Misleading and Untrustworthy – Forced to Buy Extra Insurance at Split airport
We rented a car through Norwegian, with insurance provided by AXA, to be picked up from AVIS at Split Airport. When we arrived, the AVIS staff told us they do not cooperate with AXA and therefore could not guarantee any coverage if something happened.
We were pressured into buying a new insurance from AVIS for €200 for just 7 days — even though we could show documentation proving that our AXA insurance fully covered us and that no additional insurance was needed.
Once we got home, we contacted AXA, who confirmed that our original insurance was indeed fully valid and covered everything as stated.
It was clear we were not the only ones tricked at the counter — the customer next to us was told the exact same story.
Very disappointing and unprofessional experience. It feels like AVIS is taking advantage of customers’ lack of information and pressuring them into paying for unnecessary extras. Definitely not what you expect from a supposedly reputable company.

I had prebooked through Booking, but when I arrived the price in the contract was higher than agreed and they tried to add an extra insurance I had already declined. When I asked them to correct it, they said it was “just a standard contract” and that I should sign anyway — but I didn’t trust that.
I refused to sign and rented from another company outside instead — there are several honest and friendly ones just next door. Avis still kept my deposit, but my bank (VISA) helped me get it back.
After reading other reviews, I realized this happens to many people here: higher prices, unwanted insurance, and deposits not refunded. I’m writing this only to help others avoid the same experience.

Really scammy. Penalize you for not having a credit card. Forced us to pay €207 to take out their insurance on our debit card even though we had our own private insurance.

I booked a seven-day car rental through a website called Holiday Autos, which included full insurance coverage. I collected the car from Dubrovnik Airport in Croatia on August 21, 2025. The vehicle was provided by a company named Avis Payless Cars. I arrived at the airport around 8 o'clock in the evening, and the representative asked me for a €400 deposit and an additional €95 for crossing into another country. I paid a total of €495 with my credit card.
Upon my return on August 28, 2025, the car company conducted a full inspection of the vehicle. The handwritten notes on my invoice indicated that everything was in order, but I was refunded only €256.18. I sent multiple emails to Holiday Autos and Avis regarding this issue. Eventually, I received a response stating that €238.88 was charged for insurance by Avis .I was not informed about this insurance charge, nor did I request it, as I had already purchased insurance from Holiday Autos.
I realized I was not informed about these charges, and the representative who handed me the car was rushed, indicating that it was a busy day. He asked me to sign a document for the collection of the vehicle. Now they claim that I signed a contract for the insurance. I feel this is a scam; I was not properly explained the charges and was rushed into signing the paperwork, which led to my financial loss.
I encourage everyone to avoid this company. If you decide to rent a car, be sure to read all the documents carefully, as they may try to mislead you and take your money.

🚨 AVIS SCAM – BE WARNED 🚨
I’ve been a loyal Avis customer for almost 10 years worldwide, but this recent rental in Croatia was an absolute disaster that cost me €395 extra on top of my prepaid €450 reservation — plus lost vacation time.
1️⃣ Got a car with a broken windshield not noted in the contract. No replacement available until the next morning.
2️⃣ Wasted half a day of my vacation driving back and forth to swap it. As agreed I had to return their damaged car, naively did this without refueling (as not my fault) — fuel missing was max €10, they charged me €81.99 for fuel services.
3️⃣ Avis staff tick all the extra insurances and “convenience services” for you without asking, then verbally assure you (I asked 5x) everything is prepaid and no extra charges will apply. They also force-scroll to the signature page so you don’t read the full contract.
4️⃣ At final drop-off, staff again gave verbal confirmation that everything was fine and the deposit would be fully released. (I asked again 5x)
5️⃣ Final invoice with additional 395€ and a big 🖕response from all customer services
👉 Avis now hides behind fine print, claiming I “accepted” optional products I was verbally told were included in my prepaid reservation.
Result: €395 stolen, vacation time lost, and a disgusting customer experience.

After landing at Zadar Airport
After landing at Zadar Airport, I booked a rental car with AVIA Car rental — and it turned out to be the worst experience of our entire trip.
Upon arrival, the staff asked me to fill out a form and attempted to take a security deposit of €2100, which was expected. However, they refused to accept my Advanzia credit card, despite it being a valid and commonly used credit card.
The staff member then told me the only way they would accept the card was if I purchased their insurance package worth €700. It became very clear they were trying to force us into buying their overpriced insurance.
Meanwhile, my family had to wait outside the airport for over 2 hours in the heat, due to their rude and unhelpful behavior. I checked with other rental companies at the airport, and they all confirmed they would have accepted the same credit card without issue, proving this was just a pressure tactic by AVIA.
This experience completely ruined the start of our trip. The AVIA staff were impolite, inflexible, and clearly focused only on making money through hidden charges and upselling insurance.
My sincere advice: Do not pay AVIA Cars in advance. Book with a company where you can pay on the spot, and where your card is actually accepted without being forced into extra costs.
Thank you, AVIA Cars, for wasting our time, harassing my family, and setting a terrible tone for our holiday.

VORSICHT - unseriöse Abwicklung
Haben in Split über carjet ein Auto im Aug. 25 gemietet. Das Auto lief sowohl über Payless (siehe Bewertungen!!) aber die Abwicklung: Autoausgabe, Kaution, Mietgebühr etc über Avis Budget. Die Auto Miete wurde sowohl online abgebucht als auch am Schalter von Avis abgebucht ebenso die Kaution. Bei der Abgabe dann sehr schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht, es wurde ein Schaden reklamiert, den man bei der Abholung nur hätte sehen können, wenn man sich hinkniet und die Stelle berührt (Schwelle unterhalb der Beifahrertür) . Es wurde eine Summe kommentarlos von Avis von der Visa abgebucht , obwohl wir dem widersprochen haben. Verwiesen werden wir jedoch an Payless, obwohl alles über Avis Budget läuft. Unsere E-Mails an Avis Budget und Payless blieben bisher unbeantwortet, sodass nur ein rechtlicher Weg möglich ist. Für uns stellt sich die Verknüpfung von Payless (siehe gesonderte Bewertungen) und Avis Budget als unseriös dar.
Terrible experience
Terrible experience, car was filthy, not a full tank as promised, lots of scratches not on form and got upset when asked for them to be added. If you don’t know your pin for credit card they will charge you to pay up front on debit card, over 100 euros. I’d honestly avoid, one of the local firms that cares about reputation likely to be much better.

We rent a car for 2 days, when returning we couldn’t find petrol station. We were supposed to return at 12:30pm, we returned at 12:27pm. We went to talk to them. We had to wait for a while before they can check the car, then mentioned about the petrol. We said we couldn’t find petrol station, the guy told us where the station is and we can fill it up if we want. We filled it up and returned the car. They said everything is fine, please sign this. We signed And then after a few minutes we got an email about the charge. They charge us for 3 days!!! We went back to talk to them again. The person who suggested stayed behind the closed door and other guy was telling us that we came in at 12:40pm ( it’s a lie as we had a picture with the car at 12:27pm) and it’s our fault that we were late. We explained the whole thing, he didn’t want to listen to anything!! What sort of inhuman behaviour is this!!! How can someone charge you for a 24hours for that delay. This is scam!!!! This sort of experience just ruins your holiday!!
Avis Zagreb
We booked a car through the Ryanair app and had to buy additional insurance of €200. When we left Croatia they took €600 off our account. It seems like they charged us twice. They are defending themselves of course. A total disappointment. Never again Avis!

Ich hatte eine sehr negative Erfahrung mit dieser Mietwagenfirma. Trotz eines pünktlich gemieteten Fahrzeugs kam es zu einer Panne, und die Pannenhilfe liess über Stunden auf sich warten – viel zu spät, um meinen gebuchten Flug zu erreichen. Während meine Familie noch rechtzeitig zum Flughafen kam, musste ich sieben Stunden später einen Ersatzflug antreten, der mich 300 € zusätzlich kostete.
Doch damit nicht genug: Etwa 1400 € Kaution wurden plötzlich und ohne jegliche Erklärung von meiner Kreditkarte abgebucht. Auf meine wiederholten E-Mails erhielt ich erst nach zehn Tagen die Antwort, dass der Fall „noch bearbeitet“ werde. Die Rückerstattung kam dann zwar, aber erst über einen Monat nach Rückgabe des Fahrzeugs.
Der Kundenservice war schleppend und wenig transparent. Die zusätzlichen Flugkosten wurden komplett ignoriert, und auf meine Forderung nach Entschädigung wurde nicht eingegangen.
Ich kann diese Firma absolut nicht empfehlen – weder wegen des Umgangs mit Problemen noch wegen des Kundenservices. Solch eine Behandlung sollte kein zahlender Kunde erfahren müssen.

Avis at Zagreb international airport be very wary and aware when renting from this location. I booked my week long rental in advance on Avis (Canada). Quote on my app was in Canadian $ Shld have been $166 Canadian, I have full rental coverage with my personal car insurance and also covered with my credit card so I declined all their OPTIONAL insurance printed out all my necessary documentation to show coverage. When I got to the counter after a days travel after already having checked in for the rental I was advised that charges would be in Euro for the exact same amount as the what I had in Canadian $. I was fine with that, after I refused their optional insurance, agent advised that they would require a deposit of 300 Euro which I was also fine with. Got my rental returned it after 7 days, had the gate agents do a walk around the car, check for fuel and dents all was fine. They had an issue with their “mobile terminals” so they couldn’t close out the rental right there said it could take an hour or so, but all was good and they would email me my receipt. I saw my receipt after I landed expecting to see a charge around 166 Euro with taxes but to my surprise the bill was for 441 Euro with an additional 258 Euro in “optional charges” from the receipt. I called Avis and they advised that this was for insurance coverage which I had declined, no deposit was ever taken out they just added this insurance without my consent. I’m still in the process of disputing with Avis but be very careful when renting from this location at Zagreb.

Expérience franchement déplorable. Nous avions réservé en ligne une voiture de catégorie N (groupe SUV compact, type Audi Q3 ou équivalent), en payant un supplément pour être surclassés. À notre arrivée à l'agence AVIS de l'aéroport de Dubrovnik, impossible de récupérer la voiture sans une carte de crédit au nom exact du conducteur principal. Jusque-là, on peut comprendre une certaine rigueur. Sauf qu'ils ont catégoriquement refusé :
d'accepter la carte d'un second conducteur pourtant déclaré,
de modifier le conducteur principal,
ou d'annuler pour relouer immédiatement à un autre nom (sous prétexte que ce serait beaucoup plus cher en dernière minute).
La seule solution qu'on nous a "proposée", c’était de souscrire l’assurance maximale (Avis Inclusive) à 41,98 € par jour soit plus de 545 €, pour éviter l’empreinte de carte bancaire. En clair : aucun choix, paiement forcé sous pression. Résultat : nous avons payé plus de 500 € de plus que prévu, soit au total 1 103 € (668 € prépayés + 435 € sur place), pour une location initialement bien moins chère.
Et ce n’est pas tout.
Au lieu d’un Audi Q3 ou équivalent, on nous remet un Opel Grandland, absolument pas dans la même gamme (intérieur cheap, moteur poussif, et pas du tout le confort ni les performances attendues). Le véhicule était dans un état déplorable : rayures, impacts, plastiques qui tiennent à peine. Le clignotant tombait tout seul, ce qui nous a fait croire à un acte de vandalisme. Nous avons dû acheter de la super glue à nos frais pour éviter d’être facturés encore plus à la restitution.
Le moteur, un 1.2L puretech anémique, consommait 15L/100 km, ce qui nous a obligés à multiplier les pleins, augmentant encore la facture finale. Autant dire qu’on a passé notre séjour à maudire cette voiture, qui nous a gâché une bonne partie du road trip.
À titre de comparaison, chez SIXT ou Enterprise, les voitures “équivalentes” le sont réellement. Exemple à Madère : une Mercedes Classe A réservée, une Audi A3 livrée, sans piège ni mauvaise surprise.
Conclusion : AVIS nous a forcés à souscrire une assurance à prix exorbitant, livré un véhicule indigne de la catégorie, en mauvais état, et tout cela dans une ambiance désagréable et rigide. À éviter absolument. Préférez largement les autres loueurs sérieux.
Corporate supported scamming
They scam, with Lowest "hook" rental prices. I got a car for 40euro on website... by the time they finished scamming me it was 340euro. There was aleast 5 in front of me scammed the same way with credit card limit declined forcing you to pay for insurance you didnt need or want. I can't believe AVIS condones this behaviour in many locations around the Mediterranean (and have for many years)...taking advantage of the passing trade!!! Says alot about the company....

I recently traveled through Zagreb Airport and had a mixed experience. While the airport itself is modern and easy to navigate, I faced significant issues with my car rental through Avis.
Upon returning my vehicle, I was disappointed to find that it took a full six days to receive my deposit back. This delay was frustrating and unexpected, especially since I had anticipated a quicker process. Additionally, I tried to reach Avis for clarification using the phone number provided in my rental agreement, but no one ever answered. This lack of communication added to my frustration.
I hope that the airport can work with rental companies to improve their customer service and efficiency. Despite this setback, I appreciated the airport’s amenities and overall cleanliness.
I look forward to my next visit, but I would advise future travellers to carefully consider their car rental options.

Unfortunately I have to agree with what I read here.
I had booked through Booking a rental car with Avis. I took a additional insurance with my booking.
When I picked up the car at the AVIS desk on the airport in Split the employee has managed to give me a full service contract.
Without asking, or without even say something he let me sign for something I didn't want.
Turned out whenI returned the car at Zadar airport, I had to pay 200 eur more above on the 270 eur I payed before.
When I asked for an explanation at the desk at Zadar airport, the employe was very short and rude and only give me a card with an email on.
So yes this looks like a scam.
So if the management from AVIS would read this.
PLEASE do something about it! This is not how you
should treat your customers !!

I also fell victim to the insurance scam. My experience was exactly the same as already described by previous contributors. €200 added to the pre-paid contract for insurance that was not requested, booked or needed. The only advice I can give is simply do not use Avis or Budget at Dubrovnik Airport. There are plenty of alternatives who are not as dishonest!
