I am writing this review to warn serious construction estimators and general contractors about the significant disparity between Togal.ai’s marketing claims and the actual capabilities of their software, especially for detailed quantity surveying tasks.
I invested USD 2,700 for a one-year subscription, believing I was purchasing a cutting-edge AI estimating tool capable of automating complex, trade-specific takeoffs as advertised. My expectation was a tool that would handle the next level of estimating—specifically, automatic and accurate calculation of materials like rebar weight or concrete volume based on architectural and structural plans.
The Reality is Severely Disappointing:
Non-Existent Advanced Functionality: The core functionality I needed—the ability to perform complex calculations essential for structural trades (like rebar or concrete volume estimation)—is completely missing. The software is essentially a highly-priced, basic area and linear measurement tool with an AI layer that merely automates simple counting and tracing of areas.
Unsuitable for Detailed Takeoff: Togal.ai does not offer the "proper tools" required for genuine quantity takeoffs for trades like concrete, where volume calculations and reinforcement details are mandatory. This is a critical failure for a product marketed as an AI companion for estimators.
Basic Functions are Overpriced: For a platform that mainly delivers basic area and linear takeoffs and element counts—tasks that can be accomplished with high-rated manual takeoff software at a fraction of the cost—the USD 2,700 annual fee is exorbitant. I paid a premium for AI capabilities that simply do not exist in a practical, production-ready form for my construction needs.
Misleading Marketing: The marketing strongly suggests an "AI Companion for Estimators" that saves time on all aspects of takeoff. For any contractor dealing with structural work, a tool that cannot calculate rebar or concrete volume is a fundamental misrepresentation of its core use and value.
Conclusion: A Waste of Time and Money
My subscription has proven to be a substantial financial loss and a massive disappointment. I would not recommend Togal.ai to any serious construction professional needing to perform detailed, accurate, and trade-specific quantity takeoffs. It is an extremely expensive solution for basic floor plan takeoffs and lacks the depth and feature set required for real-world estimating challenges in concrete and structural trades.
Buyers beware: Thoroughly test their capabilities using your own complex, trade-specific drawings (e.g., structural, electrical) during the demo period before committing to an annual subscription.
