I hate this company! They should not be able to operate this line, years and years of absolutely horrific service and increase prices! When will Greg Smith actually sort this issue out?

Enough of the excessive strikes

Enough of the excessive strikes! Embrace technology, replace staff with robots/computers. Trains originate from the UK but electric trains have been running in the rest of Europe for half a century while the UK still runs more expensive and polluting diesel? Who's running this country?

The new Chiltern timetable is better, but why have the carriages been reduced, which means. Passengers being packed in like sardines and having to stand up most of the way.Hope Adrian Shooter isn't looking down.

Terrible decline in service

As regular commuter from Haddenham & Thame Parkway over the last 20 years, I can honestly say that the service on this line has deteriorated to such an extent that I’m genuinely considering moving house to be able to commute from somewhere better.

The reliability and punctuality has historically been brilliant but in the 2 years since the end of lockdown, it has been a total disaster. All trains are shorter than they used to be. It is almost impossible to get a seat on any of the principal commuter services. On many occasions, the overcrowding is simply dangerous and it’s difficult to believe they are actually allowed to do this. The service has been particularly hit by industrial action in the last 6 months. The upper deck of the car park has been closed off for several years awaiting demolition because it’s unsafe - yet everyone is still expected to park underneath this apparently unsafe structure. Trains are dirty and seating etc hasn’t been upgraded in at least 10 years.

If you are looking to move to the area and the commuter line is a big part of your thinking, think again.

Why is there only ever 2 carriages?!

I wish I could give Chiltern Railways a zero.

I use this train line (unfortunately) for everything; commuting, social, health appointments etc. I’m heavily pregnant and simply have not been able to get on any trains because they’re always reduced to 2 carriages and always hideously full. I am not in a position where I can squeeze into a heaving train and stand with my face pressed against the door! I would honestly faint. I’ve missed birthday parties, evenings at the theatre, Hospital appointments - all because when the train arrives there’s no way I can get on it. I often wait for 2 or 3 trains and in the end just admit defeat and go home. I used to go into the office 3-4 days per week, and now at best it’s 1 and I have to try and go at an unusual time of day to miss the chaos.

I’ve emailed an insane amount of times about this issue and it falls on deaf ears every time. Chiltern Railways should without a doubt be nationalised. It simply cannot be managed any worse!

Is it 1973 or 2023? Shockingly bad

The worst railway company in the UK bar none it's not 2023 it's 1973 all over again! The trains are ancient, stinking, dirty mess, grubby seats and carpets, toilets a disgrace, regularly the HVAC has packed up so you get boiled alive or frozen solid but never comfortable. Even had one with no lighting on an evening train home, sitting for an hour in total darkness. There is never enough rolling stock, shortened down 2 or 3 car trains that used to be 4 or 6 car ones, dangerous levels of overcrowding is frequently an issue. The line is bumpy (granted that is network rail), particularly bad south bound past Bicester, the price is absolutely extortionate (£100 for a travcard from Banbury!), the staff unbelievably surly and rude. Sooner the government step in and take on the franchise from the abysmal pathetic excuse for a company arriva trains the better. If I could give 0 stars I would! Truly truly terrible.

No doubt this review will be ignored by Chiltern Railways

This review will no doubt fall on deaf ears over at Chiltern Railways HQ but the service from Oxford Parkway to Marylebone is bloody awful. Yes, the line is busier while the bridge at Didcot Parkway is being repaired and everyone from the Oxford via Reading to Paddington service uses the Marylebone line. But why oh why does Chiltern Railways like to 'play' with us passengers by constantly putting on two or four carriages for busy journeys? Am on the 2307 train from London Marylebone and people are sitting on the floor because some geniuses put on two carriages for the last train of the evening. We've missed events because of this maddening two carriages policy and ensuing safety issues on the journey. One journey was delayed by 50mins, less than the 60mins+ delay required for a full refund. We were offered a £5 refund, after paying £40+ for tickets. Nothing of course for £90 in tickets to a play we were travelling to see that we were not allowed in for because our train was delayed by 50mins so we arrived at the door too late. Every journey now involves people sitting on the floor, standing or feeling faint due to overcrowding. There's got to be a better way. Please for the love of God can you stop putting on just two carriages during busy times. And stop saying 'thank you for travelling with Chiltern Railways...'. We don't have a bloody choice do we? I would suggest nationalising the service but am unsure if the government can be trusted to do any better...

We were sold time tickets, but received open. Turns out we were mis-sold; they don't really offer timed tickets

We purchased tickets for a train at a specific time so that we can catch an onward journey from St Pancras. Or so we thought! The booking confirmation specifies the time of travel that we chose, but when the tickets were delivered, it turned out they have no time stamp which means we may not be able to travel at the time we need. This is basically an off-peak ticket which means you can travel at any time off-peak. Basically, we were sold one thing (as per the booking confirmation) and then delivered an entirely different thing which is not suitable. We were mis-sold.

This is RUBBISH. DO I need to allow for a day to get to my destination for 1 h journey? Are we back in the dark ages of (rail) travel? It seems we are!

The conclusion? If you need to be somewhere at a given time, then do yourself a favour and do NOT choose Chiltern Railways.

How the mighty have fallen

This company have lost their customer focus and simply trot out the same excuses (ageing stock needing more maintenance, Oxford service busier than usual) without seemingly realising that these are issues they control. A new timetable this week was a chance to improve things but, so far, on the 7.06 train from Gerrards Cross I haven't got near to getting seat (but this is only 4 carriages whilst the 7.08 it replaced was meant to be 7 carriages although usually ran short).

They used to be so good and have the benefit of being the only company running in and out of Marylebone yet the service is appalling and the pricing is was too high.

It costs me £40 per day from Gerrards Cross including £9.30 to park and £30.30 for a travel card. The same trip on the Metropolitan line from Chalfont & Latimer is around £20 (£6 to park and £14'ish on the time... it is 15 minutes slower but I, like so many, we be going to the Met line and not returning I fear.

I’ve just had a journey that justifies…

I’ve just had a journey that justifies the ridiculous chicken advert Chiltern Railways uses! No aircon, people standing all the way from Marylebone to Bicester, stopped for 10 minutes and no announcement, apology, explanation. I usually rate Chiltern and no doubt people largely go on here when they’ve had a bad experience. This was my worst in the 20 years I’ve been using the railway. The train was the 16.46 from Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill, today 18th May. Give your driver / guard some training on customer service please

Poor service

I have to agree with the majority of other comments. Yesterday (10th May) I caught the 07.30 Aylesbury to Marylebone train. Despite the automated station announcement and electronic displays stating that it would have four carriages there were in fact two. On departure from Stoke Mandeville every seat was taken and from Great Missenden there was barely any standing room. The platform at Amersham was crowded (the train was scheduled to run non stop to Marylebone so obviously a popular service for commuters) but it was impossible for anyone to get on the train due to the crush. The driver was very apologetic and said there was a shortage of stock due to an earlier breakdown. To be honest, even four carriages would have been nowhere near enough. Most trains on Chiltern Railways are far too short and the Class 165 units are horribly cramped with their ridiculous 2+3 seating and virtually no legroom. Also the Aylesbury to London service is no faster than it was 60 years ago and is being slowed still further with the new timetable! Another problem is at Marylebone, where platform numbers are not announced until a few minutes before departure, followed by the inevitable mad rush to the train, which is usually at the far end of the platform. All this for the extortionate fares being charged....almost £20 for a single journey of 38 miles. Not good enough.

Dreadful trains

Chiltern railways seem to hold their customers in utter contempt. They are currently providing the only service Oxford-London (due to a broken bridge on the GWR line) and yet despite this and knowing they’ll have an influx of passengers they consistently run short, old and dirty trains. The journey is 1hr 20 and there are no plugs or tables available, not even folding ones on the back of the seats. The trains are regularly crammed, everyone is uncomfortable. The seats are tiny and the legroom negligible (and I’m quite short!). These trains would be fine for short journeys but it’s insane that they are used for journeys of over an hour.

Given that the company do own and run better/newer trains, I cannot understand why they want their passengers to be miserable.

Chiltern rail is just the most awful way to travel. Please do better, it’s not acceptable.

Shameful

Shameful
They cram people like cattle into the coaches, have you stand for 2 hours all the way from Marylebone to Birmingham. No chance to even sit on the floor as people are standing back to back you can't even get on your knees. Insane heat and polluted air, everyone sweating and some getting sick. And it's like this literally every single time I have to take this 'service'. They don't give a .. about you, four carriages always no matter how busy the train is but they take your money £36 for one way. In every normal country with functional institutions these people would have been sacked long time ago.

Big up Phill in Princes Risborough

Wanted to say a huge thank you to Phill the station manager at Princes Risborough Station who helped me get my bag back that I left on the train. Also thank you to the train driver who I’m afraid I didn’t get their name. The bag was back with me in an hour incredible service and Phill acted fast and was a life saver.
