Disappointing and unprofessional experience – not worth the premium price

We booked a private island tour with Mauritours in Mauritius in November. Before booking, we specifically questioned why their price was significantly higher than the same type of tour offered through GetYourGuide. The explanation we received was that Mauritours was more professional, more personal, and offered a more tailor-made experience. Unfortunately, our actual experience was the exact opposite.

On the day of the tour, we waited 20 minutes with no driver showing up. We had to call the office ourselves to ask what was going on. Only then were we told that the driver was delayed and would arrive within 30 minutes. Importantly, they clearly knew he was late but never bothered to inform us.

After another 30 minutes, still no driver. We called again. This time we were told the driver would be delayed another 30–45 minutes. Once again, no proactive communication from Mauritours. At this point, the delay seriously impacted our plans. Our itinerary included shopping and site visits that close before 5 PM, which is exactly why we had planned the tour from 9 AM to 5 PM.

The driver finally arrived almost two hours late. When he did, it became clear that he had no idea what our itinerary was. We had to explain everything again and adjust the plan on the spot because otherwise it would have been impossible to complete the tour before closing times.

We complained to the agent and requested a price reduction. After “checking with management,” we were told that a partial reimbursement was approved and would be paid within 1–2 weeks (already questionable given the circumstances).

Fast forward to today: it is now January, more than two months later, and we still have not received the reimbursement. We have contacted the agent weekly since November, and the response is always the same: “I’m not sure why accounting hasn’t reimbursed you yet, let me check.” This has been going on for weeks with no resolution.

As a comparison, we later booked a tour through GetYourGuide. Everything was flawless: punctual, well-organized, knowledgeable guide, and overall a far better experience — at a much lower price than Mauritours.

To be clear, we do not blame the driver himself. He appeared to be thrown into a situation he had not been properly briefed on. The fault lies entirely with Mauritours’ organization, communication, and follow-up.

Based on our experience, Mauritours did not deliver the professionalism, personal service, or reliability they use to justify their higher prices. We cannot recommend them.
