⭐ Portmeirion Review – Disappointing and Overpriced

After a 3‑hour drive and paying £47 for a family ticket (2 adults and 1 child), we left after just 20 minutes because we genuinely couldn’t understand the attraction. Yes, there are some nice buildings, but beyond that it felt like a very tacky tourist trap rather than a premium day out.

The whole place seemed overpriced, especially the food, which didn’t match the cost or the setting. For what you get, the value simply isn’t there. We expected something unique or immersive, but instead found it underwhelming, commercialised, and not at all engaging for families.

Overall, it felt like a long drive and a lot of money for very little return. Not somewhere we’d rush back to.

Not disability friendly...went for a double birthday meal..4 of us had booked and arrived in good time..2 of our party have disabilities...we approached the young man at the entrance to ask where to wait for the buggy to take the 2 people with mobility issues down the hill to the restaurant.
" We have to give priority to the people booking into the hotel so you'll be waiting around 45 minutes."
We have visited many times and know that the buggy usually takes people down in good time.
We were told to wait by the hut at the entrance.
I asked if there were any seats for the 2 people to sit on and wait..
" No we don't have seats and there's nowhere to sit."
By now we were all becoming angry and upset at the treatment, lack of facilities and dismissive attitude.
The woman did eventually ring down to the restaurant and so we waited only 20 mins...the 2 able bodied walked down.
The buggy ride going down was great and the driver sensitive to my friends needs...
Coming back up it was a different story. My friend is recovering from a fractured vertebrae and just needs the driver to be sensitive of bumps in the road...this guy wasn't and sped up the hill with complete disregard.
My friend was crying with the pain and put out of action for 2 days...
I have sent an e mail to Portmeirion but have had a response hence I'm putting this on Trip Advisor.
I have to say that the lunch was delicious And staff were attentive.
However we will not be returning.
We are living in 2026 and it was obvious that there is a lack of disability awareness among staff and a lack of facilities such as a bench, on arrival.
Really disappointed...
This could easily be resolved so please step up.

This is my second visit to Portmeirion and I was very disappointed with today’s visit. The first time I went (a good few years ago) you were allowed in a lot of the houses and I really enjoyed the visit. This time I got fed up of reading ‘residents only’ signs. Apart from walking around the village and the completing the sea/woodland walks there really wasn’t much else to do. It wasn’t worth £20’s per adult. I also felt bad as I totally misled my friend about what she would be able to do at the village. I understand that they are now a charity and have to rent out the properties but maybe for day visitors there should be a reduction linked to the entrance fee.

The first problem is the parking, not much of it, second is the entrance fee at £20 per person the third problem is its a bit like being in a fake Orlando resort, except with nothing to do.

The good points are the nice view of the bay and some pretty colored buildings, but if you look close its a bit run down.

A good idea would be to credit half the entrance fee in the cafe or gift shops. We spend £0 inside the facility. We were not tempted by anything that looked inviting.

Italian village? More like Italian prison.
Still living in the last century for no good reason.

It’s 2026, catch up with the times.
Castles, estates and attractions have figured it out, why can’t you?
So what’s the plan? Leave them in the car?
Drive miles back to the campsite because of a daft rule?

Had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon in this beautiful and interesting place. There is so much to look at in the village and the views across the estuary are breathtaking. We ate and shopped and received attentive service throughout. Yes it is a tourist attraction - given the global appeal of the name Portmeirion, we didn't expect it not to be. The village is spotlessly clean, no dog mess or litter. The website clearly points out that dogs (except guide dogs) are not admitted and why that is.

We arrived after a four-hour drive looking forward to visiting the gardens, only to be met with a sign at the car park stating that no dogs are allowed. This was incredibly frustrating and, frankly, hard to understand. It’s an outdoor garden setting. Why prohibit dogs entirely, even when they are kept on leads and owners are responsible for cleaning up after them? There seems to be little logic behind such a blanket rule.

Of course, guide dogs are permitted, as they should be, but it does raise the question of how often that exception actually applies compared to the number of regular visitors turned away.

The entry fee is £20, which we were prepared to pay, but we never even made it inside. I offered for the rest of my family to go in while I stayed outside with our dogs, but that wasn’t acceptable to us, our dogs are part of our family, not an inconvenience to be left behind.

After such a long journey, this was a disappointing and avoidable experience. Policies like this feel outdated and unnecessarily restrictive. Do better!

Read the 5 star rating as possible advertising from the place itself. It read as they trying to convince you to visit it.

A very warm welcome when we walked into the restaurant at Castell Deudraeth. Our lunch was delicious, hot food, hot plates. Freshly cooked with quality ingredients. Great service from friendly staff. Great value especially if you want to enter the village after you’ve eaten as you get complimentary entry. The man on the entrance gate was very friendly and we got a warm welcome. We were very lucky because the sun came out after it had previously bucketed down! We didn’t really know what to expect from the village but it didn’t disappoint especially the gardens. They were a blaze of colour with tulips out everywhere in fact I’ve never seen such large tulips.

Very disapointed in their customer service Won't be purchasing from them again, fist order arrived damaged second order was wrong.

This is my favourite place to go to ,being my third visit , with lots of happy family memories attached, visited on a quieter day out of season , toilets and surrounds clean , nice food in 6 cafe, also the pottery part of the shop good variety , all in all a great place to visit . Be seeing you ......

Total waste of time and money. £10 entrance for absolutely nothing. Buildings were an eye sore, tired and unkept. Nothing to do.

I bought a pair of seconds tea plates, they are beautiful, only way to tell they are seconds are small marks on the rear, the flower designs are so life like I am amazed, really happy with my purchases, customer services are very helpful. Will definitely buy some more pieces. Thank you all.

SO expensive for a walk around a
colourful hotels. It was around £40 per ticket no dogs allowed and that made no sense considering all of what you do is walk outside, which is slightly disappointing as i hoped there would be access into most buildings to see the architecture or more of the history. There are a hand few of small shops one of which was hinted to be *Italian foods and drink* at closer inspection none of it including the red wine was actually Italian. If you have walking issues you will not find any walking aids, walker shops nor is the terrain suitable for those with any walking issues, the golf buggys are for hotel stayers only, the pool is for hotel stayers only. Its a great spot for pictures and a bite to eat but apart from that it is a tourist trap. I even asked if the overpriced tickets were annual, they are not.

Portmeirion is a beautiful little village that has had a special place in my heart since a visit with my parents when I was young. Loved it so much that we decided to get married there in August, it was a small intimate wedding and we opted for afternoon tea as well, can’t fault anything, the staff were super friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for Delyth who deals with wedding bookings etc. Now we have even more of an excuse to visit every year for our anniversary. I see many complaints about not being dog friendly, which is a shame as I am a fellow dog owner, however I can totally get why it is a no dog zone and it’s still well worth a visit without our four legged buddy.

I'm so disappointed that what was always a lovely culinary experience has gone so far downhill. A tiny tartlet described as a pie with accompanying mashed potato consisting of watery piped strips on the tartlet.
The only redeeming feature was the lovely cheese!

I had been really excited to experience Afternoon Tea at the Hotel Portmeirion in Portmeirion Village, as a treat at the end of our visit to the winter food festival. However, our treatment by one of their young waitresses left a definitely sour taste.

On arrival, our party of four left our coats and were shown to a table by a member of staff. We were soon approached by a surly young woman who demanded to know if we had booked. Her attitude was rude and passive-aggressive from the outset. Having been assured that we had indeed booked, and paid a deposit, she once again challenged this, and in a loud voice demanded to know under which name we had booked. She stated that had we been seated by a member of staff we would have been provided with menus, the implication being that we had just walked in off the street and had no business being there. This was degrading, and other diners were beginning to stare at us. I have eaten at some very prestigious venues, including the Savoy Grill and the Ritz, and never once have I been made to feel so unwelcome. My partner is diabetic, and when I began to tentatively ask if perhaps we could have a small box for him to take a couple of treats home, she sneered and abruptly told me I should have informed them of any dietary requirements at the point of booking. She flounced off before I could explain myself (presumably to check our booking) and I resolved to take her name on her return. However, she never did return, and we didn't see her again; maybe she had gone off shift or perhaps another staff member had noticed her appalling service?

Luckily, the day was saved by an absolutely wonderful waiter (who incidentally, when asked to recommend a tea, informed us he was from Northern India). He could not have been more attentive or helpful. On request, he readily produced small boxes for us to take away a few treats for my partner to enjoy later, sugar leels permitting.

On to the food: I must say this was absolutely delicious, especially the smoked salmon and caviar blinis and the cheesecakes. The afternoon tea was beautifully presented and there was more than enough of it. If I had to criticise, the egg sandwiches were a bit lacklustre, and mine contained a small piece of eggshell. I also thought it was a bit scone-heavy - one each would've been plenty and there was insufficient cream and jam provided. The cream was also a bit weird, not the usual clotted cream but with a strange consistency.

All in all, we had an enjoyable afternoon despite the bad start, but I'm not sure I'd repeat the experience. The hotel itself is rather shabby, and I certainly did not feel very special, given our reception.

I should note that I am autistic and felt quite intimidated by the rude waitress. Other neurodiverse customers might've been extremely distressed by her unnecessarily rude and aggressive manner. I'm hoping she can be identified and given some retraining.

Admission is very good value for money, because as well as the immortailised village itself, there are extensive forest trails with ponds, sculptures and walks leading to the sandy bay to explore. The guy at the admissions desk was very helpful as was the lady in the prisoner gift shop. Excellent Food in the Italian restaraunt on site & quick service there despite the numbers. Those who don't know The Prisoner might not find it so intriguing, but the floral displays were magnificent.
