I used Fidler & Pepper for my most recent re-mortgage. This solicitors was recommended through my mortgage advisor, so I took their recommendation on board and I am glad I did.
I found them to be very thorough from start to finish. I especially found Lauren Evans extremely helpful as this was the first re-mortgage I had undertaken so I had a lot of questions. Lauren come back very quickly to my questions and provided me with the information I needed. I would highly recommend this solicitors.

I’m being generous with 2 stars. Thats only because you need legal to complete your mortgage! But I did toil between 1&2

We recently had our remortgage dealt with by this firm, although it’s worth pointing out that we didn’t choose or appoint them ourselves — they were appointed by our financial adviser as part of the remortgage process.

The legal side was completed, but unfortunately the overall experience has left me disappointed, particularly with the repeated requests for a review.

After the first request, I replied:

“Yeah sure, I’ll sort that sometime this week for you.”

Seven days later, I was contacted again, so I replied:

“Hi, sorry for the delay. I’m currently tied up with my daughter being induced for her baby, been in hospital since last week, so that’s taking my time at the moment, but I will do it once I get a minute.”

My daughter was understandably my priority, and I had explained that I was dealing with a family situation and needed some time.

What really irritated me was that the response wasn’t one of understanding or even a simple “Hope everything goes well with your daughter.” Instead, I continued to receive requests for the review, including:

“If it isn’t any trouble, please mention our names, Emma Scollick and Georgie Guest, as this is something our bosses look out for.”

That really didn’t sit well with me. It made the whole thing feel very much like the review was about them and their internal targets, rather than my experience as a customer.

But what made me even more frustrated was when I eventually went onto the reviews to leave mine and noticed several other reviews containing virtually the same request to mention their names because their bosses look out for it.

At that point, I honestly thought: WTH?!

What I had initially taken as an individual request from someone who wanted some recognition for good service suddenly appeared to be something that was being repeatedly encouraged across customers.

It actually made the whole experience feel even less personal than I had originally thought.

To be completely honest, we had very little direct interaction with the solicitors themselves. Our financial adviser did all of the work involved in arranging the remortgage, while the solicitors dealt with the legal side of the transaction — for which they were paid a substantial fee.

The legal work was completed, but I wouldn’t describe the service as particularly personal or above and beyond what I would expect from a paid legal service.

I’m also speaking to my financial adviser about this experience and recommending that he considers using a more professional firm for future clients.

And ironically, constantly chasing customers for reviews and specifically asking them to name individual employees because their bosses monitor the reviews doesn’t encourage me to write a more positive review. Quite the opposite.

A review should be an honest reflection of the customer’s experience — not a tool for employees to collect named praise for their bosses to see.

Having now read the other reviews, I’m actually more disappointed than I was when I first started writing this.

A little genuine human interaction and consideration would have gone a long way

I have been extremely impressed with the service from my conveyancer throughout my house sale.

Despite what has become a frustrating and prolonged transaction, my solicitor has consistently responded quickly, dealt with enquiries promptly and chased the buyer’s solicitors whenever progress has stalled. On several occasions, matters requiring a response have been dealt with the same day.

Communication has been clear and efficient, and it has been reassuring to know that my side of the transaction is being actively progressed rather than left sitting. The app is very good at sharing information.

Having now experienced almost four months of conveyancing, the contrast between the efficiency on each side of the transaction has been particularly noticeable.

I would happily use them again and would recommend them for conveyancing.

This has to be one of the most straightforward and fastest transactions I have experienced. The communication was excellent throughout. A huge thank you to Penny Gribbins and Annie Castledine. Keep up the great work!

Fidler & Pepper – One of the worst experiences I’ve had with a professional service

If I could give 0 stars, I would.

My remortgage with Fidler & Pepper has been an absolute masterclass in hidden charges and poor transparency.

I was initially quoted a £380 fixed fee plus additional charges. That sounds reassuring until you discover that “fixed fee” apparently means very little. As the process progressed, my bill quietly climbed to over £1,100 — and the remortgage still isn’t even complete.

The biggest issue isn’t just the cost. It’s the complete lack of transparency.

I provided them with all the information upfront and asked a very simple question: “Based on my case, what do you estimate the total cost will be?” Instead of answering, they sent me a price list containing 60–70 different additional charges for virtually every minor activity imaginable. That isn’t an estimate — it’s a way of avoiding giving customers a realistic idea of what they’ll actually pay.

Then came the charges that are genuinely unbelievable.

They billed me £30 + VAT just to review an updated mortgage offer. We live in 2026. Anyone with Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, or any basic AI tool can compare two mortgage offers in seconds and produce a summary of every change. This is a task that technology can assist with almost instantly, yet I’m being charged solicitor rates for what feels like a routine administrative exercise. It raises serious questions about whether they’re embracing modern tools to improve efficiency or simply charging clients for every possible touchpoint.

And the most ridiculous part?

I received a £45 refund from my mortgage lender because I’d overpaid. Fidler & Pepper charged me £45 to process that refund. The entire refund disappeared in legal fees. You honestly couldn’t make it up.

By the end of this process, it feels like every email, every document, every tiny amendment is treated as another opportunity to add to the invoice. Instead of feeling like a client, I felt like a revenue stream.

In my opinion, this is extremely poor value for money, poor communication, and poor transparency. A remortgage should be a straightforward legal process, not a never-ending list of surprise charges.

My advice: avoid Fidler & Pepper if you value transparent pricing and honest communication. Get everything in writing, ask for a realistic total estimate, and think twice before instructing them.

This has been one of the most frustrating and disappointing customer experiences I’ve had.
