What is going on……………

Quoted an amount for the Legal Services I asked for. I accepted and had to pay some funds then the legal company they provided have sent forms unrelated to what I require.

Great service

Charlotte made the whole experience very simple, was always to hand for questions and queries much later than normal office hours. Process was simple, felt much more affordable and got matched with a solicitor that has made life very easy so far with our sale and onwards purchase.

An attractive but MISLEADING initial quote that does not reflect the final cost. I would not recommend this service.

I had a disappointing experience with Home Legal Direct. The final amount I paid was around 30% higher than the initial quote provided to me. These additional charges were not included in the original quote and were not even mentioned by the solicitor (NPS Law) during the process. When I raised the issue, Home Legal Direct did not take any responsibility and simply stated that I should pay the price given in the initial quote.

What was particularly concerning is that these extra charges were only mentioned in the afternoon of the day before completion. At that point, I was told about the additional fees and given the option (must be kidding) to avoid them by delaying completion until the following week. This is not a realistic option for most buyers, as it can disrupt the entire chain and delay the process for everyone involved. As a result, I had no option but to pay these charges

The initial quote may look attractive, but in my experience the final cost was significantly higher. Be prepared for additional fees that were not part of the original quotation.

It is also important to note that Home Legal Direct does not provide the legal service directly; they simply find a solicitor for you. In my opinion, it is better to search for and instruct a solicitor directly rather than relying on a middleman.

Based on my experience, I would not recommend Home Legal Direct.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are genuinely sorry to hear that you feel disappointed with your experience, as we always take concerns like this seriously. However, there are a few important points that we feel are missing from the context provided.

When you raised your concerns about the fees, we immediately escalated this to the conveyancing firm. They confirmed that you had already had a agreed with them earlier that day that you had accepted the fees. At that stage, our ability to intervene was limited, as the agreement was already in place between yourself and the firm.

The fee in question related specifically to an expedited exchange and completion within five working days. You were advised that if you did not wish to incur this fee, you could simply delay completion to allow the firm sufficient time to prepare. In addition, one of the other fees was waived as a gesture of goodwill, and you had confirmed your agreement to proceed on that basis.

Our quotes are generated based on the information provided at the point of instruction. We cannot predict future decisions made between clients and their conveyancers, such as opting for expedited exchange and completion, which are outlined in the firm’s onboarding documentation and are standard across the industry.

Had the fees not already been agreed before you raised the concern with us, we may have been able to support you further. As the agreement had already been made, the situation was unfortunately outside of our control.

We are sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations, but we hope this clarifies the full context of what happened.

Property purchase took over 6 months, with no chain and no explanation for the delays

The solicitor that Home Legal Direct connected me to, PCS Legal, took over 6 months from offer to completion for a 4 year old flat with no chain. I have not been given any reason as to what has caused the delays.

Don't bother and work with a solicitor directly, you might save on additional fees that way. The quote that i'd pay directly to the conveyancer was also about half of what i actually paid. A lot got added later on.

We are sorry to hear that your transaction took longer than expected. Unfortunately, as your transaction was complex being both leasehold and shared ownership, these transactions can take significantly longer than standard conveyancing. This is primarily due to third party involvement, especially with shared ownership where a lease agreement needs to be drafted and approved by all parties.

With both of these transactions, we are unable to quote for elements outside of the conveyancer's control such as management packs, notification fees, apportionments, deed of covenant, or creation of a lease where the shared ownership company may not have it's own. These fees are set out by the management companies and other requirements are outlined within the existing lease agreement, which is not something which is available until the vendor provides it.

If you feel there are additional fees on the statement which do not align with these, please reach out to our support team with a copy of your completion statement, who will be happy to run through this with you.

Conveyancer appointed by Home Legal Direct has gone bust!

The conveyancer appointed by HLD has disappeared and is now being investigated by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority. The firm stopped trading after 5-months of working on the sale and only days before my buyer wanted to move in. I have had to appoint a new conveyancer and restart the process again. Home Legal Direct has refused to return my payment to them as 'a refund is no longer available to you as your cooling off period has expired'.
This indicates poor due diligence by HLD when appointing legal firms and also poor customer service in resolving serious client issues.
To summarise HLD invoiced me for £296.00 to appoint a legal firm and now take no responsibility or liability for doing this or the potential loss of my buyer due to delays caused by the legal firm stopping trading just days before the sale was due to go through?

We are sorry to hear that you were impacted by the unforeseen closure of PM Law. It is shocking that such a large firm could close so suddenly with no forewarning. However, the suggestion that we did not do our due diligence on the firm is simply untrue. We had been working with them successfully for nearly 10 years, and not even the SRA who regulate them or their own staff were aware of what was going to happen.

You are correct in that we are not offering refunds related to this as we are not at fault. We actively reached out to our clients with live cases assigned to PM Law to let them know what had happened and to place them with another firm within our network.

While we are sympathetic to the impact this has had on many clients, we are unable to refund everyone that has been affected.

Unfortunately

Unfortunately, I have had a very disappointing experience, particularly in my dealings with Michael (Coventry office) and another member of staff. I feel that my circumstances were not properly understood or considered.

Due to unexpected family financial difficulties, I had no choice but to withdraw from the property purchase. This was not a decision I took lightly. However, despite explaining my situation, I have been informed that the £756 I paid will not be refunded.

I am extremely upset and disappointed. Losing £756 under these circumstances has caused me further financial stress, especially as the transaction did not proceed. I believe there should be consideration and fairness where a client’s genuine financial hardship is involved.

I respectfully request that you review my case again and reconsider your decision regarding the refund. I would appreciate a written response addressing this complaint
as soon as possible.

You contacted us asking for a refund because you were not happy with the inconsistent information being provided by the estate agent regarding the property, therefore, you made the decision to withdraw from the purchase.

You also stated that you might look to proceed again in the future, but wanted a refund at the time. We confirmed that we could keep funds on account for up to 24 months from the date of instruction, but as your file was well outside of the cooling off period, no refund was due.

You then argued that this was unfair as you had received a refund from us in the past so you thought a refund should be due now. We did offer you a refund in 2025 as your request came within our 14 day cooling off period.

While we appreciate your frustration with this, Home Legal Direct is not at fault so we have no reason to deviate from our terms and conditions which clearly state that outside of the cooling off period, no refund is due.

Better to find your own solicitors

Initially the service was good, explained the process, provided me quotes and found me a solicitor, one that I have used previously so was okay with that part.

Home legal direct guaranteed me the quote and that I wouldn't pay anymore then the quote (with the exception of a couple minor add ones) but I ended up paying about £400 more than what they guaranteed me.

I think it will be cheaper just researching and finding your own solicitor rather than using a this or any other broker. Quick enough to get a quote independently, and you'll be dealing directly with your own chosen solicitors.

We are sorry to hear that you were not happy with the final statement provided. We are clear in our policy terms and conditions that if additional elements come up during the transaction which require additional work that falls outside of the scope of the original quote, that the firm can charge for these.

During your conversation with our team, you did ask if that was "everything", which the agent confirmed as everything you had disclosed to us was included on the quote. While we make our quotes as accurate as we can, unfortunately, much like yourself, we have no way of knowing what will be revealed when the contract pack is received and the conveyancer is able to assess the title and address any deficits that could put you at financial risk.
