Minimal nursing care

Recently had a hip replacement done at Fitzwilliam Hospital in Peterborough . I am a 72 year old senior retired nurse and was a NHS patient . The consultants were excellent but following the surgery the surgeon did not visit me again . In the hours following surgery I was in desperate need of the toilet but had to wait twenty one minutes for a response to the bell . No nurse responded but a physiotherapist came and assured me a nurse would come . They did not come and I was not able to reach the toilet ; I felt degraded and ashamed. Still no nurse came. Over the three days following I was not offered a wash . The room was not well cleaned: a cotton bud on the floor at my arrival was still there when I left . The physio did not follow the protocols set out in the printed information on the follow up to the operation and it was only on Day Two that the physio visited and this was only to get me out of bed. On Day Three the physio was rude and abrupt .
My overall experience of care was very poor indeed.

Torquay Ramsay mount stuart private…

Torquay Ramsay mount stuart private hosp allowed their staff -one secretary & PA to manager to be v v intimidating & rude to a 78 year old lady after she asked for a non muslim radiographer due to her jewish origins on advice from Ml5 yet did nt offer a chaperone ! She requested one but again hysterical nasty rude behaviour from staff who have no manners /kindness /courtesy & should be sacked as freedom of expression here in uk a hardwon thing after fighting Hitler & Stalin ! Yet instead of reeducating staff offenders they have banned her thus breaking uk law! If staff had been well mannered they should have offered a chaperone and appologised. My friend has been treated wrongly as the rude offender .In an incident that should never have happened with kind good mannered staff! Now the inconvenience of losing the nearest private & 2 thirds nhs is extra insulting when in pain & what used to be a good mannered kind hosp now v v nhs bad mannered esp in the car park- rude & inconsiderate to an good customer of 30yrs -staff good manners to all customers is v v important &discipline& training to achieve this so a chaperone to all ladies should be offered.

Medicine for profit

After the second fees increase this year I can no longer afford to see my psychologist.
Dr Owen samuels now charges me $455 for 15 min. My 2 options are access my medication through illegal channels, or go without. Absolutely scum of the earth, I have to spend $1800 a year before I can even access my medication

Premium price, NHS service

I used Springfield Hospital, Chelmsford, Essex, for follow-up care after an NHS operation. Appointments were quicker, but I was referred between multiple consultants, tests were expensive, and I had to make subject access requests to get my own imaging and reports. Essentially, you pay a premium for the same care as the NHS. Use your right to choose on the NHS, there are better hospitals available rather than wasting money with Ramsay Health Care UK.

I wish I'd taken a look at the reviews before I tried to book an appointment. It may have made me look a little deeper before I Wasted hours of time trying to book an appointment, only to be told at the last minute that Ramsey don't treat under 18's (aside from 2 sites). Had they made it clear at the start or even, here's an idea, put it on their website, we wouldn't have wasted hours and taken a day off work. I suppose if this is how they approach things, then I guess it's a lucky escape. I don't know who the charlatan at the top is but I can only assume that they're a career grifter if they don't think it’s worth pointing out that they refuse to treat children in 95% of their sites.

Had to cancel a hospital appointment on the day due to 90 year-old patient feeling unwell. Rang the hospital, no response, so sent a text to the number given. No response. Rang again, hung on and was then cut off by them. Texted again asking for an acknowledgement of my texts, no response.
Hopeless. Don't know how to proceed now. Very poor patient care.

Couldn’t have asked for a better physiotherapist

I was a NHS patient at the Berkshire independent hospital in Reading that is a Ramsay healthcare provider. I’ve had operations on both my shoulders within a year of each other. The staff there were lovely and very attentive. Thank goodness both ops were successful and of course followed up with physio. It’s my physiotherapist that’s prompted me to leave a review. Hannah, has been amazing
so approachable and took the time to show me each action needed and explained which area of my shoulders the exercise was targeted.

I truly believe this is why I’ve made fantastic progress ahead of schedule. So thank you Hannah I hope you get the recognition you deserve so again thank you

My experience was with Tyler ( NEC) on the telephone as my first port of call re my painful knee. Tyler took copious notes, read them back to me, researched the appropriate knee specialists and all whilst being considerate, professional, polite, caring, assiduous and efficient. This gave a marvellous first impression of Ramsay Health and I thank him.

Shockingly hopeless

Shockingly hopeless. Stress inducing, incompetent and wouldn't know a plastic surgeon from their own anal sphincter. Called the central booking line to book a consultation for a particular procedure at the Fitzwilliam hospital. However got there only to be told that he doesn't do that type of procedure but would refer me to hospitals in ma area that do. After two weeks nothing was sent, no price list, no appointment times. Nothing. Called their line again who said that there is another doctor at the Fitzwilliam that does do the particular surgery I'm after. When I eventually spoke to Fitzwilliam directly they said that surgeon doesn't even work in that field. Decided to cut my losses with them and arrange an appointment at ashtead hospital where they do do the procedure only to never get an appointment confirmation email and had to keep chasing them for it. They still didn't send it and after 150 mile drive down to ashtead, I checked in for my appointment 45 minutes early only to wait an additional hour to be told that the doctor who was going to see me has gone home. It wasn't until 1pm I was told that he would come back at 6 pm and see me. Absolutely shocking service. I'm a fee paying private patient

Clinical error

78 year old patient had spinal haematoma after surgery and was left for 20 hours before it was washed out ...the result is life changing spinal injury and loss nearly all mobility. A total clinical disgrace. Newhall hospital should be ashamed and doing all everything possible to correct this but they washed their hands.

Recommend - categorically not

Would I recommend the Fitzwilliam Peterborough – absolutely not.
The aftercare following my operation was dire. I had surgery on 3 November and despite my admission notes saying I needed TED stockings, none were provided. So, to clarify this, the nurse that walked me to theatre didn’t question why I wasn’t wearing them, nor did the nurse in theatre. Following the operation, I was taken back to my room and no comment was made about wearing stockings to prevent a DVT. I spent two nights in the hospital and at no point did a nurse mention the TED stockings. Even at the point of discharge they weren’t offered until my wife insisted they issued them.
On my second night, I called the nurse and told her my catheter was blocked and I was in agony She insisted it wasn’t even though I was almost in tears. I told her to fetch another nurse who came in, took one look and fetched the doctor who unblocked it
Two weeks after my operation if felt like I had gone into retention so I called the hospital and went in. I was shoved in a side room and had to wait for a nurse who didn’t carry out any Obs, just checked me with the bladder scanner, told me it looked okay and said I didn’t need any antibiotics and sent me away. 48 hours later I had a raging UTI that my GP had to sort out.
I spoke to the hospital about this and said I deserved some recompense which they said they would consider. Despite writing twice more, they have completely ignored my request and now don’t even respond to emails.
In summary, the Fitzwilliam is driven by profit, not patient satisfaction. I certainly would never use them again, nor would I ever recommend them
This review is about the care I received, not the surgeon, who did a brilliant job

6 months wait - no communication from The Oaks Hospital

Referred to the Oaks Hospital in Colchester to see an Orthopaedic consultant. That was on July 16th 2025 - it's now 6 months later and I haven't heard anything from the Hospital or the Ramsay Group. At least 3 emails have gone unanswered. As many other reviewers have mentioned: Customer Service is non-existent.

No referral,no appointment.

Emailed an enquiry, explaining my condition and the impossibility of getting an NHS GP appointment at my surgery. They referred me to a consultant, appointment made, fantastic! Appointment then had to be cancelled 2 days before because I didn't have an NHS GP referral! So much for private health care 🤦‍♀️

Administrative Incompetence, Zero Mea Culpa

Thirty minutes ago I arrived for my third consultation at Rowley Hall Hospital, Stafford, the date and time of which was agreed IN PERSON following my previous visit.

Unfortunately, I never got further than the reception because I was told my appointment was not for today, despite having made it IN PERSON moments after my previous appointment, adding it to my diary contemporaneously.

Given the date of this particular appointment was to be exactly one week after a consultation with my local NHS hospital for 3 DVTs in my leg - following a suggestion by my Ramsay Health Care consultant, Mr Elnasri - there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the date and time of this appointment was absolutely correct.

Unfortunately, the receptionist (lacking any empathy, as they tend to) informed me that her records show that it was in 3 months time, in February. It was not. It is not. It should not have been. And, despite her protestations to the contrary, I have not received any postal correspondence to say the date or time was altered.

Over an hour of travelling time to get here - likely the same on the return leg - and an entire day off work squandered because of the unapologetic incompetence of this institution to simply schedule an appointment.

The episode naturally makes one question the more important aspects of the service that will be provisioned if they can't get the basics correct. Given the reviews of this institution are currently showing as 2.4 stars on TrustPilot, one really does have to ask whether one should undergo vital surgery at this place. I think it may be time to do some more thorough research…

In a word criminal.

I had a hernia repair in January 2023.

The surgeon abandoned pre-op exams 10 years earlier preferring to leave diligence to chance hoping he would be long gone by the time to problem catch up.

This is a breach of the manufacturers instructions for the repair mesh which is a class three medical device. Governed by the medical device regulations, class three devices do require compliance with the manufacturers instructions. Breaches of these regulations maybe prosicuted as a criminal offense.

By reducing the pre-op to just 3 minutes a lot of important details were missed. In my case I didn't have a conventional inguinal hernia, but a traumatic hernia caused by a direct handlebar impact 27 years prior. The significance of this is that it's 6cm out of position.

Unfortunately New Hall and the wider Ramsay Healthcare are the kind of bog basic one trick pony kind of hernia surgeons who you should never be let loose on patients. For those considering hernia surgery, a skilled surgeon will have many repair techniques and meshes in their toolbox. They will understand that each mesh and technique is only viable in its niche. The surgeons who practice a one size fits all approach really shouldn't be trusted.

In the case of Ramsay health care they specialized in the use of 3d max mesh. They still refuse to disclose that possessed them to use the Medtronic dextile mesh on me.

During the surgery, it was obvious with hindsight that my hernia was out of position and in a case of pressonititis, the surgeon elected to continue with a procedure that he should have abandoned to obtain enhanced consent for.

His solution was to take a right hand anatomically shaped mesh and place it centrally to provide equal left and right coverage. 90% of the mesh was used to reinforce good tissue. Only 10% of the mesh performed any useful function.

Predictably the repair and demonstrably failed within a few weeks and I was then refered back to the original surgery team.

Unfortunately rather than take the initiative and quietly fix their defective surgery, they chose to fabricate the scan results required to justify a diagnostic laparoscopy. The used this to introduce entirely false diagnostic opinions that they beloved no one would challenge. The NHS is always reluctant perform repeat examinations. But if you fight hard enough and for long enough, in my case 20 months, examinations can be repeated.

The second referral was taken over by Ramsay's then group medical director who claimed nothing was wrong with the original surgery. He then fabricated a spermatic cord lipoma finding which he claimed to have removed, but kept no images or obtained a biopsy. Bizarrely he then claimed I could immediately return to my normal activities. He didn't even recommend 24 hours for the general anesthetic to wear off.

He then wrote to my GP and myself trying to obstruct further examinations and second opinions.

The results of the exam 20 months later still haven't properly been disclosed. They gave answers for different questions to the ones I asked, eventually resorting to the most convincing defence of them all. No comment was their answer to a 20+ page formal complaint.

The images provided for the laparoscopy have been so heavily darkened it looks like they forgot to remove their lens caps. They claimed this is the best quality they can print. They refuse to send them by email.

They're now under investigation by the ombudsman, I now have the MRI scan results demonstrating what they were covering up and I'm on the waiting list for a replacement diagnostic laparoscopy to provide the replacement images.

I'm not sure how many other hospitals could subject patients to two unneccessary surgeries to obtain the information that should have been documented from the first.
