“Very disappointing experience with Tuscany Now & More”
We booked I Ruderi in Civitella d’Agliano through Tuscany Now & More and were extremely disappointed—not only with the property, but especially with the way Tuscany Now & More handled the problems we encountered.
The property was advertised by Tuscany Now & More as a “Fully air-conditioned villa.” When we arrived, the air conditioning in one of the bedrooms was not working. The owner’s caretaker who accompanied us to the villa was able to turn the air conditioning on but it stopped working in a few minutes. The caretaker then called someone who told her to turn the electricity off and restart it. She did this and the air conditioning came on for another few minutes and then cut out again. Tuscany Now & More later claimed that the air conditioning was not working because the door in the second bedroom was open. Again this was not true because the caretaker was able to turn on the air conditioning twice while the door was open. What we were told was a complete fabrication.
Even more troubling, in a subsequent email Tuscany Now & More told us that the air conditioning had been turned on before our arrival. That was not true. The villa was stiflingly hot when we arrived. Why would we lie about this?
There was also a significant issue that we feel Tuscany Now & More should have disclosed more clearly before booking. Access to one of the bedrooms required negotiating a very narrow and steep spiral staircase. It would be difficult even for a much younger person and was particularly problematic for our group, all of whom are over 70. The website mentions multiple staircases which was not a problem as we have no mobility issues. Depsite that, the spiral staircase was extremely narrow and steep and it would have been a major problem taking suitcases up.
The furnishings at I Ruderi were also quite dated and in need of updating, which was disappointing given how the property was presented. There was a very distinct smell of mold and mildew when we entered.
Tuscany Now & More also criticized us for making other arrangements when it became clear that the problems could not be solved. It was a Saturday night and we were booked into the I Ruderi villa for 7 nights. The last thing we wanted to do was
find other accommodation for a full week. We spoke to 3 different representatives of Tuscany Now & More about the issues but they offered no solutions. We had no choice but to arrange alternative accommodation because the air conditioning was not working and the staircase to the second bedroom was unsafe. We were desperate and did not have the luxury of time to find alternative accommodation for a full week.
What really distinguishes this experience, however, is Tuscany Now & More’s response to our complaints. We understand that things can occasionally go wrong with a rental property. What we expected from a professional rental company was an effort to acknowledge the problems, take responsibility, and work toward a reasonable solution. Instead the Tuscany now personnel who we spoke to, including the CEO, believed everything that the owner and villa told them without independent verification and disregarded everything we reported.
Our biggest disappointment is therefore with Tuscany Now & More, rather than simply with I Ruderi. We relied on the agency to accurately represent the property and to provide appropriate assistance to us ( their clients ) when significant problems arose. That didn’t happen. They essentially called us liars and we felt totally disrespected.
Based on our experience, we would never book through Tuscany Now & More again and would discourage others not to do so. We would encourage prospective customers to carefully verify the condition and accessibility of any property directly with the company, in writing, rather than relying solely on the agency’s description.
