called her back as you said you would.

4] You clima you have a recurrence from our treatment - but all we have on file is a referral letter from your GP from 2011 - I would be grateful if you could e-mail the letters outlining the treatment that you say we did on you as I don;t think you had your previous surgery with us. I would be happy to be shown to be incorrect on this, and merely ask that you send me the correspondence or date so I can find out why we have no record of your treatment.

You now have my direct email and so you can tell me exactly who had been dealing with you and when, and so I can listen to the exchanges for myself.

With regards

Mark Whiteley

PVE and EVLT Procedures

Recently had pelvic vein embolisation and then EVLT at the Whiteley Clinic in London. Both Dr Andrew Willis and Dr Paul Herbert were excellent in putting me at ease during the respective procedures, along with the excellent team of sonographers and nurses. Everything was thoroughly explained, and I got top treatment and care throughout. I would highly recommend.

You are in safe hands

I had a consultation at the Whitely clinic and few weeks later underwent ultrasound guided treatment for superficial venous disease. As it was under local anaesthetic I felt very anxious. All the staff at the clinic were understanding, reassuring and supportive. I cannot thank Dr Willis and his team enough.

My legs were a disaster - NOT ANYMORE :.)

My legs were a disaster, looked terrible and functioned even worse. My veins were huge and my legs felt so heavy. NOT ANYMORE :.)
Dr Whiteley and his team are brilliant. From start to finish they have been fantastic.
I still have to go back for the last part of my procedure but already my legs look brand new and they feel so much lighter. I can wear normal length shorts and do 0-60 in 9 seconds (only one of those things are true).
If you are thinking of having this procedure done do it with absolute confidence.
Dr Whiteley is a genius and his team are brilliant.

Outstanding team and treatment

This is an absolutely outstanding clinic with first class staff. Professor Mark Whitely is a first class surgeon and clearly the best in his field . I had complicated varicose veins in both legs and was treated in a day at the Guildford Clinic . 3 days on and I’m playing golf and the results look really promising.
I would highly recommend Mark Whitely and his brilliant team .
