Best career decision I've ever made

My time with Vertex School was truly superb.

I was looking to make a career move from motion graphics into environment art for games, and Vertex provided the structured approach I needed to re-skill and apply those skills to projects I became genuinely proud of.

The course material was excellent, with plenty of additional resources included in each section, allowing us to explore topics in greater depth when time allowed.

Term 1 focused on prop creation for games, ending with a capstone project in which we spent several weeks creating a high-quality portfolio prop. Term 2 delved deeper into core subjects, reinforcing what we had learned in the first term, and concluded with another capstone project that simulated a real-world art test. The third term (my personal favourite) was dedicated to building a complete environment, bringing everything we had learned together in practice.

My favourite part of Vertex was the people. The team are incredibly knowledgeable, approachable, and consistently push you to get the best out of yourself. Every member of the team went above and beyond, always making time to answer questions and provide thoughtful feedback.

I would highly recommend Vertex School to anyone looking to get into game art. I’ve developed skills I never thought possible, especially in such a relatively short period of time, a truly career changing experience.

Awesome

My experience at Vertex School was incredible, to put it simply.

During the nine months I spent in the Game Art course, I learned so much that it's hard to summarize. Yes, the lectures are prerecorded, but you spend a lot of time with instructors and fellow students discussing your work and learning beyond the course material.

The second and third terms are quite different, placing a stronger emphasis on building solid 3D workflow and production fundamentals to prepare you for the final portfolio project. Overall, the entire course is time well invested if you're interested in preparing for a career as a 3D artist in the game industry.

The mentors are the best part of the school. They are always ready to help, support you every step of the way, and guide you through any obstacles you encounter. Whenever I needed advice or assistance, I could always count on them.

Vertex School played a major role in helping me get hired in the industry, and I genuinely believe it was the best educational experience I've ever had. It pushed me to achieve something I had always dreamed of and gave me the confidence I needed.

If you're looking to challenge yourself or make a meaningful change in your career or your life, Vertex School is a great choice.

Vertex school is great for people wanting to challange themselves and like to work at their own pace

What is definitely the best about Vertex are the montors. You get to learn and get feedback from people working in the industry. There are couple feedback sessions throughout the week and there is aweekly task so you progress fast. I think videos are detailed and guide you through the process but I think it's better to add your own personal challange or spin to the way you do the weekly task rather than just blindly follow the tutorials. I was a full time student in uni for game art but Vertex gave me so much more for cheaper price. In general I'd wholeheartedly reccomend

This is a complex review but here I am…

This is a complex review but here I am at the end of a 9 month game art course and I find myself wondering if I made a mistake trying vertex. The answer is honestly yes and no. So let's get the good. In terms 2 and 3, you get to work with an in industry professional and the one I worked with was easily the best part of the course and Patrick easily would be worth about 4k of teaching alone to have his expertise around.

The negative is that's all you're paying for. The course videos are weak, you are far better off just googling and self teaching each and every snag you hit. After a while, most of your time learning will just be self teaching and it'll look about as good as you are about self teaching. Many of the other staff, mostly semi employed to unemployed ta's which are Discord guys hanging out on an Unmoderated discord server. (For example some users had hentai pfps, and had fake names where students are asked to place their real name in discord.) And sort of awkwardly talk down at you. Most students in my cohort completely dropped out. I managed to keep in to the end via long nights in internet tutorials and just sheer volumetric trial and error.

So, here at the end of 9 months, I have about 9 months of self teaching plus some awesome zbrush skills that fit Patrick's highly practiced skillset, which again, are worth paying for. So is it a scam? Uh, it's more like if you need a something to do that keeps you self learning and if what you're doing lines up with the thing your teacher happens to do professionally, they can teach you that thing. So I'd say it's like a garage band project over that of a scam.

Not a lot of professional content, the pre recorded videos are often long sprawling lectures with less features than a paid teaching box tutorial, no chapter areas to jump around the video, random references to outside of school materials, and much of the staff are former students who kind of just rock a job at a studio somewhere and teach what they do there. Even in these reviews you have current teachers leaving 5 stars, and in reddit search results, those glowing reviews are employees too. So, make what you will. For me, I need to find some teachers after this course wraps up.

Edit: Hey I should probably put. I am a nonstandard to this school. Most of my peers are kids, college hopefuls coming into this fresh. I myself have been working in games and entertainment for a long time. I'm literally writing from Redmond, Washington. Thing is, I haven't heard of anyone from the school and most are East Coast or Europe located. So think the playstation store game companies and that particular look. If you like that look, and you're like "Aw yeah I want that! Beard guy let's go!" then you probably have a lot to learn there. Especially if you're looking to use Unreal and its blueprints. But if you're looking for like, anything else. They don't know it.

Wonderful Experience in Game Art Programme

I finished the 9 months 3D Game Art Program in January this year. I can genuinely say that this programe really worth the money. I started from knowing nothing about 3D art before, and Vertex really got me started so quick and learned almost everything I need within the 9 months. It starts directly with the real useful technical skills you need to become a 3D artist, without having to go through some theories that you will never use in your life like other traditional eduational institutions. I finally came out with a portfolio that I'm really satisfied with. Looking back I can't believe how fast I've progressed.
Also I've met so many wonderful people here. All staffs are extremely helpful and are well-versed in all cutting-edge techniques. They even used their own times after classes to help with my works. They treat your progress as seriously as if it were their own, and they really want you to succeed. All tutors are so patient as well, when I didn't know anything about 3D softwares at the start and asked many stupid questions about the UI and the navigation, they walk me through those step by step. As the contact hours are with several students in a group together, I met many lovely classmates as well that we always share works to each other and discuss about learning progresses and techniques. I truly appreciate Vertex to give me this wonderful experiences to get into 3D art, it was a happy and also fulfilling time, which you have to work really hard to catch up with the pace. I would really love to recommand Vertex to everyone who has a dream or would like to persue a career in the field of game art!

Very positive experience and good foundation for expanding my Tech Art pipeline

Overall, my experience with Vertex School Tech art Bootcamp was very positive. Coming from a background as a Tech Artist in other engines and DCCs, this course was exactly what I needed to level up and expand my skillset with industry-standard tools like Houdini.
Having access to the educational license was a game-changer; it finally gave me the environment I needed to build HDAs and dive deep into procedural workflows, which was something I had been wanting to learn for a long time. The support from the instructors and the team was solid throughout the process.
The course felt a bit short for the amount of topics covered, I personally would have loved for it to be longer to dive even deeper, but I understand there are more extensive options available if you have the budget.
At the end of the day, it's like everything else in this industry: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. The more effort you invest, the better results you’ll see, and the more valuable questions you’ll be able to ask your mentors. It was a great learning journey that gave me the tools to start building my own procedural pipelines.

A great experience

There are many passionate and professional game industry professionals here, so whether you’re looking to change careers or improve your 3D skills, this is an excellent place to start. It’s no exaggeration to say that Vertex School graduates may know more about modeling than university professors. Everyone is very friendly.

Great way to learn and create something cool

I finished the technical art bootcamp (18 weeks) at Vertex School and came out of it with a cool capstone project that I am proud of. I have a computer science background, so I got to practice a lot of 3D art concepts that I normally would struggle to tackle alone. I also came out of it with a solid understanding of Houdini and Houdini Engine, and I am already itching to make something else with my Houdini knowledge. Overall, I had a good time with the weekly classes and assignments, got to meet cool peers and instructor, and created a polished portfolio piece that I am proud of. Would recommend!

Exceptional

As a vertex student I can say that my instructors are industry professionals and give extremely useful advice. Having taken the Game Development Program (which is quite intensive) I was impressed. Instructors are always available for questions regarding any difficulty with code and will walk you through the troubleshooting process. I have found this extremely useful because you are always shown step by step where you misstepped which makes it far easier to troubleshoot problems in the future. Additionally I have found that even long after a course is finished, instructors are willing to help out.

The school supports students by hosting frequent workshops with those working in studios (usually colleagues) and they will go over portfolio submissions explaining how best to present work and even provide help developing the kind of cv which will catch the eye of studios by explaining what they look for in hiring and what they discount. I have been very pleased by the level of care given to providing the tools, tips and tricks necessary to succeed in the gaming industry. They also provide exceptional training for artists. I took one course for ZBrush and the instructor was a world famous designer.

Finally it was stated in another review that classes are prerecorded. While recorded courseware is provided (with lifetime access) every week a proficient instructor will go though that week’s lesson and code live with students following along and additionally there is a weekly lab where any questions about the required personal project (which we have to produce to graduate) is held - with very personal attention. I have never found the instructors or the lab assistants to be anything other than proficient and helpful. I started with Vertex for the 3rd GDP course and still study with them to further hone my skills. I would highly recommend this school for studying art, game development or technical art. It’s worth noting that they are the first institution (and possibly still only) certified by Epic to teach Unreal Engine.

As with any high level study, it is up to the student to reach out with questions and to attend the free workshops. You get out of the courses what you are willing to put into them. If you are motivated and willing to try, you can earn yourself a place in the industry. My advice to anyone applying is that they understand exactly how much work will be involved and to be sure to set aside enough time.

Waste of $9k and probably a scam

Instructors have little to no industry accreditation and teach through pre-made videos and use pre-made assets. The one-on-one with my so-called professor was a different person each time, and I suspect a scam. For $9k and no industry connections and ineffective teaching, I am thoroughly upset and disappointed.

Hi Mr. Biggsy,

Your review does not accurately reflect how our programs operate, and it raises questions about whether you actually attended a Vertex School program.

At Vertex School, students are assigned a dedicated mentor for their small group sessions, and all of our mentors have professional experience in the game industry. Our mentors are never referred to as professors. During the Game Art Program, students create three original portfolio pieces.

Our goal is to provide hands-on learning, practical skills, and mentorship to help students grow their craft and pursue opportunities in the industry. We take feedback seriously and always strive to support students effectively.

Thank you,
The Vertex School Team

I wouldn't recommend spending close to…

I wouldn't recommend spending close to $9000 on this course. You won't be able to compete with all of the other new graduates from accredited Universities.

Hi Mat,

We’re sorry to hear that you didn’t feel the program met your expectations. Breaking into the game industry is challenging for many new graduates, including those from accredited universities.

Many students come to Vertex School after graduating from an accredited university because they want to build the practical skills and portfolio work needed to land a job. Our programs focus on hands-on learning, mentorship from industry experts, and portfolio development to help students stand out. Many of our students have successfully secured roles in the industry or advanced their careers using what they learned here.

In addition to skills, portfolio, and connections, breaking into the industry takes time, a positive mindset, and a strong belief in yourself. Just because you haven’t landed a job yet doesn’t mean you won’t.

We’d be happy to discuss your experience further and see if there’s any way we can help. Please reach out to us at support@vertexschool.com
